Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Candied Moon

A dull, agonizing pain exploded in my lower abdomen.

A broken whimper escaped my lips, and a wave of warm fluid trickled down between my legs.

The world instantly went black.

When I opened my eyes, a doctor was standing beside the bed, holding a medical chart.

"Have you been taking birth control pills long-term?" he asked, his forehead creased with concern. "There are severe internal lacerations down there as well.

“Child, how could you be so careless with your own body?"

I squeezed my eyes shut, holding back the burning tears. "I'm sorry."

The doctor let out a heavy sigh, his tone softening with pity.

"What's the point of apologizing to me? Your uterus was already fragile. After taking that hard blow to the stomach, we couldn't save the baby."

My eyes snapped open.

My heart felt as if it had been carved out of my chest, leaving a hollow, bleeding hole.

With trembling fingers, I dialed Lawrence's number.

A flirty female voice picked up instead.

"Are you looking for Lawrence Peterson? He just finished tiring himself out and fell asleep."

The woman's suggestive words turned my blood to ice.

The second the call disconnected, a cold laugh escaped my throat.

My eyes ached from the bitter absurdity of it all.

What was I expecting?

Was I expecting Lawrence to comfort me?

Or was I hoping he would panic and try to soothe me, the way he always did whenever Vivian was hurt?

I tapped open a different contact and typed out a message to the unknown number.

I lost.

The phone rang almost instantly.

A man's amused, low voice vibrated through the speaker, making my ear throb.

"Send me your location," he purred. "I'm coming to collect my debt."

After hanging up, I finally closed my eyes to rest for a short while.

It wasn't long before my phone buzzed again. It was Lawrence calling back.

"Did you call me earlier?" he asked curtly.

"Yes," I replied, my voice flat. "Just reminding you not to forget our 2:00 PM appointment at the registry office for the divorce."

Silence stretched over the line for a long time.

Finally, Lawrence squeezed out an icy word through gritted teeth, "Fine."

---

I checked myself out of the hospital and took a cab straight to the registry office.

Lawrence showed up with Serena, the young girl from the club in tow, clearly intent on rubbing it in my face.

The moment I looked at her, my eyes caught the diamond pendant resting on her collarbone.

It was Vivian's absolute favorite necklace.

Lawrence had never allowed me to even touch it, yet here he was, giving it away to a girl he had just met.

The clerk looked between us. "Reason for the divorce?"

"Irreconcilable differences," I said calmly. "We are divorcing by mutual consent."

The clerk glanced at Serena who was clinging tightly to Lawrence's arm, throwing me a look of deep sympathy.

Just as the clerk lifted the stamp to finalize the papers, Lawrence suddenly blurted out viciously, "Clara Hall, are you really going through with this? Don't you dare regret it!"

I ignored him entirely and motioned for the clerk to stamp the document.

Lawrence panicked.

He leaped out of his chair to stop the ink from hitting the paper, but his foot caught on the chair leg and he stumbled to the floor.

Behind us, a person in line suddenly spoke up in confusion.

"Do you guys feel like the floor is shaking?"

"Yeah, I feel it too," another muttered. "I thought my blood sugar was dropping."

Suddenly, every phone in the hall burst into a deafening emergency alarm.

The sudden, violent trembling knocked people off their feet.

Glass windows shattered into dust, and the load-bearing walls emitted a horrifying, agonizing groan.

Chaos broke out. Everyone rushed frantically toward the single emergency exit.

Lawrence pulled the girl close, sheltering her completely beneath his arms.

I was slammed to the ground by the surging crowd.

My frail, battered body took repeated blows from the stampede, and I spat out a mouth full of dark blood onto the floorboards.

Watching the two of them hurry toward the exit, a sudden sense of peace washed over me.

Dying right here didn't seem so bad after all.

I slowly closed my eyes.

---

The moment Lawrence made it out into the courtyard, he unclasped the necklace from the girl's neck and tucked it safely into his inner jacket pocket.

"Find somewhere safe to hide," he ordered, turning back toward the entrance.

The girl grabbed his sleeve in horror. "Are you crazy?!"

Lawrence violently shoved her hand away.

But just as he took a step back toward the entrance, the entire registry building collapsed into a cloud of dust.

When he finally woke up, Lawrence found himself trapped in a pitch-black room. The wound on his neck had been carefully bandaged. He was kept in total darkness for what felt like days, his stomach twisted with excruciating hunger. When food was finally brought in, he devoured it frantically. But within minutes, severe allergic hives flared up across his skin, and his throat began to swell shut.Realization dawned on him. This was Arthur's punishment, forcing him to endure every single agonizing torment I had suffered at his hands.Over the following weeks, Lawrence was fed trigger foods daily. Whenever the reaction turned life-threatening, medical staff stepped in to treat him just enough to keep him alive. They stripped him bare, allowing heavy, intimidating men to mock and touch him freely in the dark.By the time the guards finally dragged him out, Lawrence had been broken down into a hollow, skeletal husk of a man."Get up," a guard snapped, throwing a clean coat over

"If that's what your cheap love looks like," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper, "then I'd rather have nothing at all!"Not a single spark of affection remained in my eyes. I looked down at him as if he were a complete stranger.Lawrence opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He couldn't force a single word to defend himself.Yet his ego refused to surrender. He looked up, his raw voice choked with desperation."You loved me for so many years... how could you possibly change your mind so fast?"A bitter laugh escaped my throat."I never actually loved you, Lawrence."Lawrence snapped his head up, his bloodshot eyes wide with sheer terror."Vivian and I shared a rare, sensory connection," I said flatly. "My feelings for you were never mine. “Her intense love for you bled into my mind, tricking me into believing I was the one falling for you."I took a slow breath, stepping closer to Arthur."The only thing I ever wanted was someone who loved me wholeheartedly and uncon

Lawrence sprinted straight to the hospital ward, only to find the bed empty. The nurse told him I had already been discharged.Desperate, he tried calling his close friend who managed airport logistics, standardly known among their group as Liam Reed. The call went straight to voicemail.Lawrence had no choice but to head to the private club where their circle usually gathered. The moment he stepped into the venue, a valet mentioned that Liam Reed and a few others had just walked toward the back lounge. As Lawrence approached the doorway, the sound of laughing voices leaked through the heavy mahogany door."Lawrence is out looking for you, Liam," someone sneered."Looking for me for what?" Liam snickered. "He's not actually pissed because I kicked that girl in the ribs, is he? She was the one who—"Before the sentence was finished, Lawrence smashed the door open and hit the room like a sledgehammer.Chaos broke loose. After beating Liam Reed until his face was bloody and swo

"Please, Lawrence. Just let me go."That day, Lawrence left the hospital ward like a ghost, completely hollowed out.As soon as my injuries healed, Arthur bought two tickets to Switzerland, desperate to carry me far away from this place.---Lawrence stumbled back to his empty house in a haze.He flipped on the light and caught sight of a slender figure curled up on the sofa. "Clara!" he called out, his voice choked with instant excitement. The moment he got a clear look at her face, his expression hardened into stone.Serena Lucas stirred awake under the bright lights. Seeing him back, she scrambled up and threw her arms around him, her face lit up with delight."You're home?"Lawrence pushed her off without a trace of warmth."I told you to leave," he said, his voice dropping into a dangerous quiet. "Why the hell did you come back?"Sensory shock rippled through her. Serena instantly squeezed out tears, gazing up at him through a wet blur."You saved my life," she whi

When I calmly told him I no longer loved him, Lawrence froze. It took him a long moment to force out a response."Are you angry?" he rasped. "Because I didn't get you out first?"I stayed silent. Taking my silence as validation, he scrambled to explain."I only carried that girl out first to protect Vivian's necklace," he stammered, stepping forward. "The second I handed her off, I ran straight back to find you! I—""So my life isn't even worth a necklace?"Even though my heart was completely dead to him, a cold shudder ran down my spine as those words hung in the air.Lawrence went entirely rigid. He parted his lips, but no sound came out.I let out a long, exhausted sigh. "Lawrence, let's just end this miserable marriage. Stop torturing both of us."I never expected that the moment the words left my mouth, tears would spill from Lawrence's eyes.---The last time Lawrence had ever cried was at Vivian's funeral.Back then, he had wept profusely, losing every ounce of his

Darkness pressed in from all sides. I had no idea how long I had been trapped beneath the rubble. The frantic shouts of rescue teams leaked through the shattered concrete, faint and muffled. I parted my lips to call out, but my parched throat couldn't force out a single sound. It seemed I really was going to die here."Clara! Clara Hall!"A raw, agonizing scream pierced through the cracks in the stone slabs, accompanied by the frantic barking of a search dog. Piece by piece, the heavy debris above me was hauled away until a beam of sunlight broke through.I squeezed my eyes open and caught sight of a tear-streaked face.I had to be hallucinating. Arthur Daniels was supposed to be overseas. How could he possibly be here?An icy tear fell onto my lips, tasting deeply bitter."Over here! There's someone alive down here!""Clara Hall! Don't you dare close your eyes! Do you hear me?!" Arthur barked, his voice choked and hoarse. "You still owe me!"Heavy footsteps converged a
