Chapter 1

"You're copying Claire's husband again, aren't you?" Whitney Shaw asked, letting out a soft laugh.

She set the steaming bowl of soup on the kitchen island and untied her apron.

"Are you throwing another tantrum? Which husband in our circle doesn't fool around? I'll buy you a watch, and you'll get over it.

"Sean, enough already. If you're going to throw a fit, at least know when to stop.

"I know you're angry because I didn't go to the hospital to be with you a few months ago, but Claire did the exact same thing."

She looked at me as though she had every right to be offended.

"Everyone in our circle knows how much I dote on my husband. It was just a little harmless fun. Do you really have to embarrass me in front of everyone?"

Three months ago, I got into a serious car accident while rushing to deliver some urgent documents to her. Shards of glass pierced my spleen, and I was bleeding heavily beneath the wreckage.

I called her 99 times, but she rejected every single call.

On the last one, her young lover, Brian Landry, answered. In the background, I could hear her friends cheering and laughing.

"Sean, Whitney's cutting my 100-day anniversary cake right now," Brian drawled. "Claire and the others are all watching. Can't you stop ruining the mood for once?"

That day, I was lying outside the operating room, my entire body convulsing with pain. I was losing a dangerous amount of blood, and the hospital urgently needed a family member to sign the consent form.

All I got was one message from Whitney.

"Claire said men are always pulling the same tricks to get their wives' attention. Keep this up, and I'll block you."

She actually meant what she said and blocked me for three months.

It wasn't until yesterday, when Claire's husband filed for divorce with evidence of her affair and took half of Claire's shares in the settlement, that Whitney finally began to panic.

That very night, she threw Brian out of the apartment and rushed home to cook for me.

"I've been cooking this for four hours," she said.

Sensing my silence, Whitney pushed the bowl toward me.

"I know you're still recovering from your surgery and can't handle the cold, so I added some herbs," she added, a hint of pride in her voice.

"Look." She held up her index finger, making sure I could see the blister. "I even burned my hand making this soup for you.

"Claire has probably never even set foot in a kitchen. I went this far for you, so what more could you possibly want?"

I lowered my gaze to the bowl. The soup was golden yellow, the very dish she used to make so well when she was pursuing me.

Back then, she would stay up late making it just to help me regain my strength. But now, even when she treated me well, she had to compare herself to someone else.

"I don't want it," I said evenly, pushing the bowl away. "Whitney, I'm not joking. I've already signed the divorce agreement."

I tapped the document on the table.

Three months ago, she had a lawyer draw it up and send it to me just to please Brian.

The agreement stated that our marriage fell apart because I was jealous and emotionally unstable, and that she was filing for divorce against me.

At the time, she only wanted to flaunt it in front of her friends to show them how carefree she was.

Whitney's expression finally darkened.

"Sean, I've already given you a way out," she snapped. "If you're going to throw a fit, at least know when to stop."

She snatched up the agreement and tore it in half without even looking at it. "I already told you I'll be a proper wife from now on. What are you still mad at?

"I've completely cut Brian off, and Claire and the others are all into going back to their husbands now. I'll stay home and keep you company every day. Isn't that enough?"

The doorbell suddenly rang.

"It must be Claire and the others," Whitney said, her expression softening. "I invited them over for dinner today. I'll show them exactly how a model wife is supposed to behave.

"Don't embarrass me, okay? Don't sit there looking miserable in front of my friends."

The moment the door opened, Claire Crawford and several of her equally frivolous friends came pouring in.

To my surprise, a flamboyantly dressed young man stood behind Claire—and he wasn't her husband.

"Whitney, you really dumped Brian?" Claire asked loudly, throwing an arm around the man beside her as she laughed.

"I was only fooling with my husband yesterday. Once I transferred the assets out of his reach, I dumped him today and brought my new man out instead."

Whitney was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. The blow from the glass bottle had been devastating. Combined with her prolonged malnutrition and pneumonia that had yet to fully clear, it had caused severe intracranial bleeding. The man who attacked her was taken straight to the police station by Keira and faced serious charges for aggravated assault. Three days later, Whitney woke up. The only sound in the hospital room was the steady beeping of the monitors. She slowly turned her bandaged head, searching for the familiar figure she so desperately wanted to see. The door opened, but it wasn't me. It was Keira's assistant. Without a trace of emotion, he placed a stack of medical bills on the bedside table. "Ms. Shaw, Ms. Grant has covered all of your medical expenses. She did so out of basic courtesy, and also because she appreciates that you stepped in and took the blow for Mr. Livingston that day."Whitney's eyes dimmed. "Where's Sean?" Her cracked lips

A month later, a grand charity gala was being held at the largest five-star hotel in Jorgeton. Keira, as the evening's host, brought me along as her guest. I walked into the ballroom with my arm linked through hers, surrounded by flattering remarks and admiring glances. Halfway through the gala, I excused myself to use the restroom. As I stepped out into the corridor, a figure suddenly emerged from the shadows of the emergency stairwell and blocked my path. It was Whitney. She'd become so thin that she was almost unrecognizable, her hair messy and unkempt. If not for those bloodshot eyes that remained unmistakably hers, I might not have recognized her at all. "Sean," she called out in a trembling voice, not daring to come any closer. I frowned but said nothing. "I didn't come here to bother you," Whitney quickly explained, pulling a dirty plastic bag from inside her coat. She opened it carefully, revealing a simple handwoven bracelet with a small, roughly carved woode

After kneeling in the rain all night, Whitney developed a high fever the next day. It soon turned into acute pneumonia, and a passerby rushed her to the hospital. When she woke up, there was no one beside her. I wasn't there, nor were her friends. Even Brian, who had once sworn he'd always stay by her side, didn't show up. Whitney pulled the IV needle from the back of her hand and dragged her weak, feverish body out of the hospital. She wanted to withdraw the last of her savings and give it to me as compensation. But when she reached an ATM and entered her PIN, the screen showed a balance of zero. She froze up. She then frantically pulled up her transaction history. She discovered that the remaining 500,000 dollars in her account had been transferred to an unfamiliar account the day before.Brian was the one who made the transfer. He'd always known her banking PIN.A chill ran through Whitney as she dialed his number. The call connected quickly, and deafening music blared

Fall rain poured over Jorgeton for three days straight, and the temperature had dropped drastically. I sat by the floor-to-ceiling window in Grant Group's office on the top floor, sipping the hot black tea Keira made for me. "Whitney's company has already filed for bankruptcy," Keira said, handing me a document. "The properties and cars under her name have all been frozen by the bank, so she probably doesn't even have anywhere to stay now."I flipped through the document, skimming the densely packed list of debts. "She deserved it."Keira walked up behind me and gently massaged my shoulders, saying, "She's been standing downstairs for six hours today."I stiffened. Through the window, I could vaguely make out a figure standing in the rain outside the building, soaked from head to toe.It was Whitney. She didn't have an umbrella. She simply stood there in the rain, holding a bouquet of flowers in her arms. It was the exact bouquet of roses Keira had given me yesterday. Even

Whitney had no idea how she made it back to the villa. She stumbled into the living room and switched on every light, but under the harsh glare, the emptiness of the house only felt more pronounced. All my things were gone. She rushed into the bedroom and yanked open the nightstand drawer. There had once been a photo album inside, filled with memories of us from our college days to our wedding. Now, all that remained was a lonely spare key and the divorce agreement she'd torn in half."Sean…"Whitney sank to the floor, her hands trembling as she painstakingly pieced the torn agreement back together. Seeing our names on the agreement made her eyes sting. Suddenly, she remembered the day I had been critically injured in the car accident. She'd received the hospital's emergency notification saying that I was in critical condition, but at the time, she'd been holding a glass of wine while Claire and the other egged her on. "Whitney, your husband's putting on quite the show

A cool, distant voice came from behind Whitney, and everyone turned toward the sound.Keira had appeared on the deck at some point. Whitney clearly knew her. Her expression changed as she yanked her hand free from Keira's grip. "Ms. Grant, what are you doing here?" she snapped. "This is a private matter between my husband and me. It's not your place to interfere.""I'm afraid you've misunderstood, Ms. Shaw," Keira replied, stepping to my side. "I'm not just anyone."Whitney froze, her eyes darting between us. "What does that mean, Sean?" She immediately turned toward the others and shouted, "Look! This is why he refused to pour the drink. He's been keeping another woman behind my back!""Sean, how could you do this to Whitney?" Brian quickly piled on. I couldn't be bothered to listen to their nonsense. I unzipped the inner pocket of my suit jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper."Whitney, weren't you planning to activate that divorce agreement?"I threw the pape
