Chapter 2

مؤلف: Woodsy Leaves
Whitney stood frozen. Her gaze darted between the young man in Claire's arms and me sitting there in my loungewear, my expression stoic.

"Claire," she began, her voice strained. "Didn't you say you were going back to your family?"

A mocking laugh escaped Claire as she sauntered over to the dining table and glanced at the bowl of soup.

"Girl, you actually believed me?"

She patted Whitney on the shoulder, disdain crossing her face as she glanced at me.

"It's just a man. Sweet-talk him a little, and he'll be fine. How could you actually cook for him? That's so beneath you."

Whitney stiffened. What she feared most was being embarrassed in front of her friends.

I watched her coldly, waiting to see how she'd respond.

Suddenly, Whitney turned around and picked up the bowl of soup—the very one she'd spent four hours simmering and burned her hand making.

"Who said I made it especially for him?"

Right in front of everyone, she poured the entire bowl straight into the nearby trash can.

"I was just practicing, Claire," she said airily, not even sparing me a glance. "Come on. I'll take you all out for drinks."

As she grabbed her car keys and strode to the door, the young man beside Claire burst out laughing.

"Ms. Shaw really has some charm," he remarked. "She's way better than those women who need their husbands to keep them in line."

With her ego thoroughly stroked, Whitney immediately straightened her back.

Just as she reached the doorway, she stopped and tossed a cold remark over her shoulder.

"Sean, I'll pretend I never heard that nonsense about divorce. Your mom's rehabilitation expenses for the rest of the year are due soon.

"You'd better think carefully. Once you divorce me, who's going to pay for that bottomless pit?"

The door closed behind her.

I stared at the bowl of soup sitting in the trash for a few moments before taking out my phone and dialing a number.

"Ms. Grant, Whitney just tore up the agreement."

Keira Grant's voice came from the other end.

"Don't worry. The divorce petition she filed with the court three months ago has already taken effect. The notice of the default judgment would be delivered to her tomorrow."

"Good," I replied with a smile. "Thank you for your help."

The next morning, Whitney came home reeking of alcohol and cheap perfume. She tossed her coat onto the couch, slipped off her heels, and walked over to me.

I was having breakfast in the dining room.

"That college boy Claire brought yesterday was pretty good-looking, but I didn't sleep with another man last night," she said, pulling out a chair and sitting down.

"Claire said a woman was expected to play along when she was out having fun. She stayed faithful to her husband out of affection.

"I did you such a huge favor. Don't you think you should show me some appreciation?"

I swallowed my wholemeal bread and glanced up at her. "What kind of appreciation do you want? Should I give you a medal for your virtue?"

Whitney's expression immediately changed as she rose to her feet.

"Sean, don't be so sarcastic," she spat. "I didn't even bring Brian yesterday because I was trying to protect you in front of my friends. What more do you want?"

She actually had the nerve to call abandoning her lover an act of protection.

I set down my glass of milk.

"Whitney, have you forgotten? Three months ago, you left me alone at the hospital while I was bleeding to death and waiting for emergency surgery—all for Brian. All now you're telling me that not bringing him along was some kind of favor to me?"

At the mention of my surgery, something flickered in Whitney's eyes.

"That was an accident!" she argued. "Claire's husband was in a car accident too. He only needed half a month to recover before he went skiing with Claire. Do you really have to hold a grudge for this long?"

Irritated, she ran a hand through her hair before pulling a velvet box from her pocket and throwing it onto the dining table.

"Fine. Stop making a fuss," she grumbled. "Claire bought that college boy a Rolex yesterday, so I bought you the exact same one.

"Put it on and take a look. Then we'll consider the matter settled."

I stared at the box, not even feeling the slightest urge to open it.

"Claire bought that for her lover, yet you bought the same thing to give to your husband," I said, meeting her gaze. "Whitney, are you trying to copy Claire, or insult me?"

My words sent Whitney into a fit of rage. She snatched the box and hurled it onto the floor. It sprang open on impact, and an expensive diamond-set watch tumbled out.

"Sean, don't be so ungrateful!" she hissed. "I was willing to spend money to placate you because I still considered you my husband!

"If you keep acting like this, don't blame me for bringing Brian back. You think I won't?"

The moment she finished speaking, the doorbell rang again.

Whitney frowned and went to open the door.

Standing outside was none other than Brian, the very man she'd claimed to have cut ties with completely.

Whitney was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. The blow from the glass bottle had been devastating. Combined with her prolonged malnutrition and pneumonia that had yet to fully clear, it had caused severe intracranial bleeding. The man who attacked her was taken straight to the police station by Keira and faced serious charges for aggravated assault. Three days later, Whitney woke up. The only sound in the hospital room was the steady beeping of the monitors. She slowly turned her bandaged head, searching for the familiar figure she so desperately wanted to see. The door opened, but it wasn't me. It was Keira's assistant. Without a trace of emotion, he placed a stack of medical bills on the bedside table. "Ms. Shaw, Ms. Grant has covered all of your medical expenses. She did so out of basic courtesy, and also because she appreciates that you stepped in and took the blow for Mr. Livingston that day."Whitney's eyes dimmed. "Where's Sean?" Her cracked lips

A month later, a grand charity gala was being held at the largest five-star hotel in Jorgeton. Keira, as the evening's host, brought me along as her guest. I walked into the ballroom with my arm linked through hers, surrounded by flattering remarks and admiring glances. Halfway through the gala, I excused myself to use the restroom. As I stepped out into the corridor, a figure suddenly emerged from the shadows of the emergency stairwell and blocked my path. It was Whitney. She'd become so thin that she was almost unrecognizable, her hair messy and unkempt. If not for those bloodshot eyes that remained unmistakably hers, I might not have recognized her at all. "Sean," she called out in a trembling voice, not daring to come any closer. I frowned but said nothing. "I didn't come here to bother you," Whitney quickly explained, pulling a dirty plastic bag from inside her coat. She opened it carefully, revealing a simple handwoven bracelet with a small, roughly carved woode

After kneeling in the rain all night, Whitney developed a high fever the next day. It soon turned into acute pneumonia, and a passerby rushed her to the hospital. When she woke up, there was no one beside her. I wasn't there, nor were her friends. Even Brian, who had once sworn he'd always stay by her side, didn't show up. Whitney pulled the IV needle from the back of her hand and dragged her weak, feverish body out of the hospital. She wanted to withdraw the last of her savings and give it to me as compensation. But when she reached an ATM and entered her PIN, the screen showed a balance of zero. She froze up. She then frantically pulled up her transaction history. She discovered that the remaining 500,000 dollars in her account had been transferred to an unfamiliar account the day before.Brian was the one who made the transfer. He'd always known her banking PIN.A chill ran through Whitney as she dialed his number. The call connected quickly, and deafening music blared

Fall rain poured over Jorgeton for three days straight, and the temperature had dropped drastically. I sat by the floor-to-ceiling window in Grant Group's office on the top floor, sipping the hot black tea Keira made for me. "Whitney's company has already filed for bankruptcy," Keira said, handing me a document. "The properties and cars under her name have all been frozen by the bank, so she probably doesn't even have anywhere to stay now."I flipped through the document, skimming the densely packed list of debts. "She deserved it."Keira walked up behind me and gently massaged my shoulders, saying, "She's been standing downstairs for six hours today."I stiffened. Through the window, I could vaguely make out a figure standing in the rain outside the building, soaked from head to toe.It was Whitney. She didn't have an umbrella. She simply stood there in the rain, holding a bouquet of flowers in her arms. It was the exact bouquet of roses Keira had given me yesterday. Even

Whitney had no idea how she made it back to the villa. She stumbled into the living room and switched on every light, but under the harsh glare, the emptiness of the house only felt more pronounced. All my things were gone. She rushed into the bedroom and yanked open the nightstand drawer. There had once been a photo album inside, filled with memories of us from our college days to our wedding. Now, all that remained was a lonely spare key and the divorce agreement she'd torn in half."Sean…"Whitney sank to the floor, her hands trembling as she painstakingly pieced the torn agreement back together. Seeing our names on the agreement made her eyes sting. Suddenly, she remembered the day I had been critically injured in the car accident. She'd received the hospital's emergency notification saying that I was in critical condition, but at the time, she'd been holding a glass of wine while Claire and the other egged her on. "Whitney, your husband's putting on quite the show

A cool, distant voice came from behind Whitney, and everyone turned toward the sound.Keira had appeared on the deck at some point. Whitney clearly knew her. Her expression changed as she yanked her hand free from Keira's grip. "Ms. Grant, what are you doing here?" she snapped. "This is a private matter between my husband and me. It's not your place to interfere.""I'm afraid you've misunderstood, Ms. Shaw," Keira replied, stepping to my side. "I'm not just anyone."Whitney froze, her eyes darting between us. "What does that mean, Sean?" She immediately turned toward the others and shouted, "Look! This is why he refused to pour the drink. He's been keeping another woman behind my back!""Sean, how could you do this to Whitney?" Brian quickly piled on. I couldn't be bothered to listen to their nonsense. I unzipped the inner pocket of my suit jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper."Whitney, weren't you planning to activate that divorce agreement?"I threw the pape
