Chapter 3

작가: Bright Lights
This time, what hurt me wasn't just some holiday stunt.

It was finally realizing how blatantly biased she was, and how she purposefully ignored my emotional needs, treating me like a court jester.

Why should I keep someone like her around?

Yet, Joanna felt no guilt whatsoever. There was nothing but annoyance in her voice when she spoke.

"Everything you did was just to satisfy yourself. I wanted none of that, and you didn't even know! Fine, I get it. You’re just picking a fight because of the holiday thing. Let me guess, did your parents talk bad about me? Before the end of the year, I'll go…"

Talking to her was like speaking to a brick wall.

Completely disappointed, I stopped her from making any more false promises. "Give me my money back right now unless you want cops knocking at your door, got it?"

She cared too much about appearances to risk public humiliation.

There was a long silence on the other end before she exploded.

"You're the one who said that your money was mine to spend, so why are you getting all twisted up now that I've done it? Do you really think I care about that tiny amount of money? From now on, I won't touch a single cent of your money even if you beg me!"

The next second, she hung up. Soon afterward, the money was transferred back to my account.

Joanna deleted and blocked me everywhere.

For the first time, I didn’t beg her to add me back. Instead, I transferred a hundred thousand dollars to my parents.

The shocked, overwhelmed expressions on their faces made my chest ache.

After spending a proper holiday with them, I returned to the city a day early.

The apartment was empty, but there were unfamiliar sneakers by the entrance, men’s T-shirts, a razor, and even cologne.

The place was a complete mess. Clearly, Zion had already moved in.

I clenched my fist, but I acted like I didn't see any of it. I stepped over the dirty clothes on the floor as I went to collect my belongings, suppressing my disgust.

Since money wasn’t an issue, I quickly rented a fully furnished apartment and moved in immediately.

That evening, just after I finished cleaning, Joanna suddenly called.

"Did you go back home? Where are you?"

"Yeah. I moved out."

She didn't pursue the topic, only changing it. "Why didn't you tell me to come fetch you?"

In the past, I had always indulged her in everything.

I only ever had one request. Whenever I returned from a business trip, she had to come pick me up. At least then, I could feel like someone was waiting for me.

Now, I understood that care without sincerity meant nothing.

"There's no need. We've already broken up, so it wouldn't be appropriate."

"I think you're just feeling guilty!" Joanna's voice suddenly rose shrilly, accusing me. "Zion’s family’s staying at his apartment, so he had nowhere to live. You weren't home anyway, so I just let him stay over for a few days. How could you sneak back in just to break his things?"

Then, Zion's tearful voice chimed in.

"It's alright, Joanna. So what if the limited-edition jersey you bought me got cut to pieces? So what if our photos together were ripped up? Ethan’s probably just jealous. I’ll move out and give the apartment back to him."

I didn't even need to think to know that this was some ploy by Zion to incriminate me. It wouldn't have been the first time, after all.

Yet Joanna believed him without question. She immediately softened her tone to comfort him.

"It's fine. I'll buy you another jersey, and we can take more photos together. I'll teach this jealous brat a lesson for throwing his weight around!"

The subject of her words turned back to me, and her tone became cold immediately.

"Ethan, do you just hate seeing me happy? Apologize to Zion right now, or just wait until tomorrow at work!"

Nobody knew that the cold, untouchable female CEO everyone admired treated the man she had dated for seven years with nothing but harshness and selfishness, as if I were her enemy.

After spending seven years as her emotional punching bag, I was exhausted.

Calmly, I replied, "I didn't do it. You should change your temper, Joanna. No one's going to keep on indulging you anymore."

She froze for a second, before letting out a mocking laugh.

"Since when did I need anyone to indulge me? Ethan, I got where I am today all because of my hard work, so stop giving yourself too much credit!"

A sliver of panic crossed Zion's eyes, but on the surface, he acted tough and angry. "Who told you that?! If it weren't because I was in trouble, I wouldn't have asked you in the first place! You're the only person I can trust and rely on in this entire world… Don't you trust me either?"Joanna, to her credit, was no longer tricked by his flowery words. Angrily, she shouted, "Oh, stop it! I destroyed my relationship with Ethan because of you, and now you’re scamming me too? I can barely keep up with my mortgage payments anymore! Return everything I bought for you right now!"Their argument quickly attracted a crowd of curious onlookers.Zion looked Joanna up and down, as if he were appraising the value of a piece of merchandise, before his expression became ice-cold, losing all temperature."Tsk! Looks like you weren't completely brainless after all. I thought the CEO of a big company would be capable, but you're just a useless nobody without your boyfriend."If I knew this wa

She placed the cake into my mother’s hands, then hurriedly turned around and brought over a small gift box. She looked at me expectantly, like she was waiting for praise. When I didn’t take it, she opened it herself, revealing a tiny cake made of gold.My expression still didn’t change.A strange look crossed her face. "Is there anything I missed? I've made reservations at a five-star hotel. I'll serve you too, so don't be angry at me anymore, alright?"To think that at this point, she still thought that I was throwing a fuss over her celebrating the holidays with Zion and his family.Coldly, I said, "How did you know my address? Where did you get my key from?"She hesitated, taking a while to reply. "I-It's all in your files. You left your key on the table once, so I made a copy…"I let out a faint laugh; I couldn’t even fully explain the meaning of it. My emotions felt complicated, but more than anything, I found the whole situation laughably ridiculous. In the past, I thou

As I got closer, I realized the two people standing there were Joanna and Zion.Joanna looked unbearably smug."And you said you didn't want to win me back! You secretly went to see Mr. Devon behind my back just to recover the losses I caused, didn’t you? You could just be honest about it!"Zion smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Ethan, Joanna and I happened to spot you while we were eating nearby. So, I thought I should just come here and drive you home."For some reason, seeing the two of them together gave me the same suffocating feeling as stepping into sticky glue. The good mood I had instantly vanished."Where's my driver?" Under normal circumstances, unless I specifically told him otherwise, he should’ve been waiting here. But Zion had already reached for my car keys."What's the need of having a driver when I'm here? I told Joanna to tell him to leave. Hey, did you change your car? What happened to that junky old one you used to drive? If Joanna hadn’t told me, I

One of our mutual friends suddenly messaged me, complaining nonstop.[Bro, this kid is going to be the death of me! Joanna called me and told me she wanted to introduce a talented employee to me. I figured even if he wasn't at your level, he'd at least be somewhat decent, right? But this kid's a total nightmare! He plays games in the office all day, interrupts everyone else’s work, and even orders people to bring him tea and coffee!]I immediately realized who he was talking about.[...Zion Winters?]The reply came instantly; at that point, it was clear he had held back the frustration for ages.[YES! HIM! You know that weirdo too?! I've tried to hint at Joanna that he's no good, but she kept on insisting that I gave him a chance, so I couldn't refuse… Can't you help me talk your wife out of this?]My eye twitched. [We broke up ages ago, man.]Confused, my friend asked. [You did? But Joanna told me that you guys were only having a small spat. She even said that you're the one wh

She clearly assumed the chairman had arrived in a hurry and hadn’t had time to make proper arrangements. The very next second, the chairman said warmly, "That's not for you to worry about."He walked towards me, before handing me a brand-new appointment letter from his briefcase."Ethan, you are now the company's new CEO. Work hard, alright? You've always been my favorite!"After that, he gave a few more instructions before I saw him out. When I came back, my colleagues crowded around me and congratulated: "Congrats on the promotion, Mr. Yates! Today's a great day! Not only did we get rid of that slacker Zion, but you got a promotion too. Shouldn't you treat us to a meal?""Yeah! How about the barbecue place we went to for team building?"I had climbed my way up from the bottom myself, so I understood something very clearly.A good team atmosphere was the foundation for good results. Not to mention, most of these employees had been personally trained by me. Joanna was struck dumb by the document on her face. It slid to the ground, papers scattering everywhere. She stumbled, yet she didn't dare to say anything. She only bent down silently to gather the pages. The moment she flipped through the file, her eyes widened in shock."W-What exactly did I do wrong, Mr. Hart…?"Seeing her dumbfounded expression, Zion snatched the document. The second he saw the contents, he blurted out, "Demoted from CEO to department director? On what grounds?"His voice was so loud that everyone nearby heard it clearly, and they all burst into whispers. The chairman glanced at Zion, before turning to reply Joanna's question. "Hmph, you should know the answer yourself! Do you need me to repeat what you said to Mr. Devon? They told me that I forgot my roots, and that I hired an arrogant CEO. Not only have they cancelled business with us, they even told their associates to pull their investments too!"I’m already showing enough mercy by only demoting you, Jo
