Chapter 5

작가: Bright Lights
Zion blinked innocently and voiced a question on purpose.

"What's wrong, Joanna? Was it something I did? Should I spit out the food? I'll do it right now!"

Joanna's expression darkened as well, while the client shouted, "If you keep this man around, there's no need for us to continue!"

I immediately stepped in to smooth things over. "Please don't be angry, Mr. Devon. He's just an intern who doesn't know better. I'll have him apologize!"

Zion acted personally wronged, tearing up immediately. "You're just using this chance to get back at me… Fine, I'll apologize!"

Joanna instantly flew into a rage for his sake and stood up with a flourish. "You're the one who wants to ask for partnership, not me! Our company won't allow you to bully us like this!"

She proudly dragged Zion away, once again leaving me behind alone to clean up after the disaster she caused.

Had she completely lost her mind?

Mr. Devon, the head of Nextech, was one of our company's core clients. Losing him alone would cost the company ten percent of its revenue!

In the past, whenever Joanna offended clients with her cold attitude, I was always the one bowing and apologizing, drinking myself into the hospital just to repair the relationship and secure the deal.

I’d spent years patiently teaching her how to compromise. Seeing how miserable I became cleaning up after her, she had slowly learned restraint.

But now, for Zion's sake, she'd completely lost all reason once more.

Meanwhile, I was no longer the clown who would waste my time stabilizing her position as CEO.

Looking at the furious client, I sighed helplessly and apologized quietly.

Mr. Devon was so angry his chest heaved violently. "This doesn't have anything to do with you! To think that she'd become so arrogant after becoming CEO… I'll reflect this directly to your chairman!"

With that, I knew those two weren't going to get away with this scott-free.

As I left the restaurant, Joanna graced me with her presence once more, graciously unblocking me and sending me a message.

[Comfort the client well, and I'll let you come home tonight. I won't take rent from you anymore, either.]

How could she be so blindly confident, thinking that I'd help her again?

I scoffed, throwing her words to the back of my mind. I wasn't going to return, obviously.

Before I went to bed, I composed an email, detailing the events that happened tonight, before sending it to the chairman. Leaving behind evidence was important, after all.

The next day, at work, Joanna suddenly sent me a file, telling me to finish it and hand it back to her before noon.

The old me would have accepted the quest with a heart full of gratitude, thinking of it as a sign that she, if nothing else, trusted me.

Now, I replied with something else.

[Ms. Vale, this isn't within my job scope.]

The next second, Joanna sent me a message, telling me to go to her office.

I walked inside, expressionless. With my understanding of her, she'd probably called me to shout at me for not knowing what was good for me.

Instead, she awkwardly produced a gift box from her desk drawer, stuffing it into my palm.

I wanted to see what she was up to. The moment I opened the box, I laughed in disbelief.

It was a blue wristwatch, clearly designed for a child. Hell, even the 19.99 dollar price tag was still attached to it!

Seeing my frozen expression, Joanna actually thought I was overwhelmed with happiness.

"There, are you happy now? I nagged Zion and punished him last night, and he even came with me to pick this apology gift up. Can't you two play nice?"

She coughed awkwardly into her fist before continuing:

"Right. The chairman's coming today, so praise Zion in front of him, won't you? Tell him that Zion's the one who assisted you in achieving the results you have now. Wouldn't it be nice if the three of us could call the shots around here in the future?"

Wow, what a plan.

That very morning, Zion had proudly shown off the brand-new Patek Philippe watch on his wrist, bragging that Joanna bought it to comfort him after being "bullied" by a difficult client.

What was that about punishing, again?

I casually tossed the gift box back onto her desk.

"Thanks, but no thanks. This watch fits that kid Zion to a tee. As for my results, there's no reason for me to give them to someone else."

A sliver of panic crossed Zion's eyes, but on the surface, he acted tough and angry. "Who told you that?! If it weren't because I was in trouble, I wouldn't have asked you in the first place! You're the only person I can trust and rely on in this entire world… Don't you trust me either?"Joanna, to her credit, was no longer tricked by his flowery words. Angrily, she shouted, "Oh, stop it! I destroyed my relationship with Ethan because of you, and now you’re scamming me too? I can barely keep up with my mortgage payments anymore! Return everything I bought for you right now!"Their argument quickly attracted a crowd of curious onlookers.Zion looked Joanna up and down, as if he were appraising the value of a piece of merchandise, before his expression became ice-cold, losing all temperature."Tsk! Looks like you weren't completely brainless after all. I thought the CEO of a big company would be capable, but you're just a useless nobody without your boyfriend."If I knew this wa

She placed the cake into my mother’s hands, then hurriedly turned around and brought over a small gift box. She looked at me expectantly, like she was waiting for praise. When I didn’t take it, she opened it herself, revealing a tiny cake made of gold.My expression still didn’t change.A strange look crossed her face. "Is there anything I missed? I've made reservations at a five-star hotel. I'll serve you too, so don't be angry at me anymore, alright?"To think that at this point, she still thought that I was throwing a fuss over her celebrating the holidays with Zion and his family.Coldly, I said, "How did you know my address? Where did you get my key from?"She hesitated, taking a while to reply. "I-It's all in your files. You left your key on the table once, so I made a copy…"I let out a faint laugh; I couldn’t even fully explain the meaning of it. My emotions felt complicated, but more than anything, I found the whole situation laughably ridiculous. In the past, I thou

As I got closer, I realized the two people standing there were Joanna and Zion.Joanna looked unbearably smug."And you said you didn't want to win me back! You secretly went to see Mr. Devon behind my back just to recover the losses I caused, didn’t you? You could just be honest about it!"Zion smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Ethan, Joanna and I happened to spot you while we were eating nearby. So, I thought I should just come here and drive you home."For some reason, seeing the two of them together gave me the same suffocating feeling as stepping into sticky glue. The good mood I had instantly vanished."Where's my driver?" Under normal circumstances, unless I specifically told him otherwise, he should’ve been waiting here. But Zion had already reached for my car keys."What's the need of having a driver when I'm here? I told Joanna to tell him to leave. Hey, did you change your car? What happened to that junky old one you used to drive? If Joanna hadn’t told me, I

One of our mutual friends suddenly messaged me, complaining nonstop.[Bro, this kid is going to be the death of me! Joanna called me and told me she wanted to introduce a talented employee to me. I figured even if he wasn't at your level, he'd at least be somewhat decent, right? But this kid's a total nightmare! He plays games in the office all day, interrupts everyone else’s work, and even orders people to bring him tea and coffee!]I immediately realized who he was talking about.[...Zion Winters?]The reply came instantly; at that point, it was clear he had held back the frustration for ages.[YES! HIM! You know that weirdo too?! I've tried to hint at Joanna that he's no good, but she kept on insisting that I gave him a chance, so I couldn't refuse… Can't you help me talk your wife out of this?]My eye twitched. [We broke up ages ago, man.]Confused, my friend asked. [You did? But Joanna told me that you guys were only having a small spat. She even said that you're the one wh

She clearly assumed the chairman had arrived in a hurry and hadn’t had time to make proper arrangements. The very next second, the chairman said warmly, "That's not for you to worry about."He walked towards me, before handing me a brand-new appointment letter from his briefcase."Ethan, you are now the company's new CEO. Work hard, alright? You've always been my favorite!"After that, he gave a few more instructions before I saw him out. When I came back, my colleagues crowded around me and congratulated: "Congrats on the promotion, Mr. Yates! Today's a great day! Not only did we get rid of that slacker Zion, but you got a promotion too. Shouldn't you treat us to a meal?""Yeah! How about the barbecue place we went to for team building?"I had climbed my way up from the bottom myself, so I understood something very clearly.A good team atmosphere was the foundation for good results. Not to mention, most of these employees had been personally trained by me. Joanna was struck dumb by the document on her face. It slid to the ground, papers scattering everywhere. She stumbled, yet she didn't dare to say anything. She only bent down silently to gather the pages. The moment she flipped through the file, her eyes widened in shock."W-What exactly did I do wrong, Mr. Hart…?"Seeing her dumbfounded expression, Zion snatched the document. The second he saw the contents, he blurted out, "Demoted from CEO to department director? On what grounds?"His voice was so loud that everyone nearby heard it clearly, and they all burst into whispers. The chairman glanced at Zion, before turning to reply Joanna's question. "Hmph, you should know the answer yourself! Do you need me to repeat what you said to Mr. Devon? They told me that I forgot my roots, and that I hired an arrogant CEO. Not only have they cancelled business with us, they even told their associates to pull their investments too!"I’m already showing enough mercy by only demoting you, Jo
