Isabelle

Gestational Hypertension. What did that even mean? Why did my life get harder with every turn?

I stared hard at the wall behind the Doctor until my eyes began to hurt. Tears welled in my eyes, just waiting for a chance to gush out.

I returned my gaze to the Doctor. "What does that mean Doctor? What is my fate and that of my baby?"

"Please be calm. So you don't escalate your condition."

I swallowed hard, pressing a hand to my chest as if it'd calm my racing heart.

"Have you been through severe stress lately?" He asked.

I nodded.

"Well, you need to stop doing anything that would stress you, physically and emotionally too. Make sure to have adequate rest. Do you understand me?"

I dipped my head again. I didn't know what else to do.

I was too afraid to open my mouth because I would just burst into a round of sobs.

"I'm going to write your medication and you'd get them at the pharmacy. Please, stick to the time I'd prescribe. Eat good food. Eat lots of fruits and have adequate rest. You don't want anything to trigger your blood pressure. If not, your condition will be critical for both you and your child."

He looked at me one more time, his eyes serious as though he were etching the information into my head. "Do you understand me, Miss Isabelle?"

"I understand." I managed to croak out.

"Alright. Do have a great day. Please, take care of yourself."

"Thank you, Doctor." I responded, voice low.

After getting my medications at the pharmacy, I walked out of the hospital building, my eyes stinging and a weight settling in my chest.

"Cedar Street." I said as I flagged down a taxi and got in.

I stared out of the car window, watching the town blur as the car sped along. I needed a distraction from me, from my thoughts, from everything that bothered me. Yet, the Doctor's words would not stop ringing in my head. The diagnosis. The warnings.

How would it be possible for me to navigate this phase alone without going through stress? How could I stop overthinking when things were going sideways?

I feared for my life. For my baby's safety. Still, I needed to come out of this situation sane. How would I do it?

My head throbbed painfully with these questions until my eyelids sagged as exhaustion crashed into me.

I leaned back on the car seat and closed my eyes. It was only a matter of seconds before I dozed off.

"We're here, ma'am."

"What?" I jolted awake, my heart racing. It took a moment for my mind to register the current location. It looked nothing like the quiet neighborhood where my apartment was.

My eyes squinted as I gazed into the busy street. "Where are we please?"

"Charley Dickens." The driver responded in a clipped tone.

"Oh my God, I must've slept off. I'm sorry. Can you take me back to Cedar street?"

His jaw clenched as he replied. "No, I can't."

"But I told you the location when I got in. You could have informed me when–"

"Get off my car, woman." He cut me off with a growl.

What the actual hell. Was everyone in this town this detestable?

I pulled out some notes from my purse to pay him. He snatched them from my hand and sped away. Gosh. Asshole.

I stood by the pedestrian walkway, scanning for a vacant cab, the sun's glare forcing my eyes into slits. The streets pulsed with life – cars honked and sped by, engines revving, while people chattered and streamed into open supermarkets.

My ears peeked up as I caught an interesting conversation, my head spinning in the direction of the voices. Just a few steps away, two women stood by a Black SUV, conversing.

"I've been seeking a receptionist for my store for a while now." said one of the ladies – a slender, beautiful lady dressed in a straight, plum dress that clung to her like a second skin.

"Oh, the position is still vacant? Thought you found someone promising last week?" The other woman asked. She was dressed in a black, flared gown with sun glasses atop her hair.

The first lady shook her head. "Nah. They didn't seem like the right fit for the job."

"Okay. I'll see if I can recommend somebody."

My heart skipped a beat in excitement as I eavesdropped on their conversation. Every disappointment was a blessing in disguise right? Perhaps this was how fate wanted me to grant me favour.

Should I meet them? Or stay back?

I really needed this. But would they consider someone like me?

My stomach dropped at the thought. If others couldn't qualify? What would I do differently to get the job? Plus I had faced three rejections already in other places. Would theirs be any different?

My expression turned grim as I faced the road again. Would I give up like this? No way.

I strode towards them before I could talk myself out of it.

"Good afternoon ladies." I greeted and they spun to face me, startled.

"Good afternoon dear. Can we help?" The first lady answered.

Thank goodness. They weren't snubs.

I flashed a polite smile which they returned to my surprise.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop but I overheard you say something about a job vacancy at your establishment."

"Oh dear. Yes, I'm in desperate need of a competent receptionist. Can you recommend anyone please?"

My heart pounded even faster and I took a deep breath to tamp down my anxiousness. "I wish to apply for the position ma'am. I promise I'd deliver my duties perfectly."

They exchanged glances, having in a silent conversation with their eyes.

She focused her gaze on me once more.

"Are you sure dear? I mean, are you alright? You seem a little pale."

"I'm fine ma'am. I promise I will do the job very well." The words left my mouth faster than I intended.

"Okay then. My store's just a stone's throw from here." She pointed at a big store by the road. A flashy billboard which flashed with fluorescent bulbs lights, hung above the entrance. It read: Maya's Cosmetics.

"Be here tomorrow by ten for a brief interview. I'd be waiting."

"Oh my God, thank you so much ma'am. I'd be there."

I could barely contain my excitement as I retraced my steps to point where I stood before. Something told me this was the beginning of a remarkable journey.

Isabelle Two weeks had passed since I resumed work at Maya's Cosmetics. It had been wonderful so far – no serious issues, whatsoever. At 8:30 a.m., after finishing with the first customer, I was reading through some documents on my laptop when Mrs Maya's voice came through the intercom."Can I have a moment with you, Isabelle?""Sure thing ma'am."As I made my way towards her office, I stopped by Gen's desk to say hi. We had grown friendlier to each other during these past days. I waved at other attendants who were attending to customers as I passed by the counters.Minutes later, I arrived at my boss's office. Then, I knocked on the office door."Come in." Her voice rang from the inside."Good day, ma'am." I greeted, my lips curving into a small smile."Good day Isabelle. Please sit."I complied, while my thoughts reeled as I wondered why my boss had summoned me this early. She sat across from me, a polished ebony desk forming a wall between us. The walls were painted a crisp royal

Jason Dinner came to an end and the household staff began to clear the table. My father left, shooting me a sharp look as he went. I sighed and rolled my eyes. Could he take a goddamn break?Lila was still perched in her seat, whispering something into my mother's ear and they burst into a fit of laughter. My heart cracked at the sound of their laughter, a twinge of irritation rising within me. The hairs on my body stood on end as though I was the punchline to their joke. When did I become this petty?I sprang out of my chair, striding out of the room."Jason!"My mother's voice cut through the air, and I froze on the spot."We need to talk. Come with me."I spun around, facing her. A tight expression hung over her face as she stood akimbo. She lifted her eyebrow as if to say, "where did you think you were going?""Excuse me, sweetheart. Let me steal your man for a moment." She winked at Lila, a smile tugging at her lips and I cringed. She walked over to me, grabbed my hand and dragg

JasonI was seated in my office, laptop on my desk, sorting through emails that needed urgent attention when a phone ring cut through the quiet atmosphere.I picked up my phone. "Hello, Mum."Her voice came through the other end of the line. "Jason, sweetie. How's your day going at work?""Normal. What do you want, Mum?"Her voice dripped with sweetness and I knew she was up to no good."Can't I call my son and ask about his day?" She let out a sigh, sounding offended. I knew her too well to believe that."I'm not saying that. But what is it you want from me? You can't possibly call me at this time only to check up on me. Cut the drama please.""Fine. Since you don't like it when I act nicely. I want you home today for a family dinner. Lila's invited. I mean, she's here anyway. So, see you at six."She had returned to her usual, domineering nature."Mum, but—""No buts, be here by 6 p.m."I rubbed my temples in frustration. "Fine."She hung up before I could say anything else.Damn!

LilaMy black Toyota Highlander pulled over in front of the Blackwoods' Mansion. Turning off the ignition, I grabbed my Chanel handbag and stepped out of the car.Taking a mirror out of the bag, I stared at my reflection. Perfect. My make-up was done lightly. I was here to impress Jason's parents, so there was no need to over-do it. My hair was tied into a bun with a few strands pulled out in front, made into curls.A light pink gown clung to my skin, accentuating my curves and revealing the bulge of my stomach. I smiled at my expression in the mirror, satisfaction shining in my eyes. After running my hand over my head, smoothing a few strands into place, I returned the mirror to the bag. Then, I made my way into the house, my low-heeled shoe clicking on the floor.A rush of cold air swept over me from the air conditioning vents, making my skin tingle. My eyes landed on the artwork hanging on the wall beside a large flat-screen TV. A chandelier was suspended on the ceiling, casting a

Isabelle My eyeslids fluttered rapidly as I wanted to be sure this was real. It took a moment for my brain to register what was going on, my head spiralling as I thought of ways to come out of this matter. Focusing my gaze on the woman, I put on a remorseful expression. "I'm sorry ma'am. I apologize for the hitches you encountered while using the app. Actually, the app has been under review because we want a seamless experience for our clients." I paused to see if my words had any effect. Fortunately, her eyes were fixated on me as she hung on every word I spoke. I continued. "However, we are very sorry for the issue. We promise to rectify this and give you a very beautiful experience." "If you say so." She replied, voice low, much to my surprise. "Thank you ma'am." I said, as my lips curved into a professional smile. "I'd like to get some body lotions. Would you recommend some?" "Alright ma'am. One of our attendants will attend to you shortly." Looking around the store,

IsabelleA surge of happiness flooded me as I woke, which showed in the way I leapt off the mattress, despite a few cranky joints.Today was going to be different. It had to be. I felt a whole lot stronger and refreshed, considering the pains and stress I went through yesterday.Yesterday, when I had returned home, I could barely lift my arms. All I did was chew a few slices of bread, take my medication, and sink into the mattress, fading into a deep sleep in seconds.I checked the time on my phone. 9.00 a.m. already?Panic set in as I rushed to get ready, hurrying through the room into the bathroom. I ran through the shower within minutes, dried my body with a towel, and raced back to the bedroom to dress for the interview today. At exactly 10 a.m., I walked into Maya's Cosmetic store, greeted by the sight of neat, tiled floors and rows of gleaming counters displaying an array of cosmetics. A shop attendant, a bright-eyed young woman with a lovely smile, stood nearby, chatting with
