Chapter 5

"Gail..." Denis muttered in disbelief.

The carpet was soaked in blood, and the room showed clear signs of a violent struggle. Those men were nowhere to be seen, and Gail was gone as well.

His heart lurched. He rushed through the suite, checking every corner and opening every adjoining door, but there was no sign of her anywhere.

He pulled out his phone in a panic and called her immediately. No one was answering.

He tried again and again, but the same automated message came through every time

Denis stared at me in shock. Before he could react, Barbara stepped between us."Gail, if you need to hit someone, hit me! This isn't his fault. I'm the one who caused your mother's death and hurt you..." She thrust her face toward me. "Go ahead. Hit me."I stared at her, wondering how the bright, outgoing woman I'd once called my best friend had turned into the person who had caused me the greatest nightmare of my life."Are you two done with the performance?" I asked coldly.Denis shoved Barbara aside without hesitation and stepped toward me again."Gail, please don't misunderstand. Now that I've seen what she's really like, I hate her more than you do. I'll never go near her again. I came here to take you home."His eyes were filled with hope, as though he believed I would run back into his arms the way I always had and forgive him without a second thought. But that was never going to happen again.I looked him straight in the eye and gave him a cold, humorless smile. "Denis

  • Leave When Love Doesn't Come   Chapter 7

As the porcelain shard cut into my wrist, my mind descended into chaos. In that second, I said goodbye to both my marriage and to the friendship I had cherished for so many years. Maybe I should have seen this double betrayal coming sooner, but waiting until now had only driven me deeper into despair.I was ready to let everything end when the door to the VIP suite burst open. A familiar figure rushed inside and pulled me into his arms."Why would you do this? I won't let you die!" he said frantically.I didn't have the strength to look up or answer. The moment I heard his voice, I passed out. When I opened my eyes again, Harrison Odom was sitting by my bedside.I wasn't surprised that he would show up. He had once told me that if Denis ever betrayed me, he would be the first person to take me away from him.Now he was keeping that promise. He had seen the videos Denis and Barbara filmed together."Some devoted husband he is. Holding his mistress's hand at what he thought was t

Denis's voice rose with panic. "What did you say?""Sir, it's only a rumor going around among the staff in the suite," the assistant explained quickly. "I don't know whether it's true."The image of that blood-soaked VIP suite flashed through Denis's mind, sending a chill down his spine. "I'm heading back right now. And find out how her mother died."He hung up and rushed back to the hotel. In the hallway, the manager was angrily chewing out one of the servers."That's Mrs. Lowery in there! Whatever you see, you need to tell the police everything!"The server could only stand there trembling, wiping tears from her face.Denis hurried over and forced himself to speak calmly. "Tell me what you saw.""I... I saw those men attacking her, but they threatened me and told me to keep quiet. Later, I saw her cut her wrist.""What?" Denis's eyes widened, and he nearly collapsed. Those men had never intended to apologize. They had attacked Gail again, and this time, he had been the one

Denis demanded. "Where are the people who were in this room?""I... I don't know, sir!" the waiter stammered. "I'll call the police right away!"Denis had no intention of standing around waiting for answers. He was already heading for the door when Barbara came running up, her face full of shock."How c

  • Leave When Love Doesn't Come   Chapter 4

Back in college, these same men had stripped my clothes, poured urine over me, and viciously assaulted me.Denis was the first on the scene that night. He took shattered glass bottles with his hands, tearing three tendons to pull me free.Wrapping his bandaged, trembling fingers around mine, he had wiped away my tears and sworn, "It's over now. No one will ever bring it up again."It had taken me three agonizing years to crawl out from that shadow.I stared at him, my voice trembling in shock. "How does Barbara even know about this?"Denis shifted, avoiding my gaze. Barbara stepped beside him, her grin sharp and triumphant. "He told me when we were in bed once. You know, just a fun little bedtime story."The blood in my veins turned to ice. The most devastating trauma of my life was nothing more than pillow talk to him.Barbara gestured to the men, her voice dripping with mock righteousness. "As your best friend, I wanted to give you closure. These boys came to apologize."The

"Gail, what are you doing?"Denis surveyed the cluttered piles of clothes on the floor before letting his gaze settle on the dark circles bruised beneath my eyes. A flicker of panic flashed across his face."Nothing. I just feel like taking a trip," I replied quietly.Relieved, he walked over and crouched down in front of me. "I knew you wouldn't stay mad at me forever. As soon as I get a break at work, I'll take you on a real vacation."He paused, a sudden thought striking him. "Oh, right. Come to the company gala tomorrow. We all just survived a near-fatal flight; it's worth celebrating."I hesitated, then nodded. I'd consider it a fitting final curtain on this pathetic marriage and friendship....At the gala the next evening, Barbara floated through the room with a bottle of wine in hand, offering dramatic toasts while clinging possessively to Denis's arm.It was a cruel reenactment of how he and I had greeted guests at our wedding. The room's mocking gazes landed squarely
