Chapter 2

Author: Fish in Salt
When Sean first noticed that the Harrisons were going bankrupt, he had abandoned Maddie without a word and fled abroad without hesitation.

Meanwhile, I was the one who stayed by her side, ignoring all my shareholders' advice and pouring all my resources into her family's company to help revive it.

When Maddie's parents, Charlie Harrison and Esther Rowland, saw that their company was beginning to recover, they proposed a marriage alliance under the guise of strengthening ties.

However, I knew that they just wanted me to continue pumping money and resources into their company without expecting anything in return.

Also, my grandmother, Rose Hebert, had always been particularly fond of Maddie. She'd even declared that she would only ever allow me to marry Maddie because she didn't want anybody else to be her granddaughter-in-law.

I didn't really care about materialistic things like these, even if I was just doing it for the sake of fulfilling Grandma's dying wish.

At first, I thought that Maddie and I would naturally continue walking hand-in-hand through life after getting married. Yet, Sean's reappearance had ruined everything.

When that thought struck me, I said decisively, "You want to continue being engaged? Fine. But you're going to have to cut off all contact with him."

Ultimately, Maddie deleted all of Sean's contact information and removed him from all her social media accounts right in front of me. She also threw the two unsightly wedding rings into the trash can.

The sullen anger in my heart somewhat dissipated only after I watched Sean leave, looking resentful yet dejected. It wasn't until then that I told Tom to proceed with the wedding arrangements as usual.

After dinner, Maddie insisted on going to bed early to be in the best condition for the wedding the next day. I didn't think much about it and went to my bachelor party that my good friend had decided to throw for me.

Halfway through the party, I realized that my phone wouldn't stop vibrating in my pocket. I looked at it and realized that the bed alarm in our marital home was going off.

Back when I was furnishing the house, I decided to get the best of everything money could buy. The more expensive it was, the better I thought it would be, and I had bought this smart mattress at the salesman's recommendation.

The salesman told me that the mattress could record data based on the couple's sexual activity and frequency. It would even automatically sound the alarm if the frequency was abnormal.

However, Maddie and I weren't officially moving in until tomorrow. So, logically speaking, there shouldn't be anyone in that home right now.

I had a sudden bad feeling about this.

I ignored my friends who tried to get me to stay and drove back as quickly as possible.

As soon as I entered the place, I saw clothes scattered haphazardly across the living room floor, while lewd and intimate sounds came from the bedroom.

I kicked the bedroom door wide open.

Maddie got a huge scare and let out an ear-piercing scream, instinctively hiding behind Sean to hide her naked lower body.

It was so painfully obvious what they'd been doing.

However, Maddie quickly recovered from the initial shock and angrily demanded, "Have you been stalking me, Benjamin Caldwell?"

I held my phone up, the screen still displaying the red alarm bell, as I looked at her coldly.

"So, this is what you meant by getting your 'beauty sleep'?"

A flash of guilt appeared in her eyes. She wrapped her body in the sheets and stood up, trying to defend herself.

"Sean and I grew up together. We didn't just sleep together in the same bed while we were younger. We even showered together often. Also, I was just saying goodbye to him properly. I promise you that we won't see each other again after tonight."

While she spoke, Sean had already put on the robe that I had specifically gotten for myself to wear on my wedding night, walking up to me.

"True love is knowing when to let go, Ben. It's not suffocating control like this. Maddie hasn't even married you yet, and you're already tracking her every move like this. Surely that's not a very gentlemanly thing to do?"

I glanced at him and said disdainfully, "Sure, then I'll let go right now. Let's see if Maddie dares to leave with you."

As soon as I said that, he immediately went over and grabbed her arm.

"Didn't you just say earlier that you have absolutely no feelings for Benjamin? Then, won't you come with me?"

I was also curious about Maddie's decision. Would she choose love or money at a time like this?

After a long time, she finally shoved Sean's hand away.

However, Sean grossly miscalculated. If it hadn't been for me, Harrison Group would have already gone under years ago.So, if Sean wasn't able to get a large amount of money as soon as he got back, he wouldn't even have to wait for his creditors to come after him—he would just flee as soon as possible.Last night, while everyone in the Harrison family was focused entirely on the stock market, Sean looted everything of value in the house. And now, he had vanished without a trace.Even though Maddie reported it to the police, they told her that there wasn't much they could do. After all, nobody knew whether Sean was still in the country or not.Maddie probably just realized that there was no way she could turn the tide against me anymore, so she could no longer be as smug and arrogant as she used to be. Her eyes were still red as she fell to her knees just as I was about to turn and leave."Benjamin, I'm begging you. What do I have to do for you to help me? I admit that I was in the

I put on my coat and slowly made my way downstairs, immediately catching sight of Charlie, who was sweating profusely, and Maddie, who was standing next to him looking completely lost.Charlie saw me and eagerly dragged Maddie along to greet me."Benjamin, please, I'm begging you. I never should have said that yesterday, and I also should never have let Maddie cheat on you and do such horrible things to disappoint you."Won't you forgive us? Look, I also brought Maddie with me. We're giving her to you. You can do anything you want with her."He then shoved her toward me before taking out a sheaf of documents from his bag with a fawning smile on his face."These are all the core documents of Harrison Group and a share transfer agreement for 10% of the company shares. I've already signed everything. I'm willing to give them all to you."You want to marry my daughter, don't you? I've also prepared the wedding entourage and all. The town hall just opened for the day. Shall we just go

Esther continued yelling in my face, "I'm telling you that you're going to get your karma very soon! Let's see how much longer you can stay as ruthless and arrogant as you are now!"Then, she turned to leave.Maddie didn't leave with her. She looked at me worriedly and finally spoke up after a long time."Benjamin, from the very beginning, did you ever love me at all?"I stared into her dark eyes, unable to tell what was on her mind. However, the few sweet moments I shared with her in the past suddenly resurfaced in my mind. When I was working overtime through the night, she would be cradling a comic book waiting next to me. When I nearly forgot about my birthday, she had someone custom-make a cake for me and delivered it to my office. When Grandma had to be rushed to the emergency room and the doctor warned us several times that she might not make it, Maddie stayed by my side, her eyes as bright as the stars as she told me, "I will always be by your side no matter what happens."

Dad flew into a rage once he heard the full story. He flipped the table next to us and roared, "Preposterous! The Harrisons think we're pushovers, don't they? I support everything you do, Benjy!"There's no need for us to consider past affection anymore now that they've shown how mercilessly they think they can bully us!"…Maddie soon found her way to the hospital, along with Charlie and Esther. She probably didn't think that her rash decision would have caused Grandma's death either.Just as she was about to walk into the morgue, I stepped forward and stopped her."Grandma would never want to see the face of her murderer again. You don't deserve to see her now, Maddie Harrison!"She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she could only apologize."Regardless of whether you believe me or not, I didn't do it on purpose," she said. "Sean was in a terrible state, and he also has a blood-clotting disease. If anything really happened to him because of th

I hung up on her right after that.I didn't even care about what Maddie's expression was after I said those words to her. I was determined to cripple Harrison Group by hook or by crook.Afterward, I immediately had Tom send out the intimate photos of Maddie and Sean that I'd prepared beforehand.I also simultaneously announced the cancellation of the engagement and marriage alliance using my official company account. I severed all ties between the Harrisons and the Caldwells with immediate effect.Soon, the whole industry was in an uproar, and major outlets reported the news."The Harrisons' Fallen Heiress Abandons Fiance for Unknown Punk. Family Business Now Headed Toward Ruin."All the other companies that previously coveted Harrison Group didn't sit still any longer either and also began their takeover plans.Maddie called me several times after that. I didn't answer any of them, so she began texting me instead."What the hell do you want from me, Benjamin Caldwell? Didn't I

I stared at Grandma's deathly pale face in horror, my eyes turning red at once."Hold on, Grandma… Just hold on… The ambulance is coming… I'll get you to the hospital…"The ambulance arrived quickly. However, just as I was about to carry Grandma in, Maddie suddenly appeared with Sean in tow, rushing toward the ambulance."Wait, send us to the hospital first! You have to send us there first! Sean has a blood clotting disorder! He absolutely can't afford to get hurt!"I was caught off guard when she shoved me aside, and I nearly collapsed to the ground due to my faltering strength. However, Maddie didn't even spare me a single glance. She only looked at Sean, who had a tiny cut on his forehead."Grandma's old anyway. It doesn't matter whether she lives or not. But it's my and Sean's wedding today, and we absolutely must get through it!"I stared at her in disbelief."Grandma watched you grow up. Are you seriously going to let her die without doing anything about it?"Maddie didn
