Chapter 3

Author: Moore
The next afternoon, there was a sudden knock on the door.

I'd just placed the last bottle of healing potion into my leather bag when the door was shoved open from the outside.

Ronan's tall figure appeared in the doorway. He looked as though he'd rushed over in a hurry. His black cloak was still damp with night dew, and his breathing was slightly ragged.

The moment he saw me, he visibly relaxed. He swept his gaze around the room, his handsome brows furrowing deeply.

"Why did you move out of Moon Shadow Manor to stay in such a remote, shabby place like this?"

I calmly put away my leather bag and answered softly, "That is the residence of the future Luna. It's not appropriate for someone about to embark on a long journey to continue living there."

Ronan's frown deepened. "Since when do we need to follow stupid rules like that? This place is too isolated—it's not safe for you to live here alone. I'm moving in tonight to stay with you."

I paused for a moment, then gave a small shake of my head. "That won't be necessary. I'm about to leave the pack soon, so I want some time alone."

In the past, Ronan would never have offered such words. If anything, he always complained that I was too clingy and meddled too much. He'd even get irritated if I so much as asked where he'd been.

Yet now, he was offering to stay with me. What a pity that it was far too late.

In the air, the Alpha's pheromones grew increasingly restless, a reaction wolves only displayed when unsettled.

After a moment, he suddenly said, "If you don't want to go to the Onyx Wolf pack alone, I can go with you."

My fingertips curled sharply. For a second, I thought I'd misheard him. After all, just yesterday, he'd been scheming to send me away so he could enjoy so-called freedom with Willow, and now he was suddenly offering to go with me?

I slowly lifted my head, meeting his eyes. "Ronan, the silver arrow wound on your leg hasn't healed yet, and the pack can't do without you right now. I can go by myself."

Ronan's expression froze, and a trace of awkwardness flickered through his eyes. After all, he'd faked the silver arrow wound from the start.

Just then, a familiar girlish voice came from outside the door, "Ronan!"

Willow came running in with her arms full of moonberries she'd just bought. As if completely oblivious to the tension in the room, she threw herself smilingly beside Ronan.

"Why did you run off so fast? I couldn't even catch up with you."

Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she scrunched up her nose in dismay.

"Oh, no! You promised yesterday to go with me to the taming grounds today. Silver Moon wolf cubs only recognize the first person they see as their master. If you don't come with me, I'll be scared."

Willow was very good at playing sweet and helpless, and she knew just how to melt a wolf's heart. With just a few words from her, Ronan—who had been on the verge of questioning me—once again cast me aside and left with her.

Not long after they left, my phone suddenly lit up.

"Freya, so what if Lucian wants you as the Luna? It's me Ronan loves. By the way, I bet you didn't know the pack battle and betrayal were all fake. Ronan was never really hurt. He just wanted to send you away.

"He said you're too docile and boring. He also said he wanted to create some beautiful memories with me before being bound to you. So, do you get it now? I'm the she-wolf who truly brings him happiness and joy."

Even though I already knew the truth, seeing Willow's message still sent an unavoidable, sharp pang through my heart.

My phone lit up again.

"Freya, trust me when I say I can make sure Ronan won't even come to see you off tomorrow."

I stared quietly at my phone screen. I didn't move an inch, not even when the first light of dawn began to creep in.

The escort team Lucian had arranged arrived. I shouldered my backpack and silently walked out of my temporary residence.

And just as I was stepping past the pack boundary, my phone finally lit up once more.

Ronan's low voice came through, "Freya, there's something I want to tell you."

Suddenly, I was wide awake. Was Ronan about to tell me the truth? If he decided to come clean, I might find it in me to give him a chance.

But he only said to me hurriedly, "Something came up with the pack, so I'm afraid I won't be able to see you off today. I'll make it up to you once you've returned from the Onyx Wolf pack."

Rather than reply, I silently powered off my phone. Then, I turned around and, without so much as a backward glance, headed in the completely opposite direction from the Onyx Wolf pack.

Needless to say, I was going to the Moon Goddess' Sacred Ground.

From this moment on, Ronan and I had nothing to do with each other anymore.

The Moon Goddess' Sacred Ground was warded against all the violence and rancor of the mortal world. Even the highest-ranking Alpha, should he force his way in, would be hurled back violently by the barrier. However, Ronan refused to admit defeat, let alone forgive himself.Driven by an obsessive need to see me, he threw himself day after day against the barrier, pleading until every shred of his pride and dignity was gone.Seeing that his obsession ran too deep and that he continued to persist relentlessly, Lyra came to ask what I wanted to do about him. She knew I had long since let go of the past.Rather than let Ronan keep clinging to his obsession outside the barrier, it would be better to make an exception and open the barrier to let him in. Once he witnessed my current state, all his lingering attachments would be completely severed, and from then on, he would never bother me again.I nodded serenely. After all, we had 18 years of tangled history between us, and some things

Under the tight escort of the Silver Wolf unit, I traveled for days on end and finally arrived at the Moon Goddess' Sacred Ground. The moment I stepped into this place, the crescent mark on my wrist began to burn inexplicably, as if answering the call of this mysterious land.A shewolf dressed in a silver robe stood waiting for me at the entrance. Her eyes were like two full moons—calm and unfathomably deep."You've finally come," she spoke with a serenity that made it seem as though she'd been waiting for a very long time."Who are you?" I asked."I am the divine messenger of the Moon Goddess' Sacred Ground, Lyra Sterling."Lyra told me who she was, and then her expression turned solemn as she earnestly asked me to confirm what I truly wanted."I already know about your past. Have you truly thought this through? Once you officially step into the Moon Goddess' Sacred Ground, all your emotional bonds will be completely severed, and nothing from your past can ever be restored."I

Willow belatedly realized what she'd just said, her face draining to a ghastly white. She scrambled forward on her hands and knees, clutching at the hem of Ronan's pants."Alpha Ronan, none of what I just said was true. Please don't hold it against me," she begged in a voice filled with regret. However, Ronan didn't spare her another glance. Instead, he simply looked up toward the door and said in a firm, resounding voice, "Pass the order down—revoke Willow's qualification to enter the pack."Strip her of her place in the Moon Goddess Festival. Without my permission, no one is to grant her a pass to approach the inner city."Willow's head shot up, all color draining completely from her face. This was an outright banishment from the circle of power. For an Omega who depended on the strong for survival, it was nothing short of destroying her future. She finally broke down, shrieking, "Ronan, you can't do this to me! You were the one who pursued me first! You can't blame everything

The Alpha dominance in the air was so thick it was almost tangible.Willow's face paled, but she still forced herself to put on a hurt expression. "Ronan, what are you talking about? How could I possibly do such a thing?"With red-rimmed eyes, she walked over and reached out to tug at his sleeve. "I know you're upset that Freya is missing, but you can't just blame everything on me."But in the next second, Ronan violently flung her hand away. He stared at her intently, the rage he'd been suppressing for days surging in his eyes."The memory stone from the Dark Market tavern, the attendants at the taming grounds, and the Omegas you bribed—need I go on?"Willow's breath caught sharply in her throat. She'd never imagined Ronan would have already investigated to this extent. The room fell into sudden silence. Willow parted her lips, but not a single word of defense came out.Seeing her reaction, Ronan immediately understood everything, and the last trace of warmth in his eyes vanish

"How do you know about that?" Ronan practically blurted out.Lucian's expression turned utterly cold. "You really thought you could fool everyone with those stupid stunts of yours? You faked betrayal, pretended to be injured to send Freya away, and even gave her Luna Ring to Willow! "I used to think you were just young and reckless, but I never imagined you could sink this low!"Ronan's breathing turned sharp and uneven as a panic unlike anything he'd ever known surged through him uncontrollably."Does Freya know about all this too?"Lucian looked at him quietly with eyes that seemed to see right through him.Ronan's mind went blank with a deafening roar. It suddenly hit him—the eerily calm way I'd been before leaving, how I'd stopped vying for his attention, and the quiet resignation in my gaze whenever our eyes met.His chest felt as though it'd been seized in a brutal grip, the pain so sharp he could barely breathe."Where exactly did Freya go? I'm going to find her and bri

  • Leaving Luna: Chosen by the Moon Goddess   Chapter 4

After hanging up the phone, Ronan was struck by an odd, fleeting sense of emptiness. But before he could dwell on it, Willow's hurt voice came from behind him, "Ronan, do you regret staying here with me?"Ronan frowned and replied, "Freya is about to set off for the Onyx Wolf pack, and I'm just a little worried about her."Willow stood at the edge of the woods with red-rimmed eyes. She looked at him with big, sad puppy eyes and said, "Tonight is the full moon. All the young werewolves will be going into the woods for the night revelry."But you've been on the phone with Freya this whole time, so I thought you didn't want to spend the night with me anymore."The irritation that had been brewing in Ronan eased somewhat at her words. He raised a hand and rubbed his forehead.I was just going to the Onyx Wolf pack. I'd been so obedient since I was little, and I liked him so much, so there was no way I would actually leave him. Once I was back, the two of us would still be just like b
