Chapter 4

Penulis: A Fleeting Cloud
Now, those emerald charms were left behind, rotting away in the weeds of an overgrown forest.

I crouched down, collecting the charms from the dirt before shuffling over to a nearby creek. Without hesitation, I tossed them directly into the rushing water.

They cracked against a boulder beneath the surface of the water, shattering into pieces.

The roaring current instantly swept the fragments downstream, and with them, another massive block of my memories vanished into thin air.

Pretty soon, I'd be just like those emeralds, making a quiet exit from this world.

"Guess this place doesn't guarantee happily ever after," I muttered.

Sierra and I fell in love right here in Yearnerwood. I never expected this would be the exact spot where we'd hit the end of the line.

Staring down at the nasty, bleeding wound, I tore a strip of fabric from my shirt and tied it around the wound as a makeshift tourniquet.

I endured the pain as I began the long, agonizing limp back toward civilization.

I had been walking for hours and had barely reached the outskirts of town when Sierra finally tore down the road in her car.

"Honey, I thought Riley had been bitten. It was an emergency, and I panicked—"

But king ratsnakes weren't poisonous, and she knew it.

She lunged forward and locked me in a desperate hug. "This is all my fault, Caleb. I'm so sorry. Please tell me you aren't mad."

Sierra looked frantic, a bead of sweat tracing down her forehead to the tip of her nose.

I couldn't match her intensity.

Pulling away from her, I kept my voice flat. "When do we file for divorce? I'll sign the papers, no questions asked."

At those words, Sierra's eyes flickered with surprise.

"H-Honey, what are you talking about?" she stammered. "I'm not divorcing you. We're in this for the long haul."

Her eyes darted down, finally catching the dark, crimson stain soaking through the makeshift tourniquet on my leg. Shock and concern twisted her features.

"You're bleeding. I'm taking you to the hospital."

As she spoke, she grabbed my hand to pull me toward the car, but I held my ground, pushing her arm away.

"If we don't end things, where does that leave Riley?" I asked.

Sierra's brows knitted into a frown. "Caleb, Riley is moving into our place. My cousin passed away, and he's drowning in grief. What's wrong with looking after him? Besides, Mom's the one who suggested it."

"He's family," she continued. "Even if I go out of my way to take care of him, he's never going to take your place. You're always my priority."

Was he just family?

I tugged at the corners of my lips. "I don't want another man living under my roof, especially not for the rest of our lives."

Sierra's expression soured. "Caleb, I love you. You're my husband. He's only moving in because my mother can't stand seeing him stay in that empty house, surrounded by memories of my cousin. I couldn't say no to her.

"We've made it through seven years together, so don't tell me you doubt my feelings for you. I'm caught in the middle here. Can't you give me a little grace?"

"Let's not waste any more time," she snapped. "I need to get you to the hospital, and I've got things to handle later."

When she noticed that I was about to argue, she looked away.

I lowered my head, keeping my mouth shut as I climbed into the car.

This was the same woman who willingly walked away from the Parker family fortune just to be with me. She had stood up to her family and declared her love for me.

She managed to pull off a miracle back then, but now that her mother was asking her to take care of her late cousin's husband, she couldn't say no.

Whenever Riley was in danger, she completely abandoned me even if I needed her just as much, throwing herself into taking care of his problems without a second thought and even forcing my own child into his life.

Why was it so hard for her to just admit that she had checked out of our marriage?

But I supposed facing the truth could be terrifying. After all, falling for one's dead cousin's husband wasn't exactly a great look.

Once we reached the hospital, Sierra handled my registration at the front desk without uttering a single word to me.

Before she left, she offered a cold, parting remark. "Get some rest."

Joanne eventually drove the snake away.Clutching the hem of my shirt in terror, Stella offered a tearful apology. "I'm sorry, Dad."Then, she quickly added, "You're amazing, Dad. You aren't scared of snakes."I gently wiped her tears away and smiled. "It's okay. You're my little girl, and it's my job to protect you. But it looks like we need to brush up on our nature facts. That snake wasn't venomous at all. Once we leave this place, I'll teach you how to identify all kinds of critters, okay?"Stella's eyes lit up, and she nodded vigorously. "Okay!"Amelia stood beside Sierra, her teeth chattering from the fright as she stared at me with a look of pure betrayal."D-Dad… why didn't you save me?"She was sobbing so hard that she hiccuped, and her words came out in jagged gasps.Seeing that I was done comforting Stella, Sierra took Amelia by the hand and walked over to me."Amelia is your flesh and blood," she murmured, her voice laced with sorrow. "Do you really have the hear

"You were so in love with me…"Sierra kept looking at me with hopeful eyes as she spoke, as if this act of self-destruction would somehow jog my memory. But she was bound to be disappointed. The system had done a thorough job of wiping my memory clean. I couldn't remember a single thing, nor could I be bothered to try."As you said, that was in the past. I don't even know who you are, and I definitely don't love you now."At those words, her tears spilled over, flowing faster and faster, mixing with the alcohol as she kept downing bottle after bottle.I watched with indifference as she drank more and more, red hives spreading rapidly across her face.It wasn't until every last bottle stood empty that she seemed to snap out of it. Her eyes were bloodshot, brimming with a mix of grief and agony as she locked her gaze onto me."Even if I drink myself into the hospital, you still wouldn't feel a shred of pity for me, would you?" she asked, her voice dropping to a raspy whisper.I d

"We got married," Sierra said. "I walked away from my family business for you. You fought for my business, matching our rivals drink for drink at that dinner until you broke out in hives just to close the deal."I went through a brutal labor to give you Amelia. You swore we'd grow old together, and we even rescued a puppy named Teddy."We loved each other, Caleb. I've relived those memories every day and night for two years. You loved me to a fault, so you must be lying to me now, right?"Her face was pale. She kept rambling, desperately trying to jog my memory, her tone bordering on obsessive. But watching her sit there shaking and crying, I just couldn't make any sense of it."If what you're saying is true, then why did Amelia say you chose Mr. Cross?" I asked.Sierra stopped shaking. Her posture went rigid, and she stared at me with a look of guilt flitting through her eyes."M-my mother threatened me back then," she stammered. "I had no choice but to let him move in. But I'v

The girl turned a deaf ear to Stella's confrontation. Instead, she jumped up and down behind Stella, waving her hands frantically at me as she screamed at the top of her lungs, "Dad, I knew you weren't dead! You came back because you couldn't bear to leave me, right?"Stella held her ground, blocking the path to keep the other girl away from me.Flushed with anger and losing her patience, the girl lunged forward and gave Stella a violent shove."Who are you? Why won't you let me hug my dad?" she shrieked.Stella stumbled backward from the impact. I caught her before she could fall, pulling her safely behind my back.Across from us, the girl watched my protective reaction, her eyes welling with tears as she demanded, "Dad, how could you protect her? I'm your actual daughter!"My brows knitted together. She was such a weird kid. I had no idea who she was, yet she kept calling me her dad."Look, kid," I said. "Your real dad is going to be heartbroken if he catches you calling a

The system didn't send me back home right after I died. Instead, it left my spirit floating in the air, forcing me to watch the immediate aftermath of my death. It took only a few minutes for Joanne to bring Sierra and Amelia up to the bedroom.Sierra was still clad in her custom-tailored dress, but she abandoned every shred of her usual poise. She collapsed to her knees by the bed, her fingers trembling as she reached out and held her fingers beneath my nose to check for a breath. When she realized I was dead, she pulled my corpse into an embrace and began to sob uncontrollably."Honey! How could you leave me? You weren't lying to me, after all…"Amelia burst into tears, terrified. She dropped to her knees beside me, shaking my shoulders desperately as she screamed, "Dad, Joanne said you died, but I don't believe her. Wake up, please! I'm so scared…"The deafening chorus of their screams filled the room.My spirit began to drift away along with the final shards of my fading mem

My words seemed to strike a nerve, and Sierra's face drained of color as she avoided my gaze."But Teddy is gone," she argued. "Nothing is going to bring him back. Are you seriously going to hold a grudge and make Riley grovel over a pet?"She reached out, trying to take the small body from my arms. "We can adopt another one just like him. We can start fresh.""Forget it," I muttered, pulling away from her touch. "Teddy was one of a kind."I carried Teddy out to the backyard, walking over to the maple tree.It was his favorite spot to run around, so that was where I buried him.Sierra stood behind me, completely silent. Her heart dropped right then. A sudden look of panic flitted across her face, and she stared at me. She immediately pulled Joanne aside and told her to watch over me, terrified that I might leave.Later that evening, I sat under the maple tree to catch my breath while Joanne kept watch over me."Mr. Finch, even if you and Ms. Parker are in the midst of an argum
