Chapter 3

작가: A Fleeting Cloud
Sierra wrapped an arm around my shoulder. "Amelia is just a kid, honey. She doesn't know any better. Don't take it to heart."

The moment her skin brushed against mine, a blinding bolt of pain shot down my shoulder. My body spasmed, and I forced her arm off me, keeping my voice low.

"I get it."

When we arrived at Yearnerwood, we stepped out into the wilderness.

The park was famous for its raw, untouched terrain, meaning the ground was littered with fallen branches and jagged rocks, while leaves formed a canopy that blotted out the sky.

Worried about my balance, Sierra insisted on linking her arm through mine to anchor me as we walked.

Since I only had three days left anyway, I didn't fight her. I just let her lead the way.

All of a sudden, a series of sharp, frantic screams cut through the path ahead.

I looked toward the noise and spotted a tall, handsome man sprawled on the ground, surrounded by a cluster of hissing, aggressive king ratsnakes.

The second I heard that distinct voice, I knew it was Riley.

He was the widower of Sierra's late cousin—her cousin-in-law.

Hearing our footsteps, he whipped his head around.

The moment his eyes landed on Sierra, tears streamed down his face, and he let out a raspy cry for help. "Sierra! I'm terrified of snakes!"

Sierra froze in shock before sprinting toward Riley. She ripped herself away from me so violently that the sudden loss of momentum threw me off balance.

"Don't panic! I'm coming!" she yelled.

My body was incredibly frail, and because I had been leaning almost all my weight against her, the abrupt loss of support sent me crashing onto the ground.

A sharp branch tore a deep, jagged gash down my leg. Blood immediately began soaking through my jeans, and the gravel shredded the skin on my arm.

Cold sweat broke out across my forehead, the agonizing sting forcing a sharp groan from my throat.

By the time I managed to drag myself back up, Sierra had already rescued Riley.

"Those things were everywhere. I thought I'd get bitten and die out here without ever seeing you again..." Riley sobbed, his face completely white as he clung to Sierra.

He choked on his next breath, his eyes rolling back as he went totally limp right there in her arms.

Sierra's eyes reddened. Supporting most of his weight, she hauled him toward the car and climbed inside without casting a single glance back at me.

Amelia scrambled into the back seat right behind them, tears welling in her eyes. "Step on it! Get to the hospital now. Mr. Cross must've been bitten!"

The driver glanced at me, standing completely abandoned in the wilderness. "But what about—"

He didn't even get the question out before Sierra shut him down with a roar. "What are you waiting for? Keep sitting there, and you're fired! Get us to the hospital right now!"

The driver swallowed the rest of his question and looked away. He slammed his foot onto the gas pedal, and the car sped off, vanishing in a cloud of exhaust.

I stayed silent throughout the entire ordeal.

Sierra and Amelia didn't care enough to notice I was missing, let alone see the blood dripping from my leg. In the end, the driver was the only person who even remembered my existence.

I stared blankly at the fading taillights as a wave of pain washed over me, threatening to take me under.

I looked down and spotted two familiar emerald charms dangling from a low branch nearby.

They belonged to Sierra and Amelia.

Years ago, a brutal outbreak had swept through the city, and both Sierra and Amelia caught the virus.

Their conditions deteriorated so fast that they ended up in the ICU, their lives teetering on the brink of death with no treatment in sight.

Completely out of options, I took matters into my own hands and made a grueling, hundred-mile pilgrimage on foot to Redstone Hill.

I offered a desperate prayer to the heavens at every single mile marker just to secure those two emerald charms to protect them and turn their luck around.

Joanne eventually drove the snake away.Clutching the hem of my shirt in terror, Stella offered a tearful apology. "I'm sorry, Dad."Then, she quickly added, "You're amazing, Dad. You aren't scared of snakes."I gently wiped her tears away and smiled. "It's okay. You're my little girl, and it's my job to protect you. But it looks like we need to brush up on our nature facts. That snake wasn't venomous at all. Once we leave this place, I'll teach you how to identify all kinds of critters, okay?"Stella's eyes lit up, and she nodded vigorously. "Okay!"Amelia stood beside Sierra, her teeth chattering from the fright as she stared at me with a look of pure betrayal."D-Dad… why didn't you save me?"She was sobbing so hard that she hiccuped, and her words came out in jagged gasps.Seeing that I was done comforting Stella, Sierra took Amelia by the hand and walked over to me."Amelia is your flesh and blood," she murmured, her voice laced with sorrow. "Do you really have the hear

"You were so in love with me…"Sierra kept looking at me with hopeful eyes as she spoke, as if this act of self-destruction would somehow jog my memory. But she was bound to be disappointed. The system had done a thorough job of wiping my memory clean. I couldn't remember a single thing, nor could I be bothered to try."As you said, that was in the past. I don't even know who you are, and I definitely don't love you now."At those words, her tears spilled over, flowing faster and faster, mixing with the alcohol as she kept downing bottle after bottle.I watched with indifference as she drank more and more, red hives spreading rapidly across her face.It wasn't until every last bottle stood empty that she seemed to snap out of it. Her eyes were bloodshot, brimming with a mix of grief and agony as she locked her gaze onto me."Even if I drink myself into the hospital, you still wouldn't feel a shred of pity for me, would you?" she asked, her voice dropping to a raspy whisper.I d

"We got married," Sierra said. "I walked away from my family business for you. You fought for my business, matching our rivals drink for drink at that dinner until you broke out in hives just to close the deal."I went through a brutal labor to give you Amelia. You swore we'd grow old together, and we even rescued a puppy named Teddy."We loved each other, Caleb. I've relived those memories every day and night for two years. You loved me to a fault, so you must be lying to me now, right?"Her face was pale. She kept rambling, desperately trying to jog my memory, her tone bordering on obsessive. But watching her sit there shaking and crying, I just couldn't make any sense of it."If what you're saying is true, then why did Amelia say you chose Mr. Cross?" I asked.Sierra stopped shaking. Her posture went rigid, and she stared at me with a look of guilt flitting through her eyes."M-my mother threatened me back then," she stammered. "I had no choice but to let him move in. But I'v

The girl turned a deaf ear to Stella's confrontation. Instead, she jumped up and down behind Stella, waving her hands frantically at me as she screamed at the top of her lungs, "Dad, I knew you weren't dead! You came back because you couldn't bear to leave me, right?"Stella held her ground, blocking the path to keep the other girl away from me.Flushed with anger and losing her patience, the girl lunged forward and gave Stella a violent shove."Who are you? Why won't you let me hug my dad?" she shrieked.Stella stumbled backward from the impact. I caught her before she could fall, pulling her safely behind my back.Across from us, the girl watched my protective reaction, her eyes welling with tears as she demanded, "Dad, how could you protect her? I'm your actual daughter!"My brows knitted together. She was such a weird kid. I had no idea who she was, yet she kept calling me her dad."Look, kid," I said. "Your real dad is going to be heartbroken if he catches you calling a

The system didn't send me back home right after I died. Instead, it left my spirit floating in the air, forcing me to watch the immediate aftermath of my death. It took only a few minutes for Joanne to bring Sierra and Amelia up to the bedroom.Sierra was still clad in her custom-tailored dress, but she abandoned every shred of her usual poise. She collapsed to her knees by the bed, her fingers trembling as she reached out and held her fingers beneath my nose to check for a breath. When she realized I was dead, she pulled my corpse into an embrace and began to sob uncontrollably."Honey! How could you leave me? You weren't lying to me, after all…"Amelia burst into tears, terrified. She dropped to her knees beside me, shaking my shoulders desperately as she screamed, "Dad, Joanne said you died, but I don't believe her. Wake up, please! I'm so scared…"The deafening chorus of their screams filled the room.My spirit began to drift away along with the final shards of my fading mem

My words seemed to strike a nerve, and Sierra's face drained of color as she avoided my gaze."But Teddy is gone," she argued. "Nothing is going to bring him back. Are you seriously going to hold a grudge and make Riley grovel over a pet?"She reached out, trying to take the small body from my arms. "We can adopt another one just like him. We can start fresh.""Forget it," I muttered, pulling away from her touch. "Teddy was one of a kind."I carried Teddy out to the backyard, walking over to the maple tree.It was his favorite spot to run around, so that was where I buried him.Sierra stood behind me, completely silent. Her heart dropped right then. A sudden look of panic flitted across her face, and she stared at me. She immediately pulled Joanne aside and told her to watch over me, terrified that I might leave.Later that evening, I sat under the maple tree to catch my breath while Joanne kept watch over me."Mr. Finch, even if you and Ms. Parker are in the midst of an argum
