Chapter 1

After 20 minutes, the door to the master bedroom swung open. A young man stepped out wearing my silk shirt.

It was Mark Sutton, Simone Jamison's new lover. He was the young artist she was a patron of.

He stiffened for a moment when he spotted me, but then raised his chin and strutted around as if he were the real master of the house.

I nodded in greeting before reminding him, "Leave from the side entrance. There are reporters camped out in the front."

Mark bit his lip and glared at me before hurrying off.

At that moment, Simone came out of the bedroom, her bathrobe loosely tied around her waist. She glanced at our daughter, Ally Jamison, whom I was holding, before eyeing me with a smirk.

"You're being very well-behaved today."

I put the sleeping Ally to bed and pulled the covers over her.

Simone lit a cigarette and added, "Nothing would please me more than for you to remain this well-behaved from now on, Caleb."

Her face was blurred behind the smoke. I was abruptly reminded of a memory from four years ago, on a night just like this one.

Simone had stood outside my apartment building, completely drenched. She'd bought something from my favorite diner. Rainwater dripped from the ends of her hair as she called out, "I've spent the last three months trying to win you over, Dr. Rowland. Won't you give me a chance?"

Her gaze had been so bright, filled with a level of sincerity I would never see in her eyes again.

Simone's voice pulled me back to reality. "You haven't forgotten why we got married in the first place, right? I had too much to drink that night and forgot to take precautions. You were lucky. It only took one try for you to get me pregnant."

She walked over and lifted my jaw with her fingers.

"You also got lucky that my family cares a lot about its bloodline. Otherwise, do you think a mere doctor like you can ever marry someone like me?"

"I'm aware of that," I said, jerking my head away from her touch.

Simone's expression turned cold. She pulled her hand back and took another drag of her cigarette.

"Good. You'd better not forget that. As long as you do your part as my husband and raise our daughter well, I'll make it worth your while. But you need to understand one thing, Caleb—I will never devote myself to just one man."

"Understood." I lowered my eyes.

With a satisfied smile, Simone turned to leave before adding, "Oh, by the way, my parents are having their joint birthday celebration tomorrow. Wear that dark gray custom suit."

The door closed, and I stood in place for a long time. It was only when I felt my legs going numb that I slowly walked back to Ally's bed. She turned over, her little mouth puckered as though she were having a blissful dream.

There were a lot of things Simone was oblivious to. For one thing, I'd altered the results of the premarital medical examination we did. Since I was an attending physician at the hospital where we did the tests, I had the opportunity to do it.

Based on Simone's hormone levels and antral follicle count, the medical report had clearly stated that she had severely diminished egg viability and an extremely low chance of conceiving naturally.

I'd secretly deleted that section of the medical report.

Back then, I loved Simone so much that I couldn't bear to let her know there was something wrong with her. Later on, I learned from my mentor that my sperm had a rare level of motility and penetrative ability, making it possible for my sperm to counteract certain fertility issues.

If it hadn't been for me, Simone might very well have remained childless for the rest of her life.

Nevertheless, after her first trimester, she started spending more and more time away from home. She scorned me for having gained weight as a result of my anxiety while tending to her pregnancy.

The first time I caught the unfamiliar scent of cologne on her coat, I questioned her about it. Irritated, she shoved me away and snapped, "Do you have to make a huge fuss about every little thing, Caleb!"

Then she started coming home with hickeys on her neck. Before long, she brought the men back as well.

Instead of hanging up the painting, Ally put it into storage. Out of nowhere, she asked, "Dad, do you hate Mom?"My hand paused over my plate."I used to," I said honestly. "But not anymore.""Why not?""Because hating someone takes too much energy." I refilled Ally's water glass. "I have you, my career, and my freedom. I don't have the time to waste on hating someone irrelevant to me."Ally nodded as if she only half-understood me.We continued eating our dinner as the city lights outside the window slowly came on. The city was as bustling and unfeeling as ever, with the same joys and sorrows playing out in every corner. However, Ally and I had found our place in it.…When Ally was 25 years old, she officially took over management of Jamison Corporation. The family organized a grand celebration that was attended by all the prominent figures in Avoncrest.I sat in the front row, watching as Ally calmly delivered her speech onstage. "But that was a long time ago," I said to Simone before closing the door behind me, walking away from the once-proud woman who was now completely crushed.Simone and Mark's divorce was finalized in the blink of an eye. There was barely any division of property. The terms in their prenuptial agreement were iron-clad, ensuring that Mark would walk away with nothing. He tried to fight it, but the Jamisons made it clear to him that if he continued to cause trouble, they would make the explicit photos of him and his medical records public.Mark ended up vanishing from Avoncrest. It was like he never existed.Simone's symptoms kept recurring. The herpes had caused long-term damage to her immune system, and combined with the psychological blow, it left her completely broken. After she missed her third board meeting, Frank and Eunice came to see me. Mark's face went pale."A friend of mine happened to record this," I said as I pocketed my phone. "He overheard them at a private club three months ago. If you need more evidence, I can provide it."Eunice stumbled backward and had to be steadied by Frank. The look she gave Mark was filled with contempt and disgust."We'll get a divorce," Frank said at last, his voice hoarse and resolute. "We'll file it today.""Dad!" Mark cried out in alarm. "I—""What are you going to say?" I cut him off. "Do you want me to arrange an examination for you right now? Or are you going to claim that you can get Simone pregnant?"His mouth hung open, but no sound came out."You know better than anyone that it's impossible." I stepped closer and lowered my voice. "From the moment you first approached her, you knew it would be difficult for her to get pregnant, didn't you? That's why you didn't care that she continued to fool around with other people even after she married you."Mark's expression ga

"Sign this," I said to Simone. It was an equity transfer agreement to transfer 10% of Jamison Corporation's shares to me."Are you crazy?" Simone glared at the document, her voice rising. "You want me to give up shares in Jamison Corporation? That's a threat to our legacy!"I looked at her. "As it happens, the continuation of your family's legacy hinges on my daughter. You only have two options. Sign the agreement, and I'll use my position as a shareholder to secure Ally's future inheritance. Or you refuse, and you can watch as your extended family slowly but surely seize everything for themselves."Simone's fingers trembled, the carefully manicured nails tapping lightly against the desk."I'll give you three days to think it over." I pushed the agreement toward her. "By the way, I have a gift for you."I took another folder out of my desk drawer. It was stuffed with a ton of photos featuring Mark's bedroom adventures with both genders, the timeline spanning from two years ago to

Simone stared at the envelope for a moment before opening it up, though there was an almost imperceptible hesitation in the way she moved. She pulled out the report, her eyes quickly scanning the complicated data and charts before landing on the conclusion at the very bottom."Severe deficits detected, causing diminished egg viability. The probability of conception through fertilization with conventional sperm is extremely low, approaching zero."Her slender fingers tightened around the paper."What does this mean?" Simone looked at me in disbelief, a trace of panic in her eyes that she was desperately trying to suppress."Ally is…""Your biological daughter," I said calmly. "I was the one who removed that page from your premarital medical examination report."A heavy silence filled the consultation room. Sunlight came in through the blinds, casting alternating bands of light and shadow across her face.I watched as Simone swallowed hard. Even her carefully applied makeup could

"It'll be enough for now," I said quietly to Larry before looking out the window. "You know, Larry, sometimes you must be willing to give up everything to get what you truly desire."Larry tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "I just hope you won't regret this someday."I wouldn't. I'd taken with me the only biological heir the Jamisons would ever have.…Two years was enough time for a lot of things to change. Ally and I lived in a small apartment on the east side of the city. During the day, I took her to preschool and went to work at the hospital. At night, I cooked, played with her, and put her to bed.It was a modest life, but also a peaceful one.Simone and Mark got married just three months after the divorce.
