Chapter 416

Author: Light Breeze
Dexter remained seated in solitude within the restaurant for a considerable duration.

It was still drizzling persistently, showing no sign of letting up even as twilight deepened. Though the March rain had nourished the earth, it couldn't reach the aching silence within Dexter. His hand remained in constant motion, toying with "Leanore Dream," the ruby bracelet—with Eleanor in mind.

He was also uncertain as to the impetus behind his actions toward Eleanor. There must have been other reasons besides his concern for Maisie. He, in fact, had a nagging suspicion of what the reason was, but didn't want to acknowledge it. He didn't want to admit his jealousy. He was jealous of the fact that Eleanor had married Michael and was even having a child with him.

His eyes were bloodshot, and finally, in the twilight, he stood up, pushed open the glass door, and walked out. His imposing, dark silhouette slowly dissolved into the curtain of rain—like the final note of a sad song, as the two went th

Maisie was taking her medication on the second floor. She held the pills in her palm, refusing to take them. She looked at Eleanor pitifully.Sawyer carried Tina upstairs just then. When he saw what was happening, he put Tina down and said, "I'll get some candy."He soon returned with a packet of candy. He didn't usually eat these, but the girls in his class seemed to like this brand. They said the candy was sour and sweet, so he'd gotten two packets.Sawyer crouched before Maisie and held a candy to her lips, saying, "You can only have this after taking your medication."Her face crumpled, and she looked adorable. In the end, she took her medication with water before quickly biting the candy from Sawyer's fingers. The mixture of sour and sweet washed away the bitter taste in her mouth, and she looked at the rest of the candy. He rubbed her head. "I'll buy you five packets when you're all better."Now, however, she could only have one whenever she took her medication. She couldn'

  • Leaving You Bereft   Chapter 432

Feeling bitter, Jessica headed to a bar to drink away her sorrows. When night fell, the bar became loud and pulsating with energy. The air reeked of cheap perfume, and people were dressed in revealing clothing everywhere.Men and women clung to each other as they gyrated underneath the strobe lights. There was something cheap and sensually indulgent about the whole thing. That was exactly what Jessica wanted. She'd been wild and rebellious in her youth, only learning to restrain herself when growing older. Underneath the blazing club lights, she took off her coat, revealing her tank top and short skirt. She danced to the beat, twisting and gyrating sensually. She flipped her damp hair with every beat, subtly flirting with the man beside her. Each flip of her hair attracted his attention.Gradually, the man tentatively snaked an arm around her, his eyes blazing with desire. She didn't turn him down. They danced together, slowly learning the rhythm of each other's bodies and moving

Eleanor noticed Dexter's presence. Her voice was hoarse yet calm as she said, "You should go. Don't come anymore."He stopped one step away from her. He wanted to touch her shoulder, but that would be inappropriate. The hand he'd raised silently fell to his side, and his voice came out bitter and helpless. "Maisie will cry and fuss if she doesn't see me. She needs me."Eleanor's eyes reddened. "You're right that she'll ask for you and that she'll fuss without you. But that will pass, and she'll slowly forget about you. She'll also forget about the pain your wife put her in. You can't not know that the accident only happened because Jessica ran a red light, right?"The worst part is that she completely neglected Maisie at such a critical moment—she only cared about herself! How are you going to make up for that?"Her heart still twisted painfully when bringing up the accident. She couldn't accept this. She lowered her head and said, "I heard she lost the ability to have children whe

At dawn, the horizon glowed faintly with the soft glow of the rising sun. There were soft sounds in a well-equipped kitchen. After two hours of meticulous cooking, a bowl of piping hot porridge was prepared. It smelled appetizing and delicious. The part-time maid poured it into a flask. She smiled and said, "You can follow this recipe from now on, Mr. Ziegler. Patients need to eat light after surgery, so remember not to add too many things to the porridge."Dexter nodded. The porridge smelled good.He and Jessica had separated, and a divorce was inevitable. Now, he just wanted to make things up to Eleanor and Maisie. Even if Eleanor was married to Michael, he could still care for her and the children.…Dexter arrived at the hospital at 8:00 am. He was about to enter the VIP hospital ward when he heard a child crying. It was Maisie. "Mommy, it hurts. My stomach hurts. Why do I have a wound there?"Eleanor's voice rang out as she gently comforted Maisie. Dexter couldn't hear what

The bright lights in the bathroom made Dexter's reflection look even paler than usual. He turned on the faucet and allowed the water to run. Then, he caught some water in his cupped palms and splashed it on his face. He felt like a lifetime had passed when he looked at himself in the mirror.Maisie lay in the hospital, and Eleanor was pregnant with his child. However, she had another man by her side, caring for her.If only he'd held on longer when he was in Eboris. Would Maisie have never gotten into that accident? Could he still consider himself a man?Regret overwhelmed Dexter, and he continued splashing water on his face. Then, he wiped it with a towel. He blinked, having finally made up his mind.He was calm by the time he left the bathroom, and he headed to the walk-in wardrobe to change his clothes. Then, he grabbed a suitcase and packed a few outfits before zipping it up. After that, he turned to leave. The sound of hurried footsteps rang out. Jessica stood at the entrance

  • Leaving You Bereft   Chapter 428

Jessica returned from the police station in the afternoon. Her legs were weak as she got out of the car, and she found the villa to be silent when she went inside. She grabbed a maid and asked, "Where's Dexter? Is he at home?"The maid said, "Mr. Ziegler has gone to the hospital. He also asked us to prepare nutritional dishes that are good for pregnant women."Nutritional dishes? Pregnant women?Jessica felt like she'd been stabbed in the heart. She nodded and headed upstairs while supporting herself on the banister. She headed to the bathroom to take a bath.Even now, the smell of cigarette smoke lingered on her. The officer who'd interrogated her hadn't stopped smoking the whole time, and he'd had no regard for her well-being with his harsh questioning. Fortunately, her actions hadn't been illegal. She was back, and she was unscathed!Jessica even started humming. She knew Dexter was mad, so she decided to be more considerate and gentle. She would bring up the wedding again onc
