Chapter 448

Author: Light Breeze
The bread that Dexter made was truly awful. In the end, the cook had to prepare another set of dishes.

After dinner, Dexter didn't leave right away. Instead, he stayed and played two rounds of chess with Michael. Eleanor tried to dissuade them. After all, Michael wasn't in the best of health.

However, he waved her off, insisting on finishing two rounds.

The moon hung high in the sky. Michael didn't make it to the second round. After the first game, he leaned back against the sofa and fell asleep.

Layla tiptoed over and covered him with a light blanket. She turned to Dexter and whispered, "Since he's asleep, let's not wake him. He always coughs badly at night. It's better for him to sleep and suffer less."

The affection in her words was palpable. Dexter listened quietly, then picked up the chess pieces one by one.

As he stood up, it began pouring outside. The tree branches swayed wildly in the wind and rain, looking like they might snap off at any second.

Behind him, Michael's br

The Halls seemed to have finally accepted Dexter's presence in their home. Mostly because they couldn't drive him away, nor could they force him to leave. He had planted his roots firmly in the Hall residence. There were plenty of rumors circulating outside. But after all, Dexter had secured a billion-dollar deal for Ascent Group. Behind him stood the powerful Ziegler family.Julian Ziegler was known for his ruthless and cunning nature. Anyone who dared to sabotage Dexter would most certainly suffer the consequences at his hands.Within the elite circle of Brindley, no one dared to gossip recklessly. Still, there were some unclear things.Eleanor no longer tried to drive him away, but she rarely spoke to him, having almost no contact at all. She didn't hate him, but the entire relationship was absurd, making her feel helpless. Fortunately, Dexter hadn't taken an inch more than he was given and had always respected boundaries.Dexter managed two companies. Every day, he was busy

  • Leaving You Bereft   Chapter 456

Just as his fingers curled around the doorknob, he hesitated, filled with mixed emotions. Now, he was just a single man, while she was Michael's widow. Even though they were just separated by a door, it felt that they were separated by a vast distance, as well as the weight of public judgment. His hand slowly dropped to his sides. He stood quietly in the night sky for a long time before turning to leave. On the other side, Eleanor was leaning against the door. The moment she heard footsteps in the hallway, she knew it was Dexter, that he was standing outside, hesitating. She was relieved he hadn't knocked.Slowly, she walked back into the bedroom. Without Michael, the bedroom felt lonelier than usual. She sat on the bed alone, leaning against the headboard. Beneath the soft glow of the bedside lamp, she gently removed the ring from her finger and stared at the inscription on the inside.Michael had it engraved. It was his confession. He'd never told her in words, but the messa

At 8:00 pm, Dexter returned to the Hall residence. The villa was quiet, still shrouded in the lingering sorrow from the passing of its master. Even though the funeral decorations had been taken down, the solemn stillness lingered in the air, hard to dispel.Once the black Bentley came to a stop, a housekeeper spotted him and hesitantly called out, "Mr. Ziegler?"Dexter retrieved two suitcases from the trunk, looking much like he'd be settling in permanently. The housekeeper was dumbfounded. Was Dexter planning to live here long-term, claiming both Eleanor and the children? With a frown, Dexter said, "Take these to the guest room. The one I usually stay in."The housekeeper looked visibly relieved after hearing this.In the summer night, the breeze was gentle.Dexter looked around, then walked to a small swing set in the courtyard and sat down. It was the little girl's favorite spot. He rocked gently back and forth. A short while later, a chubby little figure came running over."

Dexter didn't return to the Hall residence right away. Instead, he took a shower first.Stripping off his shirt and trousers, his tall, muscular frame entered the shower. As he turned on the shower, the room was filled with mist, blurring his features. However, the sorrow in his eyes was still faintly visible.Michael was gone, and Eleanor was on her own now. He, too, was single. But he had no idea how to win Eleanor back. He didn't know how long it would take or what he needed to do. But he knew he couldn't give up.Ten minutes later, he reached out and shut off the water. He wiped the water off his face and began drying off his body. Midway through, he looked down at himself, stared for a few seconds, then chose to ignore it.Dexter got dressed just as the doorbell rang. He thought it was the cleaning lady, but when he opened the door, to his surprise, it was Julian.Julian was wearing a classic tuxedo, as if he'd just left some formal banquet. He was groomed to perfection, ca

By the time they arrived back at the Hall residence, dusk had already fallen. The car stopped, but Eleanor didn't get out immediately. She gazed at the deep blue sky outside and said softly, "Dexter, you should go. Don't come here anymore."Silence filled the car for a long time. Dexter turned his face away. A sliver of light outside accentuated his sharp features. He looked at her through the rearview mirror, and after a while, his voice came hoarse and low. "They need me here."It wasn't an exaggeration. The Becks were still eyeing the Halls' assets with greedy intent. More importantly, Eleanor was about to give birth. With Dexter around, no one would dare to act recklessly.Eleanor's voice came from the back seat. "It's inconvenient and inappropriate."Dexter's dark eyes locked onto the woman in the mirror, and her profile looked thin. She was about to give birth, yet she didn't show the slightest plumpness. It was clear that Michael's death had been a great blow to her. After

As dusk settled, Eleanor paid a visit to Tessa Villa. In August, the villa was bursting with blooming tessaria, bowing gracefully by the walls. From a distance, it resembled a sea of pink petals. The stretch of pink radiated such gentleness. It was nothing like Michael's style at all.The gardener working there saw Eleanor approaching. Perhaps he'd already received prior instructions from Michael and recognized her. He took off his gloves and greeted her politely, "Mrs. Hall, these were planted at Mr. Hall's request months ago. They're blooming beautifully now."The gardener knew that Michael had passed away, but Michael had instructed him that if his wife came, he should only speak of happy things, leaving matters related to life and death aside. He could even accompany her on a walk, showing her the garden full of tessaria.Eleanor reached out and touched a flower, her nose stinging. Her fingers trembled slightly as she brushed them across the flowers. It felt as though she wa
