Chapter 5

Author: Midnight Mouse
A muffled thunderclap rang out, as though it had struck Caleb's heart directly. The pain was so intense that he could barely breathe.

His eyes burned red with rage. "I'll fucking kill you!"

He lunged forward and sank his teeth into Jake's shoulder, biting down with enough force to tear off a chunk of flesh.

Everyone around them stared in shock at his sheer madness.

"Aunt Elena, help me!" Jake cried out in terror.

Elena finally snapped back to reality and ordered the others to pull Caleb away. When she saw the blood covering Jake's shoulder, concern flooded her eyes.

"You're fucking insane!" she shouted at Caleb, then helped Jake out of the cemetery.

Caleb stumbled backward and collapsed. His forehead struck a stone pillar, and blood trickled down his face to mingle with the ashes scattered across the ground.

Insane? It had been a long time since anyone had called him that.

Back then, he'd spoken his mind and exposed countless ugly truths, only to be branded a lunatic.

Only Elena had stood by him. She'd told him he was simply following his conscience, one of the few traces of light left in such a dark society.

Now, all that remained was the madness.

Caleb watched them disappear into the distance and curled his lips into a bitter smile. His heart ached as though it were bleeding.

The farce had finally come to a temporary end.

Everyone gradually left, but Caleb stayed behind.

He knelt numbly before the shattered pieces of the urn. Tears streamed down his face as he repeatedly knocked his forehead against the ground and apologized through his grief.

"I'm sorry, Dad.

"I'm sorry, Dad.

"I'm sorry, Dad."

...

Caleb felt useless. When he was young, he hadn't been able to protect his father. Now that he was grown, he still couldn't protect him.

Again and again, he knocked his forehead against the ground until it was bloody.

The cemetery staff eventually came over and drove him away, and he returned to the Coleman residence in a miserable state.

He didn't want to stay at the Coleman residence anymore. He never wanted to see Elena again.

He returned to his bedroom, packed his belongings, and prepared to leave. But just as he stepped out, Elena's dog came running toward him.

The dog was Elena's most precious possession.

No one in the entire household except Elena could get close to it. Caleb had spent three years meticulously caring for the dog before finally earning its trust, and he'd grown deeply attached to it as well.

"Knight, come here." Caleb crouched down, wanting to say goodbye.

Without warning, Knight charged at him and knocked him to the ground. Then the dog viciously sank its teeth into his shoulder.

"Ah!" Caleb screamed.

He instinctively tried to fight back, but Knight clamped down and refused to let go. The dog finally released him only after tearing away a chunk of flesh.

It hurt. The pain was excruciating.

He wanted to call for help, but his throat felt as though it were packed with shards of glass. He couldn't make a sound. He lay limp on the floor, his face deathly pale.

More than anything, he couldn't understand.

Why had Knight bitten him?

"Good boy, Knight!" Jake walked in at that moment and happily rubbed Knight's head. Only then did he glance down at Caleb. "Does it hurt? This is payback for what you did."

Jake smiled without the slightest trace of pity. He even pressed a finger into Caleb's mangled wound. Agony ripped through Caleb so violently that he nearly passed out.

Only then did Jake ask with satisfaction, "Do you know why he's called Knight?

"After my parents died, I became really insecure. Aunt Elena bought him for me and trained him to recognize me as his master. She even named him Knight so he'd stay by my side and protect me whenever she wasn't around.

"I heard you were the one taking care of him while I was gone these past three years. You even nearly got yourself killed by a car once when you tried to save him, didn't you?

"Heh. I thought he'd forget his old master once he had a new one. Looks like I was worried for nothing. All it takes is one command from me, and he'll still bite you without mercy.

"People or dogs, they're all mine. What could a pathetic loser like you possibly have to compete with me?"

Caleb had never known any of this. He hadn't known that Knight had always belonged to Jake, that Elena cherished the dog so much because she loved Jake too, or that Knight had become an outlet for the feelings she couldn't express directly.

And yet Caleb had foolishly given them everything he had, believing he'd finally become part of this family.

But in truth, he was nothing.

Just as Jake had said, whether it was the people or the dog, none of them had ever truly been his.

Caleb laughed as tears spilled uncontrollably from his eyes. In the end, he coughed up a mouthful of blood, and his heavy eyelids slowly closed once more.

At the hospital, Elena was rushed into surgery. No one knew how dangerous those hours had been inside the operating room. Nor did anyone know that as Elena lay unconscious, she had fallen into a dream so vivid that it felt completely real. And every moment of it revolved around Caleb. She remembered the first time they met. He had splashed coffee all over her face, and his words had been sharp and distant. Yet beneath the coldness in his eyes, she'd glimpsed wariness and vulnerability. For some reason, she hadn't been angry with him at all. Instead, she'd asked him to marry her.Over the three years of their marriage, they had gradually come to know and understand each other. There had been no grand d

The officer paused before continuing and gave Caleb the final outcome as plainly as he could. "Jake Lawson has been diagnosed with a severe mental disorder and was deemed to have been experiencing an episode when he committed the crimes."Under the law, he is not criminally responsible for his actions. After extensive review and evaluation, the only option was to release him without a conviction."The result was absurd and cold, almost too cruel to accept.Caleb tightened his grip on his phone as fury burst from his throat. "Why? Why can a murderer be released without punishment?!"Keith had died without ever finding peace. Caleb had endured years of pain and humiliation. Alex had lost his life for nothing. And yet, because of a single psychiatric evaluation, Jake had escaped every consequence.Caleb couldn't accept it. How could he possibly accept it?!But no matter how unwilling he was to let it go, there was nothing the police could do."We're required to handle the case acc

"Don't be afraid. It's me." Elena's voice was hoarse, heavy with an apology that had come far too late. "Caleb, I came to pay my respects to Alex. I wanted to light a candle for him."Caleb instantly became fully alert. He didn't turn to look at her.His eyes remained fixed on Alex's portrait. "You don't need to. I think I made myself clear enough. We're strangers now. And as for Alex, what right do you have to come here and pay your respects when you're the one who caused his death?"Elena could no longer hold herself back. She immediately crouched in front of him, her eyes filled with regret and remorse. "It's not what you think."She didn't make excuses or try to shift the blame.Instead, she told him the truth. "I never intended to hurt Alex. Jake went behind my back and ordered his men to do it. Of course, I can't completely wash my hands of what happened. But I want you to know that I never meant for any of this to happen."And I never protected Jake because I loved him. Hi

The moment Elena saw the divorce decree, her whole body began to shake. She had barely recovered from the truth that had just come to light when another wave of panic swept over her.Caleb had come prepared. Before she could even apologize, he had already severed the only bond that still tied them together."When did you do this?" Her voice was hoarse and dry, trembling with disbelief and panic. She staggered forward and took the divorce decree from him with a shaking hand."The day Jake came back to the country," Caleb replied softly. His cold eyes now held nothing but distance, as though she were a stranger. "Elena, we're over. I've never been able to tolerate even the slightest flaw."From the moment I found out you married me with an ulterior motive, there was no way we could stay together."As of today, our marriage is over. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other."His words were gentle, yet each one cut like a blade, severing every bond forged over the years th

The OLED screen suddenly lit up, drawing everyone's attention. The first image to appear was high-definition security footage from a camera positioned directly across from the graves of Jake's parents. In the footage, Jake arrived at the gravesite alone. He took out the blood and paint he'd prepared beforehand, then deftly scrawled two lines across the gravestone. His expression was vicious and obsessive, without a trace of grief. He even spoke to the gravestone as though his parents could hear him. "You can't blame me. You're the ones who left me alone in this world. I only have Aunt Elena now."As my parents, you should be helping me. As long as I get Caleb out of the way, Elena will belong to me alone!"The footage completely disproved the accusation that Caleb had deliberately desecrated the Lawsons' graves. Then a second video appeared. It was footage from the day of the trial, when Caleb had received a video showing that his lawyer and best friend had been kidnapped.Insid

As soon as Caleb finished speaking, another wave of heated discussion swept through the venue. The media went wild. Cameras clicked nonstop as journalists scrambled to capture the best angles."This is unbelievable! The Coleman heiress fell in love with her own adopted nephew, then married another man to cover it up and even had someone killed!""Well, this just got interesting. After everything Elena has done, can she still take over the family and become the next head of the Coleman Group?""Get this on camera! This story is worth a fortune. It's definitely making tomorrow's headlines!"Faced with everyone's accusations and speculation, Elena didn't care in the slightest.Something else had shocked her: Caleb already knew. She'd kept this secret for so long. She had intended to tell him the truth about their complicated relationship after today, yet somehow, he'd found out anyway. Even though the truth wasn't what he thought. And had his friend really died? But how?!She had
