Chapter 6

Author: Midnight Mouse
Caleb woke up in the hospital.

The moment he opened his eyes, he saw Elena sitting beside his bed. She looked utterly exhausted, as though she hadn't slept a wink all night.

"You're finally awake. You were unconscious all night. You scared me half to death! Are you feeling okay? Can you hear me clearly?" Elena's voice was hoarse.

One hand remained tightly clasped around his, and the unmistakable concern in her eyes left Caleb dazed for a moment.

He almost believed her concern was genuine.

He opened his mouth, ready to tell her how badly he'd been wronged and ask her to seek justice for him.

Before he could speak, Elena said, "Jake is being attacked online. We need you to make a statement and clear things up."

The words died in Caleb's throat.

At first, he didn't understand. Then Elena showed him the video on her phone, and everything became clear.

Jake had livestreamed Caleb being mauled by the dog yesterday. Worse, he'd seemed to enjoy watching it and had openly flaunted his cruelty.

The video had gone viral overnight and shot straight to the top of the trending charts.

People were calling Jake cruel and saying he had no business owning a dog. Some had even reported him to the police.

'So... Elena wasn't worried about me at all. She's desperate to help Jake escape the consequences,' Caleb thought bitterly.

Jake had brought all of this on himself, yet she wanted the victim to come forward and clear his name?

It was beyond ridiculous.

"What do you want me to say?" Mockery filled Caleb's eyes, and his already pale face turned even whiter.

Elena didn't notice. She assumed he'd agreed and replied without the slightest hesitation, "Just say you attacked him first, so Knight was only protecting his owner when he bit you.

"Then say you secretly used Jake's account to livestream it and deliberately edited the footage out of context to gain sympathy."

Caleb's heart sank to rock bottom.

No matter how arrogant Jake was or how blatantly he hurt Caleb, Elena could always find a thousand excuses to defend him and let him off the hook. It didn't matter if Caleb was covered in wounds or if disappointment had utterly crushed him.

Caleb calmly pulled his hand away. Under Elena's expectant gaze, he picked up his phone. Instead of logging into his social media account, he called his friend.

"Alex, help me sue Jake Lawson. I want to press charges for assault—"

Before he could finish, Elena snatched the phone from his hand and hung up.

"What are you doing?!" She shot to her feet, and every trace of concern vanished from her eyes. "Jake can be a little reckless, but can't you be more forgiving as his elder?"

Caleb smiled mockingly. "What kind of elder am I? Am I the puppet husband you used to fight for power and clear the way for him? Or the pathetic uncle-in-law who knew you two had something going on but was supposed to pretend he knew nothing?"

Elena's face darkened with fury. "You're talking complete nonsense! After everything that's happened, you're still jealous and picking a fight over nothing.

"You weren't like this before. Now I barely recognize you. Just tell me what it'll take for you to help Jake clear his name."

To Caleb, her anger only looked like guilt.

He let out a cold laugh. Not the slightest trace of hesitation remained in his heart.

"Absolutely not!"

The atmosphere in the room instantly froze.

They remained locked in a stalemate until Jake called Elena. She listened to him for a moment, then hurried out of the hospital room.

…

Over the next few days, Elena didn't visit him even once.

Caleb neither grieved nor grew angry. He simply focused on his recovery while gathering evidence and pursuing legal action.

This time, he was going to get justice.

On the day of his discharge, he went straight to the courthouse.

But when he tried to contact Alex, the lawyer who had been helping him with the case, he couldn't reach him.

Instead, Caleb received a video. In it, Alex hung suspended in midair, his mouth sewn shut with fishing line. He could only whimper as blood continued to seep from the wounds.

At the hospital, Elena was rushed into surgery. The red light outside the operating room flickered on, sealing off the world within from everything beyond its doors.Caleb stood in the hallway, traces of blood still staining his fingertips. His entire body felt cold, and his mind refused to settle. The surgery lasted six hours. No one knew how dangerous those hours had been inside the operating room. Nor did anyone know that as Elena lay unconscious, she had fallen into a dream so vivid that it felt completely real. And every moment of it revolved around Caleb. She remembered the first time they met. He had splashed coffee all over her face, and his words had been sharp and distant. Yet beneath the coldness in his eyes, she'd glimpsed wariness and vulnerability. For some reason, she hadn't been angry with him at all. Instead, she'd asked him to marry her.Over the three years of their marriage, they had gradually come to know and understand each other. There had been no grand d

The officer paused before continuing and gave Caleb the final outcome as plainly as he could. "Jake Lawson has been diagnosed with a severe mental disorder and was deemed to have been experiencing an episode when he committed the crimes."Under the law, he is not criminally responsible for his actions. After extensive review and evaluation, the only option was to release him without a conviction."The result was absurd and cold, almost too cruel to accept.Caleb tightened his grip on his phone as fury burst from his throat. "Why? Why can a murderer be released without punishment?!"Keith had died without ever finding peace. Caleb had endured years of pain and humiliation. Alex had lost his life for nothing. And yet, because of a single psychiatric evaluation, Jake had escaped every consequence.Caleb couldn't accept it. How could he possibly accept it?!But no matter how unwilling he was to let it go, there was nothing the police could do."We're required to handle the case acc

"Don't be afraid. It's me." Elena's voice was hoarse, heavy with an apology that had come far too late. "Caleb, I came to pay my respects to Alex. I wanted to light a candle for him."Caleb instantly became fully alert. He didn't turn to look at her.His eyes remained fixed on Alex's portrait. "You don't need to. I think I made myself clear enough. We're strangers now. And as for Alex, what right do you have to come here and pay your respects when you're the one who caused his death?"Elena could no longer hold herself back. She immediately crouched in front of him, her eyes filled with regret and remorse. "It's not what you think."She didn't make excuses or try to shift the blame.Instead, she told him the truth. "I never intended to hurt Alex. Jake went behind my back and ordered his men to do it. Of course, I can't completely wash my hands of what happened. But I want you to know that I never meant for any of this to happen."And I never protected Jake because I loved him. Hi

The moment Elena saw the divorce decree, her whole body began to shake. She had barely recovered from the truth that had just come to light when another wave of panic swept over her.Caleb had come prepared. Before she could even apologize, he had already severed the only bond that still tied them together."When did you do this?" Her voice was hoarse and dry, trembling with disbelief and panic. She staggered forward and took the divorce decree from him with a shaking hand."The day Jake came back to the country," Caleb replied softly. His cold eyes now held nothing but distance, as though she were a stranger. "Elena, we're over. I've never been able to tolerate even the slightest flaw."From the moment I found out you married me with an ulterior motive, there was no way we could stay together."As of today, our marriage is over. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other."His words were gentle, yet each one cut like a blade, severing every bond forged over the years th

The OLED screen suddenly lit up, drawing everyone's attention. The first image to appear was high-definition security footage from a camera positioned directly across from the graves of Jake's parents. In the footage, Jake arrived at the gravesite alone. He took out the blood and paint he'd prepared beforehand, then deftly scrawled two lines across the gravestone. His expression was vicious and obsessive, without a trace of grief. He even spoke to the gravestone as though his parents could hear him. "You can't blame me. You're the ones who left me alone in this world. I only have Aunt Elena now."As my parents, you should be helping me. As long as I get Caleb out of the way, Elena will belong to me alone!"The footage completely disproved the accusation that Caleb had deliberately desecrated the Lawsons' graves. Then a second video appeared. It was footage from the day of the trial, when Caleb had received a video showing that his lawyer and best friend had been kidnapped.Insid

As soon as Caleb finished speaking, another wave of heated discussion swept through the venue. The media went wild. Cameras clicked nonstop as journalists scrambled to capture the best angles."This is unbelievable! The Coleman heiress fell in love with her own adopted nephew, then married another man to cover it up and even had someone killed!""Well, this just got interesting. After everything Elena has done, can she still take over the family and become the next head of the Coleman Group?""Get this on camera! This story is worth a fortune. It's definitely making tomorrow's headlines!"Faced with everyone's accusations and speculation, Elena didn't care in the slightest.Something else had shocked her: Caleb already knew. She'd kept this secret for so long. She had intended to tell him the truth about their complicated relationship after today, yet somehow, he'd found out anyway. Even though the truth wasn't what he thought. And had his friend really died? But how?!She had
