LOGINLet Them Watch
Three days after I signed Ethans contract I moved out of Davens apartment. Chloe helped me pack like she said she would. We did it fast. Didn't talk much. I packed two bags of clothes, a box of books and a few things from the kitchen that were mine before he moved in. I left the rest. I didn't want anything that he had touched. My Aunt Rita's spare room became mine. It was small. The bed was too soft and the walls were thin.. It was all mine. Ethan's team had been in touch with me ever since. Claire sent me instructions, schedules and things I needed to know before my official appearance with Ethan. I read everything carefully. Said very little. I was good at being quiet and doing exactly what I was told. I have been doing it my whole life. On Thursday morning Claire called. "There is dinner tonight. Mr Voss needs you to be there by seven. A car will come at six thirty." "Tonight?" I said. "That is. I don't have anything to wear to a dinner like that." There was a pause. "Check your door " Claire. Hung up. I opened the door of Aunt Rita's flat. There was a garment bag hanging on the handle.. Beside it is a small box. I unzipped the bag slowly. A dress. Dark green is simply perfectly fitted. I didn't want to think about how someone had gotten my measurements. Aunt Rita appeared behind me. "Who sent that?" She asked. "Someone who likes to be prepared, " I said. She gave me a look and went back to her tea smiling. The car came at six thirty exactly. The driver didn't speak. I sat in the back in the dress with my hands folded in my lap and told myself I was fine. The dinner was at a hotel in the city centre. The kind of place where everything was too quiet and too expensive and everyone in the room knew who everyone else was. The driver opened my door. I stepped out. Ethan was already outside waiting. He looked at me once quickly like he was checking that everything was in order. Then he held out his arm. "Stay close, " he said quietly. "Smile when people look. You don't have to say much." "I know how to be invisible, " I said. Something moved across his face. He looked at me for a second longer than necessary. "That is not what I need tonight, " he said. We walked in together. The room was full. Voices, movement, the clink of glasses. People noticed Ethan away. They always did. And then their eyes moved to me. I kept my shoulders back. My face was calm and I stayed at his side and I didn't look at the floor once. It was the thing I had done since walking back into that wedding venue. We were forty minutes in when I felt it. That feeling on the back of your neck when someone is staring at you. I turned slowly. There he was. Daven. Standing near the entrance with a drink in his hand completely still staring at me. Beside him was Elena. Her eyes found me at the moment.. Unlike Daven, whose face had gone blank Elenas face changed. Her jaw tightened. Her smile disappeared. She looked at the dress at Ethan beside me at the way Ethans hand had moved to the small of my back without either of us noticing. I turned back to the conversation in front of me. My heart was going fast. I kept my face still. "You know someone, " Ethan said quietly beside me. Not a question. Yes, I answered. "My ex fiancé, " I said. ". My former best friend." A pause. "Together?" "Together." Another pause. Then Ethan did something I didn't expect. He turned slightly toward me. Said quietly: "Then let them watch." I didn't look back at Daven for the rest of the evening. I felt his eyes on me the entire time. When the dinner ended and we stepped back outside Ethan walked me to the car. He opened the door himself. Just before I got in he stopped. "You did well tonight, " he said. I looked at him. "You sound surprised." "I am " he said simply.. Walked away. I got into the car. My phone buzzed before we had even left the car park. Daven. "We need to talk. Tonight. It is Sofia. Please." I read the message. Then another one came through. This time from a number I didn't recognise. Different from the number that had been contacting me before. A new one. "Do not meet Daven alone. He knows you have been talking to Voss.. Sofia. He is not the one you should be afraid of right now." I stared at the screen. Two messages. Two different people. Both, about Daven. A warning that the person I should actually be afraid of was still out there. The car pulled out into the street. I looked out the window at the city moving Someone was watching everything. They were getting closer. The SecretI got home shaken.I couldn’t sleep that night. I was staring at the ceiling with two messages still open on my phone screen. One was from Daven. The other was from an unknown number. The message from the number said: Do not meet Daven alone. He is not the one you should be afraid of now. I read these words over and over until they did not make sense anymore.I was wondering who was sending these messages. First it was one number, now another. Someone who knew about Ethan, someone who knew about the dinner that night. Someone who had been close enough to watch everything and was still hiding.I typed a message back to the number. I asked: Who are you?I waited for three minutes. Then I got a response: Someone who made the mistake of trusting the person too. We will talk soon, Not yet. Stay close to Voss.. Sofia do not tell Ethan about these messages.I put my phone face down on the bed. I was supposed to tell Ethan everything. Now I had a secret from him. I had signed a co

The DealClaire took me to the floor and knocked on the double doors. Then she stepped aside. I walked in by myself. The man behind the desk did not look up away. He was reading something with one hand on the desk completely still. When he finally looked up his eyes went straight to my face. Stayed there. He did not smile. He did not stand up."Sit down Ms Wren."I sat down.Close he was harder to figure out than I thought. Not cold, exactly. More like a man who had decided a time ago that showing what he was thinking was a waste of time."I am sorry about your wedding " he said. Then he said, "I will not waste your time. You already know about the document. What you do not know yet is how far this goes."He turned a folder around. Pushed it across the desk.It was bank records. Eighteen months of money transfers. Money was moving between accounts. I saw Davens name on the one. Elenas name was on the second. Then I saw the name.My hand stopped moving on the page.It was someone I had
The Stranger With AnswersI barely slept.I spent the night at Aunt Ritas place on her couch because I could not go back to my apartment. I knew Elena would probably be there by morning moving her things in and making herself at home in the life I had built over the three years.Aunt Rita did not ask me questions. She just looked at me standing at her door with a bag of clothes I had grabbed from Chloes car. She just opened the door wider. Said come in. I loved her for that.I could not sleep. Thought about the message I got. About the papers. About my signature on a document I had never seen before.By eight thirty I was already outside the coffee shop on Birch Street. I almost did not go in. I stood outside for a minute telling myself this was a bad idea. I thought about all the surprises I had in the twenty four hours and I did not need any more. Then I thought about Elenas voice. I remembered what she said: “By the time she figures it out it will be too late”. That made me go insi
The Walk BackI stood in that hallway for what felt like an eternity. All I know is that at some point my legs started moving. Back down the stairs. Back into the cab. Back to the venue. The driver looked at me in the mirror a couple of times. He did not say a word. I was still wearing my wedding dress. I must have looked pretty ridiculous. I stared out the window. Kept thinking about what Daven and Elena had said. She won't be a problem they said. She never is.Does she know she already signed the papers I wondered. Not yet they said. And by the time she figures it out it will be too late.I pressed my hand against my stomach. Told myself to breathe. One thing at a time. First I had to get through this day. Then I could worry about everythingWhen the cab stopped outside the venue I sat there for a moment. I could see people still inside waiting and hoping that something would happen. Some of them had come from cities for this wedding. Some of them had taken time off work.I got out
The MessageMy wedding was supposed to start in forty minutes. My fiancé just sent me a text.Sofia. I'm so sorry. I can't do this.I read the text three times. Then I sat down on the chair behind me because my legs stopped working.More than two hundred people were seated in the hall waiting. I could hear them through the wall the low hum of conversation someone laughing, chairs scraping the floor. My mother was down the corridor. The music had already started playing. Everything was ready. The flowers were in my hands the dress was on. The man I was supposed to walk toward in forty minutes had just sent me five words.I kept staring at the screen. Waiting for another message. A sorry I was joking. A call. Something. Nothing came. Then my phone buzzed. A call from Elena.I picked up."Sofi! I am so sorry traffic is terrible here. I will be there in twenty minutes okay? Don't stress. How are you feeling? Are you nervous?" Don’t worry you’ll be fine, I’ll always be here for you.Her vo
