"Sure," the person on the other end replied without hesitation.

I carefully asked, "Could you help me get two tickets for the Noah Ark's Car? I want to leave with my mom in the first group."

These tickets were almost impossible to get. The person couldn't make any promises.

"I'll do everything I can," they said.

Just after I hung up, Sophia Coleman pushed open the door. Her eyes landed on my phone screen.

"Who were you calling?"

I had no desire to lie to her. I answered tiredly, "I'm trying to get someone to find me two tickets."

"There are only a few hundred tickets for the first group going to the base," Sophia said casually without even looking at me. "So you won't be able to get any. Otherwise, I would have found a way for you already."

I tightened my grip on my phone.

Of course she knew how hard it was to get a ticket. Yet she had still chosen to leave me behind and take the graduate student working under her with her.

When I didn't answer, she finally looked up. "Ethan, don't worry. I've already applied for a spot for you in the second group. You'll definitely survive."

The radio was reporting that the temperature was still climbing. I let out a cold laugh in my heart.

Everyone knew that in this extreme-heat apocalypse, every day you waited to leave lowered your chances of survival.

The end of the world was coming. Maybe I was just too anxious, but I still held on to a tiny bit of hope. "Sophia, could you take my mom with you first? You know she supported you for six years. She's old and in poor health. I'm afraid she won't last much longer."

The room fell silent.

The lights were off, so I couldn't see the expression on Sophia's face.

Sophia and I had been married for seven years. But we had known each other much longer than that.

We grew up in the same neighborhood and had been childhood friends. We used to play together all the time.

But during the summer before Sophia started middle school, her parents, Ryan Carson and Lila Carson, died in a tragic car accident.

My mom, Sienna Coleman, felt sorry for her because she had no one left. So she took Sophia in. Back then, supplies were already in short supply, but my mom still managed to raise two college graduates.

Sophia had always been shy. After she took her SAT, she promised me that even if the world ended someday, she would stay with me.

That summer was nowhere near as hot as it was now. But her palm had been warm as she held my hand. It had been enough to make my whole heart burn.

I squeezed my eyes shut, and the memory slowly faded.

After a long silence, Sophia finally spoke, "Ethan, Charles is my most trusted assistant. I have to take him with me. And you shouldn't take those silly promises we made as kids seriously."

I gave a bitter smile and almost lost my balance.

The world was clearly on the verge of an extreme-heat apocalypse. Yet every word she said made me feel colder.

The clouds soon cleared. Moonlight fell across her distant, cold face.

Sophia tapped a file folder against my chest. "Take this for now."

I opened it.

Inside was a divorce agreement.

I looked at her with mixed feelings. As the person she had betrayed, part of me wanted to tell her that she deserved everything that happened to her.But she had also been badly injured while working on research to save humanity from the apocalypse.Out of basic compassion, I finally nodded at her. "It's been a long time. I finished the experiment you couldn't complete."70 percent of Sophia's body had been burned. Thankfully, the burns hadn't reached her head, so she could still talk to me.She pressed her pale lips together and gave a sad smile. "You're still as talented as you were back then. By the way, I'm being sent back to the mainland in a few days."I tilted my head slightly. "Then I wish you good luck."Sophia's eyes turned red. "Even if the world ends, I'll keep waiting for you to come back."Hearing that same false promise again after all these years only made me feel bitter.I laughed. "Don't take those silly promises we made as kids seriously."Sophia's face suddenly turn

After countless discussions, we finally discovered the cause of the extreme-heat apocalypse. It was caused by a sudden change in solar activity, which triggered a superflare. The flare made the sun's brightness reach 20 times its normal level for a short period."How long will this situation last?""Based on our initial observations, the effects of the superflare will last for about two years."Everyone in the room looked serious after hearing that.Frostpoint Base could only hold 10,000 people. That meant there was nowhere for the billions of people around the world to go.Our top priority was to develop heat-resistant film or build underground cities that could protect people from the sun's extreme changes for the next two years.Sophia specialized in astrophysics. She volunteered immediately. "Ms. Larson, let me lead the project. I have studied this field extensively."Jennifer was fair and professional, so she happily agreed.Sophia then picked several researchers, including Charle

Jennifer stood at the entrance of the base with a gun in her hand.It had been a long time since we last saw each other. She looked more mature than she did back then. She wiped the barrel of her gun and said coldly, "They're my family members. Does anyone have a problem with that?"The crowd fell silent. But soon, someone tried to flatter her. "Frostpoint Base was built under the Larson family's leadership. Of course, Ms. Larson can bring two family members!""Exactly! Who was the idiot who dared to criticize Ms. Larson's family members just now? That was completely out of line!"Sophia's face looked terrible. She quickly pushed her way through the crowd. "Jennifer, when did my husband become one of your family members?"I immediately made it clear that we were no longer connected. "Sophia, don't forget. We're already divorced."Someone nearby let out a quiet laugh. Jennifer raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Husband? Isn't your husband the graduate student standing next to you?"Her words shocke

Sophia heard Jennifer Larson's name again after so many years. It was a name that had always made her jealous. For the first time in years, Sophia lost her usual calm. She demanded, "Ethan, you owe me an explanation! Why are you still in contact with her?"I opened the car door and coldly replied, "I just want to survive. Even if you refuse to help me, someone else will."I ignored Sophia's hysterical shouting and got into the car. Then I drove away.Sienna looked at me nervously. "Ethan, aren't Sophia and that young man coming with us?""Mom, don't worry. They'll take the next car. This one is for us."Sienna was silent for a moment. Then she worriedly patted my back. "Ethan, did you and Sophia have a fight? Don't be sad. I'm here for you..."I bit my lip. The tears I had been holding back for so long finally fell.Three days later, the Noah's Ark Car finally arrived at Frostpoint Base. The extreme heat hadn't reached this place yet. It was the last safe place left on Earth.Sophia an

Sophia frowned. "Ethan, what are you smiling about? Are you deliberately forcing me to take your mother with us?"I opened my suitcase without even looking at her. "Don't worry. My mom and I won't take either of your two spots on the Noah's Ark Car."After saying that, I kept tossing my belongings into the suitcase. I also took all the little keepsakes from our cabinets and threw them into the trash.Once the apocalypse came, they were all nothing but garbage. Even the memories of our love meant nothing anymore.Sophia picked up a small stuffed toy from the trash. It was a gift we had bought to celebrate our third wedding anniversary. Her face darkened immediately.I didn't want to say anything else to her, so I carried my things straight to the guest room where Sienna was staying.Over the next three days, supplies really did become scarce. Each person was given only one cup of water with every meal. But on the night before we were supposed to leave, I got up in the middle of the nigh

I finally breathed a sigh of relief. But that bedroom door never opened again that night.Sophia stayed in the living room and talked with Charles all night about the extreme-heat apocalypse.I could already imagine what excuse she would use if I went out there.Academic research? A professor-student discussion?I had heard those excuses too many times. I was sick of them.I was so disappointed that I no longer wanted to open that door. The extreme heat was already hard enough to endure. Getting angry would only make things worse.I needed to save my energy so I could get Sienna and myself out of there.Besides, in a situation like this, love and marriage seemed far less important. After thinking it over, I went to sleep. But to my surprise, Charles didn't leave the next morning.Instead, he openly sat at the dining table and ate breakfast from one of my plates. When he saw me come out, he politely greeted me, "Hello, Mr. Coleman. My AC broke down, so I came over early this morning. I'
