Chapter 3: Trapped in a Public Scandal

The moment Gabriel dropped me off, I made a promise to myself. I was done crying and replaying everything in my head. Done asking myself why and when and how it all went wrong. Evan made his choice and I was going to make mine. Starting tonight, I was moving forward whether my heart agreed or not.

Gabriel made sure there were no reporters waiting outside before he let me out of the car. He even walked me all the way up to my apartment door, which I didn't ask him to do but I didn't argue with either. Maybe it really feel like I'm going to break down if I'm alone right now. Before he left, he stopped at the doorway and looked at me.

"Call me if anything happens," he said.

I nodded and watched him leave. And for the first time since I walked out of that church, everything felt a little less suffocating.

I went straight to the shower and stood under the water for a long time, not because I thought it would fix anything but because I needed to wash the whole day off my mind. The dress, the flowers, the church, the way the music sounded different the moment those doors opened for me, and the look on Evan's face when he saw me standing alone in the middle of the aisle like I had no idea what was waiting for me. I wanted every single detail that was still replaying in my head without my permission to just disappear. He didn't deserve that much space in me anymore and I was done giving it to him.

By the time I stepped out, I had already decided. I was not going to fall apart again over someone who didn't even fight for me. I was going to get up, fix myself, and climb so high that looking back down at this moment would make him feel regret.

My phone was flooded with messages the moment I turned it back on. Mom and Dad had been trying to reach me for hours.

"I'm sorry, my daughter. I'm on my way now." — Mom

"Be strong, Yanna. I love you." — Dad

I stared at their messages for a second before the tears came back without warning. I didn't want to cry anymore but those two messages broke something open in me that I hadn't managed to close yet. I replied quickly and told them I was okay, that I'd wait for them, and that they didn't need to worry.

They couldn't make it to the wedding because their flight got rescheduled. But I'm very glad that they didn't have to watch it happen to me.

When they finally arrived and I opened the door, I didn't even get to say a single word because I was already crying in my mother's arms. Dad had his arms around both of us a second later. We stood in the doorway like that for a while, none of us saying anything because there wasn't much to say. And I know that they know what I'm feeling right now. I guess everyone knew.

I told them everything anyway. And when I was done talking, I felt lighter. Like saying it out loud had taken some of the weight off my chest.

The next two days passed quietly inside the apartment. I kept the curtains closed and my phone mostly off. I focused on work, on small tasks, on anything that kept my mind busy and away from Evan. Every time a memory of him comes back, I immediately push it out. I wasn't interested anymore. I had already decided that and I was sticking to it until the very end.

By the third morning, I noticed that I ran out of food, which forced me to go outside whether I was ready or not. I put on a cap, a mask, and an oversized hoodie before heading out. It wasn't the most convincing disguise but it was the best I had… maybe. And I was so stupid to think it would work.

People recognized me the moment I stepped onto the street. I could hear them whispering as I passed, nudging each other and reaching for their phones. And inside the grocery store, the cashier stared at my face for too long before looking back down at her screen. I kept my head straight and told myself it didn't matter. I grabbed what I needed and made my way back out.

That was when everything went so wrong. The moment I stepped outside, two vans came out of nowhere and reporters flooded the sidewalk before I could even process what was happening. Cameras were already focused on me and microphones came so close that fast.

"Ayanna! Is it true you were seeing Gabriel Vance before the wedding?"

"Did Evan leave you because of the affair?"

"How long have you been hiding this from the Hartwell family?"

I pressed my back against the wall and held my bag tightly. The questions kept coming and I couldn't move. I couldn't think at all. I felt trapped and humiliated all over again and I hated it. I hated that even after everything Evan put me through, I was still the one being cornered and questioned like I was the one who did something wrong.

Then I heard a car cut through the noise. A black SUV pulled up aggressively, forcing the crowd to scatter. Two men in suits stepped out first, and then Gabriel came out from the vehicle. He was wearing a dark brown suit, walking toward me like the reporters weren't even there. They stepped back on their own. Nobody wanted to be in his way.

He didn't say a word to me. He just wrapped his arm around my waist, pulled me against his side, and kept walking.

"Mr. Vance! Any comment on the allegations?"

That question made Gabriel stop. He turned toward the reporter slowly, and the entire street went quiet. "Ayanna is under my protection," he said, his voice calm but heavy enough to fill the whole street. "If any of you follow her, harass her, or print another lie about her, I will personally make sure your outlet doesn't survive the week."

Nobody spoke after that. Gabriel guided me into the SUV and the door closed behind us, cutting off every sound from outside. I leaned back against the seat and finally exhaled.

I looked at him as the car pulled away. He was already looking straight ahead, completely unbothered. Like saving me from a crowd of reporters was just normal task to him.

I didn't say thank you right away. I just looked at him for a moment, this man who kept showing up without being asked, and thought that maybe not everyone in my life was going to let me down.

Maybe.

"Good morning, Yanna."The voice was warm and familiar. I slowly turned around, my heart still pounding inside my chest. For a second, I was almost afraid of who I was about to see.It was Gabriel. He stood a few feet away, holding two cups of coffee in his hands. He was wearing his usual suit, and the small smile on his face looked so normal that it almost made me question everything."You look like you've seen a ghost," he said with a small laugh. He held one of the cups out to me before raising an eyebrow. "Coffee? I figured you could use one."I stared at him without moving. The last message was still open on my phone, and the words kept repeating in my head. I quickly locked the screen before he could notice."Thanks," I said as I took the coffee from him. Our fingers brushed for a second, and I forced myself not to pull away. "I didn't expect to see you here."Gabriel shrugged as if it wasn't a big deal. He took a sip of his coffee before looking back at me. "I was already nearb

  • Left at the Altar, Claimed by a Billionaire    Chapter 34: How Did They Know?

I didn't want to go to work. After everything I had discovered last night, the office was the last place I wanted to be. The people I used to greet every morning didn't feel the same anymore. Every smile made me wonder if it was real, and every friendly conversation made me question if someone was hiding something from me.A part of me wanted to stay home and lock the door behind me. It would have been easier to pretend none of this was happening. But deep down, I knew I couldn't keep hiding forever. If I wanted the truth, I had to face the people who might know more than they were letting on.I stood in front of the mirror for a long time without moving. My reflection looked unfamiliar, like I was looking at someone who had been carrying too much for too long. My eyes were swollen from lack of sleep, and the dark circles underneath them made it obvious that I hadn't rested at all.I reached up and gently touched my face. "You look like a mess," I whispered to myself, forcing out a we

The next morning, my body was tired, but my mind would not stop thinking about the accident area and what we might find there. I lay in bed for a few minutes, staring at the ceiling, before forcing myself to get up.I got dressed quietly, trying not to make any noise that would wake Gabriel up. He was still asleep, and I wanted to keep it that way. The less he knew about what I was doing, the safer he would be. I grabbed my bag and made sure my notebook and the envelope were inside. I was about to leave when my eyes landed on an old box in the corner of my closet. It was filled with wedding files and documents from the planning process. I don't know why I stopped to look at it. I opened the box and started flipping through the papers. Most of them were old contracts, vendor lists, and seating arrangements. Nothing that seemed important now. But as I reached the bottom, my fingers brushed against a thin folder I had almost forgotten about. It was labeled "Miscellaneous." Inside, I fo

  • Left at the Altar, Claimed by a Billionaire    Chapter 32: The Decision to Investigate

After hanging up with Chloe, I stayed still for a moment with my phone in my hand. Without thinking, my thumb scrolled through my contacts until it stopped on Gabriel's name.I stared at it for a few seconds. I wanted to call him. I wanted to tell him everything that had happened since yesterday. But before I could press the call button, I slowly pulled my thumb away."No..." I quietly whispered to myself. This wasn't the right time. I still didn't know who I could trust, and until I had real proof, I couldn't risk dragging Gabriel into something I didn't fully understand. The last thing I wanted was for him to get hurt because of me.I let out a deep sigh because of that. I locked my phone and slipped it back into my bag.I made my decision right there. Chloe was the only person I could trust with this, and for now, that was enough. The fewer people who knew about the pictures, the safer it would be. Until we found real proof, I couldn't risk telling anyone else.I reached for a note

  • Left at the Altar, Claimed by a Billionaire    Chapter 31: The Growing Unease

I was lying on my bed with the pictures still in my hand. I had been looking at the same ones for hours, hoping I would notice something I had missed before. But no matter how many times I looked at them, I still couldn't find the answers I was searching for.I slowly closed my eyes, hoping I could finally get some sleep, but it only lasted a few seconds. The pictures quickly came back to my mind, forcing me to open my eyes again. With a quiet sigh, I reached for them once more.I didn't even realize how much time had passed until I looked at the clock on my bedside table. It was already morning, and I hadn't slept at all. I stared at the picture in my hand for a long moment before my eyes stopped on the person wearing the black hoodie."Who are you?" I quietly whispered. "Why do you feel so familiar?" I searched my memory again, hoping this time I would remember something. But no matter how hard I tried, I still couldn't figure out where I had seen that person before, and somehow, th

  • Left at the Altar, Claimed by a Billionaire    Chapter 30: The Bookstore Meeting

I barely got any sleep that night. No matter how hard I tried to close my eyes and force myself to rest, my mind refused to calm down. Every time I started to drift off, the pictures would immediately appear in my head again. The black van, the masked men, Scarlett standing there like she had nothing to be afraid of, and that tall hooded person, hiding their face as if they didn't want anyone to know who they really were.I couldn't stop asking myself the same questions. Who was that person? Why were they helping me? And why did they want me to come to the meeting alone? "None of this makes sense," I whispered to myself as I stared at the dark ceiling.I closed my eyes and let out a quiet sigh, hoping I would finally figure everything out. But no matter how much I thought about it, I still couldn't find a single answer. "Why can't I understand any of this?" I muttered under my breath and let out a deep sigh.Every answer I came up with only brought more questions. Instead of making th

He was getting closer and closer to us because I could hear his footsteps growing louder with every second. I froze for a moment. This wasn't the time I had imagined facing him. I shouldn't have left the apartment for someone as worthless as him. "Ayanna? Is that you?" he called out. His voice was

“I do.” I heard Evan’s voice from inside the church, and a small smile formed on my lips. He sounded obviously nervous. It seemed that even on the day of our wedding, the only heir of the Hartwell Group, was still rehearsing what he wanted to say. “Ready, Miss?” the wedding coordinator whisper
