Two days passed.

Madeline hadn't touched her phone.

Since that night, she has been in her room. She won't see anybody, ignoring all calls and messages, most of all Ethan's.

He kept calling her, but Madeline didn't care.

Each time her phone buzzed, she merely looked at it with a chill before shutting her eyes once more.

She needed time.

To forget Ethan's betrayal.

To erase the memory of that night.

To wipe away the sense of plainness and guilt each time she looked at her face in a mirror.

 ͏

However, Madeline couldn't hide forever.

͏

Today, Ethan's clan was taking them to a parents' wedding special.

Madeline had no pick but to go with her small face.

"Do we need to go to the doctor?"

The calm sound of Risha, Madeline's mom, ended the quiet in a car.

Madeline stared at him for a bit and then shook her head slowly. "I am fine, Mom, there is no need to worry."

She peered in the back view mirror, gazing at the face of her dad, Adhitama.

But, the guy stayed quiet, his face chill.

The past two days, her dad's mood seemed odd.

Madeline wasn't sure if it was only her feeling or if maybe her dad knew something?

  It couldn't be, right?

There was no way her dad knew what she did.

Madeline gulped and stared out the window. She picked to like the stroll without saying anything else.

When she got to Ethan's house, her groom was already there waiting for Madeline at the door with a silly grin on his face.

Like he’d never messed up at all. Like he wasn’t a bad guy who had let her down.

Madeline felt nauseous.

Without seeing, she went in with her mom and dad.

But Ethan's ha͏nd took her arm, halting her in her steps.

"What do you want?" Madeline said violently, shaking Ethan's grip off.

Ethan's face tightened, his sweet smile vanishing.

"Why don’t you pick up my calls and call me back?"

Madeline snorted coldly. "Do I need to explain?"

Ethan felt nervous. He peeked around, making sure no one was looking.

"Madeline, it's better not to speak about what took place that day with my folks or yours."

His tone was full of threat.

Madeline shut her eyes, staring at Ethan with a hate she had not felt before.

How can this guy ask her for such a thing! Does he have no pride?

Just when Madeline was going to answer Ethan, Arya, Ethan's dad, came close. "Why are you all still here?" he asked!

At that time Madeline grinned and said "Just a fast talk."

"Alright, let's talk. I wish to show you to Ethan's uncle!" Arya said, making Madeline smile and follow her father who was disabled into the house.

After walking into the banquet room Madeline saw a few guests already there.

Her eyes saw the shape of a strong man standing with them, talking to Ethan's mom and dad.

She didn't recognize the man.

"Come over, let me show you to uncle Nathaniel," Arya said to Ethan and Madeline.

Madeline went over with Ethan, getting near the tall, strong man who had got her eye.

And when the man turned around…

Madeline's heart skipped a beat.

Her face pale.

Their eyes met.

Him?!

Madeline wished to spin and flee as far as she could.

But it was too late.

The guy was also shocked to see her, but his face only changed for a bit before getting cold again.

Nathaniel looked at Madeline closely, but the next moment, he had a calm look, like they had not met before.

"Nathaniel, this is Madeline, our next daughter-in-law." said Monica, Ethan's mother with a proud smile.

Madeline couldn't breathe.

The guy who took her purity, who mocked her like an employed woman, was Ethan’s uncle?!

Madeline's hands were trembling hard. But, she tried to relax herself as she reached out to shake Nathaniel's hand.

But, when a big hand touched hers, Madeline felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Her body remembered all that hand did to her.

"I still can’t think you have a family member who’s lived in America for such a long time."

Arya's voice jolted Madeline from her thinking, making her quickly pull her hand from Nathaniel.

"Well, he is the son of my dad's second wife," Arya said with a laugh and a tap on Nathaniel͏'s shoulder. "He's just here for a little trip before going back abroad."

Nathaniel, who had been quiet and busy looking at Madeline, finally just pulled the sides of his mouth a bit then drank his drink with no expression.

"What a chance! How about, before Nathaniel goes back on his trip, we get Ethan and Madeline wed?" Ethan's mother said with a nice grin.

"That is a good thought!" Arya said, not less excited.

Hearing this, Madeline felt sad. After finding out about Ethan and Sonia's sneaky love, and how he just wanted to use her was Madeline meant to stay quiet?

No! She couldn't let this continue!

"I'm sorry, Sir, ma'am, but I can't marry Ethan. I want to call off our engagement."

Sonia stormed out of the ARS Company building, a cardboard box clutched tightly in her arms, filled with the personal belongings she had just cleared from her desk. Her hair was a mess, her lipstick slightly smeared her face with a mixture of anger, fear, and despair. As she walked down the corridor, whispers followed her, but Sonia didn’t care. There was only one thing on her mind Ethan. The late afternoon air felt heavy as Sonia stepped through the main doors of ARS Corporation. The sun was dipping westward, casting golden light across the glass façade of the towering building, the very place that had once symbolized her pride, and now, the place that had swallowed her whole. Her hands trembled as she tried to balance the box. Inside were fragments of her career achievement photos, her favorite coffee mug, and a plaque that had once filled her with pride. Now, they felt like mockery. Her heels clicked sharply against the marble floor, echoing thro

The morning sky was still veiled in a thin mist when the black car Nathaniel drove stopped in front of the ARS Corporation building. Madeline gazed at the towering structure through the window, her breath catching for a second. Even after a sleepless night of preparation, tension still weighed heavy on her chest. This wasn’t just another workday, this was the day of reckoning.Nathaniel turned off the engine and looked at her. “Are you sure you want to do this part alone at the start of the meeting?” he asked softly, his tone laced with worry. “I can present some of the data first if you want.”Madeline gave a faint smile, clutching the black folder tighter in her lap. “Thank you, but no. I want them to hear it directly from me. I’m the one who found it, so I’ll be the one to reveal it.”Nathaniel studied her for a moment before nodding slowly. There was something in his eyes a mix of pride and fear of losing

Madeline frowned. She was certain it hadn’t been there before. Her hand trembled slightly as she picked it up and unfolded the delicate piece of paper inside. The handwriting was elegant, but the message chilled her blood,“Stop digging, or you’ll lose more than just your career.”Madeline stared at the note for a long time. There was no signature, no clue of who had sent it. But the style of the writing felt familiar, too polished, too confident. Sonia. No one else would dare write her a message like that, except someone who knew she was getting too close to something big.Her heartbeat quickened, but she forced herself not to panic. The meaning of the note was clear, Sonia suspected something. But sending a threat? That was reckless. And in Madeline’s world, a mistake like that could become a turning point. She looked at the note once more before folding it back and locking it inside her drawer. Her gaze harden

The glow of Madeline’s laptop screen was the only light in her office that night. Outside, the city had long fallen asleep, but her eyes remained sharp, fixed on the numbers dancing across the screen. She had opened the financial report countless times since late afternoon, and the longer she studied it, the clearer it became that something was very wrong.Stacks of printed documents crowded her desk, the margins covered in red pen marks. Every piece of data pointed in the same direction of embezzlement. And not just a small amount. What caught her attention most was one name that appeared in every suspicious transaction, Sonia.Madeline frowned, staring at the report again in disbelief. Everything was too neat, too deliberate to be a simple clerical error. Each hidden transaction was buried among old projects, disguised under codes nearly identical to legitimate expenses. If she hadn’t noticed the small inconsistencies in the dates and digital signatures,

Madeline continued, her tone calm. “But now I think maybe it’s not about becoming whole again. Maybe it’s about learning to live with the pieces that are left and turning them into something new.”Nathaniel smiled faintly, stopping beside the desk. “You always have a way of making complicated things sound beautiful,” he said quietly.Madeline let out a small huff. “That’s because I don’t have much choice but to try and understand them.”She turned fully toward him, meeting his gaze. There was a long pause between them, a distance that wasn’t entirely physical.“And you?” Madeline asked suddenly. “You look like someone who knows exactly what he wants. But… is that really true?”The question made Nathaniel fall silent for a moment. He looked out the window, toward the city slowly brightening under the morning light. “Maybe not,” he

Madeline turned to look at him, her eyes reflecting the gentle light streaming through the window.“Even thought of something this small?”Nathaniel stepped closer, his voice calm but warm.“This isn’t something small, Madeline. You said you wanted to work. You wanted to stand on your own without depending on anyone. So I wanted to give you the space to do that.”Madeline fell silent, her chest warming. Everything she had dreamed of freedom, recognition, opportunity was now real, right in front of her. She walked toward the desk, brushing her fingertips over the nameplate, as if making sure it wasn’t an illusion. She looked at Nathaniel for a long moment, as if trying to read something hidden behind his composed expression. There was sincerity in his eyes, something deep that left her momentarily speechless. She slowly walked around the room, taking in every detail the file cabinet, the s
