Two days passed.

Madeline hadn't touched her phone.

Since that night, she has been in her room. She won't see anybody, ignoring all calls and messages, most of all Ethan's.

He kept calling her, but Madeline didn't care.

Each time her phone buzzed, she merely looked at it with a chill before shutting her eyes once more.

She needed time.

To forget Ethan's betrayal.

To erase the memory of that night.

To wipe away the sense of plainness and guilt each time she looked at her face in a mirror.

 ͏

However, Madeline couldn't hide forever.

͏

Today, Ethan's clan was taking them to a parents' wedding special.

Madeline had no pick but to go with her small face.

"Do we need to go to the doctor?"

The calm sound of Risha, Madeline's mom, ended the quiet in a car.

Madeline stared at him for a bit and then shook her head slowly. "I am fine, Mom, there is no need to worry."

She peered in the back view mirror, gazing at the face of her dad, Adhitama.

But, the guy stayed quiet, his face chill.

The past two days, her dad's mood seemed odd.

Madeline wasn't sure if it was only her feeling or if maybe her dad knew something?

  It couldn't be, right?

There was no way her dad knew what she did.

Madeline gulped and stared out the window. She picked to like the stroll without saying anything else.

When she got to Ethan's house, her groom was already there waiting for Madeline at the door with a silly grin on his face.

Like he’d never messed up at all. Like he wasn’t a bad guy who had let her down.

Madeline felt nauseous.

Without seeing, she went in with her mom and dad.

But Ethan's ha͏nd took her arm, halting her in her steps.

"What do you want?" Madeline said violently, shaking Ethan's grip off.

Ethan's face tightened, his sweet smile vanishing.

"Why don’t you pick up my calls and call me back?"

Madeline snorted coldly. "Do I need to explain?"

Ethan felt nervous. He peeked around, making sure no one was looking.

"Madeline, it's better not to speak about what took place that day with my folks or yours."

His tone was full of threat.

Madeline shut her eyes, staring at Ethan with a hate she had not felt before.

How can this guy ask her for such a thing! Does he have no pride?

Just when Madeline was going to answer Ethan, Arya, Ethan's dad, came close. "Why are you all still here?" he asked!

At that time Madeline grinned and said "Just a fast talk."

"Alright, let's talk. I wish to show you to Ethan's uncle!" Arya said, making Madeline smile and follow her father who was disabled into the house.

After walking into the banquet room Madeline saw a few guests already there.

Her eyes saw the shape of a strong man standing with them, talking to Ethan's mom and dad.

She didn't recognize the man.

"Come over, let me show you to uncle Nathaniel," Arya said to Ethan and Madeline.

Madeline went over with Ethan, getting near the tall, strong man who had got her eye.

And when the man turned around…

Madeline's heart skipped a beat.

Her face pale.

Their eyes met.

Him?!

Madeline wished to spin and flee as far as she could.

But it was too late.

The guy was also shocked to see her, but his face only changed for a bit before getting cold again.

Nathaniel looked at Madeline closely, but the next moment, he had a calm look, like they had not met before.

"Nathaniel, this is Madeline, our next daughter-in-law." said Monica, Ethan's mother with a proud smile.

Madeline couldn't breathe.

The guy who took her purity, who mocked her like an employed woman, was Ethan’s uncle?!

Madeline's hands were trembling hard. But, she tried to relax herself as she reached out to shake Nathaniel's hand.

But, when a big hand touched hers, Madeline felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Her body remembered all that hand did to her.

"I still can’t think you have a family member who’s lived in America for such a long time."

Arya's voice jolted Madeline from her thinking, making her quickly pull her hand from Nathaniel.

"Well, he is the son of my dad's second wife," Arya said with a laugh and a tap on Nathaniel͏'s shoulder. "He's just here for a little trip before going back abroad."

Nathaniel, who had been quiet and busy looking at Madeline, finally just pulled the sides of his mouth a bit then drank his drink with no expression.

"What a chance! How about, before Nathaniel goes back on his trip, we get Ethan and Madeline wed?" Ethan's mother said with a nice grin.

"That is a good thought!" Arya said, not less excited.

Hearing this, Madeline felt sad. After finding out about Ethan and Sonia's sneaky love, and how he just wanted to use her was Madeline meant to stay quiet?

No! She couldn't let this continue!

"I'm sorry, Sir, ma'am, but I can't marry Ethan. I want to call off our engagement."

Nathaniel reached for a pen on the table, opened several documents, and began explaining his new plan in detail step by step. Sonia listened closely, occasionally nodding or asking critical questions. The tension slowly began to ease, replaced by a growing sense of professional focus.Yet Nathaniel remained fully aware. Every word, every decision, every move had to be weighed carefully. Because it wasn’t only his reputation at stake, but also the fragile yet precious relationship between himself and Madeline and between himself and Sonia.Nathaniel stayed calm, patient, and meticulous. Sonia remained critical, attentive, and at times challenging, but Nathaniel managed to balance that tension with a mature, professional approach.Nathaniel looked at the documents in front of him, drawing a long breath before beginning to explain his new plan. Sonia sat across the table, her posture firm, though her eyes revealed a curiosity she c

Sonia scoffed and straightened her back. “You’ve always been good with words, Nathaniel. But words alone aren’t enough. Your actions back then your actions now they all have consequences. There are many people who still doubt your decisions.”Nathaniel looked at her not angry, only restraining himself from responding sharply. “I understand their doubts. And I’m not asking everyone to immediately trust this decision. But I’m confident if we focus on the results, everything will prove itself.”Sonia crossed her arms over her chest, tension still etched on her face. “Focus on the results? I’ve learned a lot from the past. But what I see is that you came back too quickly, without considering the emotional impact. Do you really think that just by taking over the project again, everyone will simply follow your orders?”Nathaniel nodded slowly. “I don’t expect everyone to follow blindly. But

The night continued in a comfortable silence. They both knew challenges would come from third parties, unresolved pasts, mounting work problems. But for the first time, they felt ready to face them together, not alone. As the city lights began to dim in the middle of the night, Nathaniel looked at Madeline and said, “Sleep. We have many things waiting tomorrow but for tonight, it’s just the two of us. There’s no outside world.”Madeline smiled, rested her head on his shoulder, and whispered, “No outside world just you and me.”The next morning, sunlight slipped gently through the curtains of Nathaniel’s office. The atmosphere was still quiet, broken only by the soft hum of the coffee machine. Madeline sat in the guest chair, adjusting to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, while Nathaniel stood near his desk, reviewing documents with a slight frown.“Morning,” Madeline greeted softly, her voice warm wi

“Aren’t you afraid of everything that’s happened? Of me, of my work, of our future?” Madeline asked seriously, her eyes softly glowing from the park lights coming through the window.Nathaniel looked down at their hands intertwined. “I’m afraid. But I’m more afraid of losing you again. I’ve restrained myself for too long, pretending to be strong on the outside, while my heart has known what it wants.”Madeline smiled faintly. “And now you aren’t holding back anymore?”Nathaniel raised his eyebrows, slightly mischievous, but his eyes remained gentle. “Maybe I’m still holding back a little. But that’s because I want you to savor every step slowly. I don’t want to rush and ruin this moment.”They laughed softly, a light yet warm sound, like medicine healing the remnants of awkwardness and fear that had piled up.“Then,” Madeline said, cupping Nathaniel’s chin, “I want you to promise. Promise that you’ll stay like this stay with me, no matter what.”Nathaniel looked at her deeply. “I prom

“I can hire a whole new department if necessary,” Nathaniel replied haughtily.“Don't be a spoiled brat,” Madeline patted his arm.Nathaniel grinned slightly. “You said start from scratch. I was just following orders.”Madeline laughed briefly. It felt like it had been a long time since she'd laughed without fear. Then her laughter faded, replaced by a serious expression. “Nathaniel.”“Hm?”“I want to fix a lot of things, too.”Nathaniel turned his head. “For example?”Madeline stared at her hands.“You might have felt too often that I was distant. Or that I didn’t trust you.”Nathaniel didn’t deny it. “Yes.”Madeline bit her lower lip. “I’m sorry.&rdquo

Madeline became quiet. Then she nodded.Nathaniel led her to the bathroom. He switched on the tap, set the water to the temperature, moistened a small towel and then looked at her once more.“May I?" he inquired.Madeline exhaled softly, her cheeks reddening with shame. "Yes.”Nathaniel softly raised her chin using his hand while his left hand tenderly cleansed her face with the warm towel. His actions were deliberate and careful as though she were the treasure he had ever handled.Madeline shut her eyes, relishing the feeling. "You are being quite gentle.”Nathaniel kept going, merely lifting one eyebrow a little. "Naturally. If I were harsh you’d be annoyed.”Madeline smiled. “I wouldn’t be upset.”Nathaniel stopped the movement. “No?”Madeline opened her eyes and looked at him. “No. Because I know you’re watching over me.”Something softened in Nathaniel’s eyes.Time seemed to stop for a moment. Then Nathaniel took her face in both hands, pressing their foreheads together like they
