Chapter 3

Author: Quinquennium
I stared in shock, my eyes wide.

How could this be happening?

When the fire broke out, the scene had descended into chaos. Amelia had been so terrified that she'd practically frozen.

I'd been the one who risked everything to smash my way out of the closet to save her.

That was how I'd broken my leg.

Austin was still holding his ground. His eyes bloodshot, he roared at Henry.

“Henry! That was so loud. Are you deaf or blind? How much time could it possibly take to go in and check on her?”

His furious outburst finally made Henry's expression waver.

He was just about to speak when Mom's urgent voice came through the radio again.

“Henry, you took so many people upstairs. Have you rescued Bruno yet?”

“Amelia is so worried about that dog that her condition has worsened. She's outside crying and convulsing, absolutely refusing to get into the ambulance. If this drags on any longer, her life could really be in danger.”

Whatever hesitation remained in Henry's eyes vanished completely.

“Austin, please calm down. Don't let your personal feelings interfere with rescue operations.

“Everyone knows about your relationship history. You should be keeping your distance to avoid any suspicion of favoritism.”

Austin's eyes widened in disbelief. He looked as though he'd just heard the most ridiculous joke imaginable.

“Have you lost your mind? What does avoiding suspicion have to do with this? She's a living human being!

“You're willing to mobilize every available resource to save a dog, so why can't you spare just one person to go inside and check on her? It would take thirty seconds at most!”

Someone in the rescue team turned away, unable to bear watching, and let out a helpless sigh.

“Captain Xerri, just let it go. These are direct orders from the command center.

“The director said that even though Ms. Smyth is her own daughter, the more sensitive the situation, the more important it is to prioritize the safety of the public and their property. Family must be put last, without exception.”

I didn’t know how much time passed before nearly all the blood in my abdomen had drained away.

Finally, I heard someone outside.

Henry approached the door again, but the first thing he said was, “Tammy, Amelia's dog is safe, but you need to wait a little longer.

“Mom doesn't want Amelia going to the hospital alone. After all, today's your wedding, and Amelia came all this way to be your bridesmaid. Now she's been through such a terrible fright. No matter how you look at it, our entire family has a responsibility to see that she's taken care of.

“Mom has already arranged the city's highest-priority emergency route and even left instructions to clear the route to the hospital. Five minutes at most. Once we've settled Amelia, we'll come get you.”

After saying that, he comforted me in a soft voice, just as he'd done countless times when we were children.

“Hang in there. Don't be afraid. You've always been such a sensible girl.”

James stepped forward and ordered the others to drag Austin away without hesitation.

“You've seriously violated fire-rescue protocol by letting personal feelings interfere with your duties, and you've obstructed rescue operations. You're to return immediately and cooperate with the investigation.”

He sneered.

“My wife has me, her husband, her older brother, and her own mother here. She doesn't need an outsider like you worrying about her.”

In an instant, I lost every last bit of strength.

I stared blankly ahead, my eyes empty, watching as the frenzied flames burned through the last remaining barrier.

Austin wore a black overcoat and held a bouquet of white bellflowers. They were my favorite. He remembered. He had always remembered.Standing before my gravestone, he gazed for a long, long time at the girl in the photograph, her smile bright and radiant."Tammy."When he finally spoke, his voice was so hoarse it was almost unrecognizable."I'm sorry."He paused, as if trying to find the right words, or perhaps struggling to suppress the emotions surging inside him."If I'd stood my ground a little more back then, if I'd married you despite everyone's objections, would things have turned out differently?"His eyes were completely red as he said this.He stood helplessly before my grave, like a child who'd done something wrong."Your mom threatened to kill herself if you married me. She said she'd hang herself or jump off a building. She told you that if you dared to marry me, she'd die right in front of you. You were so frightened that you said we should just forget about i

The case was solved much faster than anyone had expected.Amelia's cousin confessed everything on the third day after he was taken into custody.Slumped in the interrogation chair, he wept uncontrollably, insisting that he'd had no choice. Amelia had told him to use the cheapest materials.“After all, the Smyths were rich. Nothing could possibly go wrong.”The noncompliant polyurethane insulation, the substandard electrical wiring, and the fireproof coating had been cut back to the bare minimum.Every violation was documented in black and white, with irrefutable evidence to back it up.Amelia had no way to defend herself. She tried to pin all the blame on her cousin, claiming she was innocent and knew nothing about what he'd done. However, when the police recovered their chat history from her phone, she finally fell silent. In those logs, she had made her intentions crystal clear. "Cut corners wherever you can. Why not keep the money for ourselves? Just make sure Tamara doesn

"That's right, Tammy. Amelia is so thoughtful. Why do you always assume the worst of her? Always making snide remarks and throwing a fit for no reason."Now, those words felt like knives, stabbing everyone in the heart.Henry roared through clenched teeth."Amelia, our family has always treated you well. Why would you do this to us?"Seeing that there was no longer any point in keeping up the act, Amelia dropped her facade and burst into wild, unhinged laughter."What gives you the right to say that? Didn't you promise to treat me like your own sister? Didn't you say you'd love me like your own daughter?"She pointed at everyone in the room one by one, her voice sharp and grating."If I was the only one who mattered to you, then why did you still treat Tamara so well?"Her words left everyone stunned.Mom spoke with trembling lips."Tammy is my only daughter—""Enough!" Amelia cut her off with a mocking laugh."If she's your only daughter, then why did you treat me so well?

The video played on a loop in the living room. The footage wasn't particularly clear, but it was more than enough for everyone to see exactly what had happened. In the hallway engulfed in flames, I desperately smashed my way out of the closet.Amelia had already been so terrified by the scene before her that she was sobbing uncontrollably.“Help me! Somebody, please help me!”The moment the heavy object began to topple, I instinctively reached out, desperately trying to pull her out of the way.But a cruel, calculating glint flashed through her eyes. While I was completely off guard, she shoved me backward without the slightest hesitation.“No! This isn't real!”Amelia rushed in from outside in a panic, trying to snatch the remote control.“Henry! Mrs. Smyth! Please believe me! This isn't real!”Mom stared at her in disbelief.“Amelia, weren't you having an asthma attack at the hospital?”Henry clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned white. He stared at the f

“No! This absolutely can't be happening!”Inside the charred master bedroom, a deathly silence hung in the air.The calm, confident expression on Mom's face shattered in an instant.“This absolutely cannot be my daughter! It can't be!”Like a madwoman, she suddenly began screaming hysterically in front of the cameras.“Tammy underwent the fire-escape training I personally designed when she was little! She's so smart, and she's always been so good at saving herself. How could she possibly have burned to death here? This must be some kind of dummy someone left behind! It's a prank!”With that, she stumbled into the smoldering wreckage, where the acrid stench of burnt materials still hung in the air.She searched wildly, like a woman who'd lost her mind.“Tammy, stop playing around! Come out already! I know you're upset, and Mom's here to take you home. Come out and show everyone how sensible you are!”Just then, Henry and my newlywed husband had finally arrived.“Mom, what's go

The fire was finally extinguished.Mom calmly and methodically handled the aftermath while Henry was directing emergency vehicles across the city to clear a path for Amelia.James was in the emergency department of a central-city hospital, registering Amelia and paying her medical bills. He'd even pulled every string he could to secure the city's top respiratory specialists.Meanwhile, I had already died inside the burning building, along with the baby I had been carrying for two months. All signs of life had left me.Things hadn't always been this way, though. Growing up, I'd once been the apple of their eyes. Then an orphan with no parents moved into next door, and everything changed.Mom was always praising Amelia with pity in her eyes.“She's been dealt such a cruel hand in life, yet she's still strong and sensible.”Whenever I complained about their favoritism, Henry would frown and scold me.“Amelia has already suffered enough. Can you stop being so selfish?”Even Ja
