Chapter 2

Author: Quinquennium
But I couldn't accept it.

I refused to accept it.

All because of their laughable obsession with avoiding the suspicion of favoritism, I was going to be burned alive.

The agony made my entire body convulse uncontrollably.

I bit down hard on my lower lip and tremblingly pulled out my phone.

All I needed was a video, even one that lasted just a few seconds, and it would prove I wasn't lying.

However, I never imagined that my own mother would cut off my last chance of survival.

“Tamara, the command center isn't a tool for you to throw tantrums with.

“To stop you from acting so irresponsibly again, I've remotely disabled your phone. Stay in the safe zone like a good girl. When it's time to rescue you, we'll come.”

My breath caught in an instant.

“Tammy, how are you? Are you okay?”

Outside the door, Austin still hadn't given up.

I hurriedly opened my mouth to answer, but my throat was so badly burned that I couldn't make a sound.

I took a deep breath and forced myself to stay calm.

No. I couldn't give up yet.

With great difficulty, I picked up a piece of rubble beside me and struck the scorching floor with it, again and again.

I was sending a distress signal.

Three short taps. Three long. Three more short taps.

My left leg was broken.

I'd lost all feeling in it.

My oxygen was running out.

My consciousness was fading.

Austin had clearly understood.

After a moment of silence, he gritted his teeth and made a firm decision.

“Tammy, don't worry! No matter what happens, I'll get you out of there!”

It didn't take long for me to understand what he meant.

Soon afterward, my older brother, Henry Smyth, and my husband, James Stokes, charged upstairs with the rescue team and grabbed Austin by the collar.

“Austin, have you lost your mind?”

“What the hell has Tamara done to you to make you forget your place and report over everyone's heads? Do you have any idea how serious the consequences will be if this gets investigated?”

“Consequences?”

Austin was absolutely furious.

“Henry Smyth, are you even human?

“The fire inside is about to get out of control! Your own sister is trapped in there, and no one knows whether she's dead or alive. Shouldn't you at least go in and check on her before making your damn judgment?”

Henry froze and instinctively glanced toward the door.

Just then, a weak, pitiful voice came through the radio. It was Amelia Thorn.

“Henry, how is Tamara doing? Why don't you... Why don't you stop worrying about Bruno for now?

“If something really does happen to Bruno, then I guess it was just meant to be. Boohoo.”

Sure enough, Henry couldn't stand hearing her say things like that.

He stopped in his tracks, immediately regaining his usual cold, self-assured arrogance.

“Tamara, stop pretending.

“Mom taught you all kinds of emergency procedures for surviving a fire when you were little. What could possibly happen to you in there? No matter what, Bruno is a living creature, too. You're an adult. There's a limit to how childish you can be!”

James looked equally disappointed.

“Tamara, you've really gone too far.

“Trying to force us to give in by deliberately misleading the rescue workers.”

The flames continued to roar.

An overwhelming sense of absurdity washed over me.

So, in their eyes, I wasn’t even worth as much as Amelia’s dog.

Suddenly, a deep cracking sound came from overhead.

My eyes widened.

The ceiling beam came crashing down.

Austin's expression changed drastically. He lunged toward the door and screamed in desperation.

“Tammy, are you okay? Answer me! Did it hit you?”

I wanted to answer him. I wanted to tell him to save my baby.

But all I could do was shake my head frantically.

My mouth opened and closed.

Not a single sound came out.

Bright red blood kept spilling from my mouth.

The instant the beam came crashing down, I'd dragged my broken leg and desperately crawled forward.

I'd managed to protect my head, but the beam had struck my abdomen.

James, however, let out a scornful laugh.

“Tamara, stop the act. Every construction material used in this house is top-grade, fire-resistant, and heat-resistant.

“Even if you're trying to compete for attention and make everyone focus on you, don't resort to such cheap, pathetic tricks. Besides, Amelia herself told us there's absolutely nothing wrong with you.”

Austin wore a black overcoat and held a bouquet of white bellflowers. They were my favorite. He remembered. He had always remembered.Standing before my gravestone, he gazed for a long, long time at the girl in the photograph, her smile bright and radiant."Tammy."When he finally spoke, his voice was so hoarse it was almost unrecognizable."I'm sorry."He paused, as if trying to find the right words, or perhaps struggling to suppress the emotions surging inside him."If I'd stood my ground a little more back then, if I'd married you despite everyone's objections, would things have turned out differently?"His eyes were completely red as he said this.He stood helplessly before my grave, like a child who'd done something wrong."Your mom threatened to kill herself if you married me. She said she'd hang herself or jump off a building. She told you that if you dared to marry me, she'd die right in front of you. You were so frightened that you said we should just forget about i

The case was solved much faster than anyone had expected.Amelia's cousin confessed everything on the third day after he was taken into custody.Slumped in the interrogation chair, he wept uncontrollably, insisting that he'd had no choice. Amelia had told him to use the cheapest materials.“After all, the Smyths were rich. Nothing could possibly go wrong.”The noncompliant polyurethane insulation, the substandard electrical wiring, and the fireproof coating had been cut back to the bare minimum.Every violation was documented in black and white, with irrefutable evidence to back it up.Amelia had no way to defend herself. She tried to pin all the blame on her cousin, claiming she was innocent and knew nothing about what he'd done. However, when the police recovered their chat history from her phone, she finally fell silent. In those logs, she had made her intentions crystal clear. "Cut corners wherever you can. Why not keep the money for ourselves? Just make sure Tamara doesn

"That's right, Tammy. Amelia is so thoughtful. Why do you always assume the worst of her? Always making snide remarks and throwing a fit for no reason."Now, those words felt like knives, stabbing everyone in the heart.Henry roared through clenched teeth."Amelia, our family has always treated you well. Why would you do this to us?"Seeing that there was no longer any point in keeping up the act, Amelia dropped her facade and burst into wild, unhinged laughter."What gives you the right to say that? Didn't you promise to treat me like your own sister? Didn't you say you'd love me like your own daughter?"She pointed at everyone in the room one by one, her voice sharp and grating."If I was the only one who mattered to you, then why did you still treat Tamara so well?"Her words left everyone stunned.Mom spoke with trembling lips."Tammy is my only daughter—""Enough!" Amelia cut her off with a mocking laugh."If she's your only daughter, then why did you treat me so well?

The video played on a loop in the living room. The footage wasn't particularly clear, but it was more than enough for everyone to see exactly what had happened. In the hallway engulfed in flames, I desperately smashed my way out of the closet.Amelia had already been so terrified by the scene before her that she was sobbing uncontrollably.“Help me! Somebody, please help me!”The moment the heavy object began to topple, I instinctively reached out, desperately trying to pull her out of the way.But a cruel, calculating glint flashed through her eyes. While I was completely off guard, she shoved me backward without the slightest hesitation.“No! This isn't real!”Amelia rushed in from outside in a panic, trying to snatch the remote control.“Henry! Mrs. Smyth! Please believe me! This isn't real!”Mom stared at her in disbelief.“Amelia, weren't you having an asthma attack at the hospital?”Henry clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned white. He stared at the f

“No! This absolutely can't be happening!”Inside the charred master bedroom, a deathly silence hung in the air.The calm, confident expression on Mom's face shattered in an instant.“This absolutely cannot be my daughter! It can't be!”Like a madwoman, she suddenly began screaming hysterically in front of the cameras.“Tammy underwent the fire-escape training I personally designed when she was little! She's so smart, and she's always been so good at saving herself. How could she possibly have burned to death here? This must be some kind of dummy someone left behind! It's a prank!”With that, she stumbled into the smoldering wreckage, where the acrid stench of burnt materials still hung in the air.She searched wildly, like a woman who'd lost her mind.“Tammy, stop playing around! Come out already! I know you're upset, and Mom's here to take you home. Come out and show everyone how sensible you are!”Just then, Henry and my newlywed husband had finally arrived.“Mom, what's go

The fire was finally extinguished.Mom calmly and methodically handled the aftermath while Henry was directing emergency vehicles across the city to clear a path for Amelia.James was in the emergency department of a central-city hospital, registering Amelia and paying her medical bills. He'd even pulled every string he could to secure the city's top respiratory specialists.Meanwhile, I had already died inside the burning building, along with the baby I had been carrying for two months. All signs of life had left me.Things hadn't always been this way, though. Growing up, I'd once been the apple of their eyes. Then an orphan with no parents moved into next door, and everything changed.Mom was always praising Amelia with pity in her eyes.“She's been dealt such a cruel hand in life, yet she's still strong and sensible.”Whenever I complained about their favoritism, Henry would frown and scold me.“Amelia has already suffered enough. Can you stop being so selfish?”Even Ja
