Chapter 6

Author: Dog in a Blanket
Gabriel's POV

I lay alone in the nurse's office all day. No one took care of me or helped dress my wounds.

When I got up that evening, I had to brace myself against the wall for a while before I felt steady enough to stand.

Once I was back in my dorm, I absentmindedly opened Instagram. The moment I saw the first post, I paused.

Esther had posted a close-up of her and Lionel clinking glasses. She had tagged a trendy new restaurant downtown.

The caption was, "Just checked out another trendy spot. So good!"

Last night, she left me alone at the nurse's office and said, "I think you need some time to cool off."

Then she went downtown and had dinner with Lionel for three hours. They took pictures and posted them on Instagram, laughing as they clinked glasses together.

But I didn't care about that anymore.

Someone knocked on the dorm room door before opening it.

Lionel poked his head into the room and grinned at me as if nothing had ever happened. "Come on, Gabriel! Let me treat you to dinner.

"Consider it my apology. I didn't invite you yesterday because you were hurt. Don't be mad, okay?"

Lionel came over and grabbed me by the wrist, his grip surprisingly firm. "Come on. I already booked us a table."

Just like that, he pulled me out the door.

The restaurant was packed, and the smell of food filled the air. The three of us took our seats. Esther sat to my left, while Lionel sat across from me.

"Gabriel, here you go." Lionel made a token effort to put something on my plate. Then he turned to Esther and continued chatting with her.

As they talked, I sat beside them, pushing my food around without taking a single bite. Noticing this, he suddenly leaned over.

"Are you still mad at us? Honestly, I get it. You've always been introverted and insecure since you were a child. And you've always been kind of petty too.

"Of course. It must be hard for you to see Esther and me getting along so well." Lionel smiled. I couldn't tell whether it was out of pity or concern.

"Don't worry. I'll teach you how to deal with people and handle yourself. After all, we're best friends."

With that, Lionel turned to Esther and winked at her. "Isn't that right, Esther? I'll always have your back."

"Oh, just shut up and eat your food."

The two of them burst into laughter again, making my stomach churn. I set my fork down.

"I'm practically done here. I have to go." I got up and headed for the door.

Lionel got up too and ran after me, grabbing me by the arm. "You barely had anything. Are you mad again? If I did something wrong, just tell me…"

Esther's voice rang out from behind us. "Lionel wanted to show you how sorry he was, so he went out of his way to treat you to dinner. You're seriously still mad at him? We're friends, aren't we? Do you really have to make such a big deal out of this?"

There was a side street next to the restaurant entrance, with cars passing back and forth in front of us.

Lionel was still holding onto my arm, turning sideways to speak to Esther.

"Let me go!" I tried to yank my arm free so I could leave this place as soon as possible, but he refused to let go. He just kept insisting that I go back inside and continue eating.

Just then, a van came speeding out of nowhere.

Esther yelled, "Watch out!"

She came running in my direction, but in the chaos, I saw her reach out and grab Lionel's wrist, yanking him hard toward the curb. They stumbled and fell together on the sidewalk, away from the road.

Esther held Lionel protectively in her arms, one hand cradling the back of his head.

I stood in the middle of the road, unable to react in time. The van slammed into me, sending me flying. I heard my body hit the pavement.

Esther spotted me from across the street. Her mouth opened slightly, as if she were about to scream my name.

But the next moment, Lionel, who was still in her arms, hissed in pain. She immediately looked down at him, frantically checking if he was hurt.

Esther desperately looked around for a car to take him to the hospital. Finally, she helped him into a taxi, staying right by his side.

Even as she left, she never once looked at me.

I lay sprawled on the pavement as five years of memories flashed before my eyes.

Her smile. The way she looked from behind. All the promises she had made. Everything we had came to nothing.

"Gabriel, as long as I'm here, you'll never be alone again."

A sharp pain in my back slowly spread until it reached my chest. It felt like my heart was being torn apart, leaving me completely drained.

Someone took me to the hospital. The doctor wanted to admit me, but I refused.

After picking up my medication, I got my wounds bandaged before calling for a taxi. The moment I stepped out of the hospital, the cold wind hit me, making me shiver from head to toe.

I hadn't brought a single thing with me. All I had was myself—the quiet, innocent person I used to be.

The streetlights blurred past one after another. I watched the city's neon lights fade into the distance behind me and slowly closed my eyes.

"Esther, we're done."

Gabriel's POVThe woman raised her hand and pressed it against her chest, blood seeping through her fingers. She looked up at me, and I realized it was Esther.Esther had grown terribly thin, her cheekbones jutting out. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, but there was still a spark in them. She gazed at me, looking as if she wanted to say something. She then pulled her hand away from her chest. It was trembling, her fingertips slick with blood. Blood trickled between the gaps of her fingers, dripping onto the pages of my book. It soaked into the paper, spreading into a dark stain. Esther reached out to touch my face. Her fingers felt cool against my skin as they brushed lightly over my cheekbone. Her lips trembled as she struggled to speak. "Can you forgive me now?"She fixed her gaze on me as blood continued to drip onto the pages of my book. One drop. Then another. My tears fell onto the back of her hand, and her fingers twitched. "I forgave you a long time ago."A faint

Gabriel's POV"You didn't stand up for me," I said. "Not once.""I kept messaging in that group chat every day, but no one even bothered to reply. People judged me whenever I walked around campus. "After that shelf came crashing down on me in the equipment room, I couldn't even get up. Every second of it was hell. Did you ever stop to think about what I'd been through?"I stopped. The sun felt warm on my face. My eyes stung a little, but no tears fell. "I withdrew from school back home so I could be happy for once. I came here to start a new chapter. "I did all this for myself, not so you could come here and play victim in front of me." I pulled my hand free easily, and she made no move to hold on. "Esther." I finally glanced at her. "You should go home."I turned to leave. I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like someone lowering themselves to the ground. The wooden bench creaked once behind me. Then all I heard was the wind rust

Gabriel's POV"You know how easily embarrassed Gabriel gets. The whole school will be talking about this tomorrow. Have you thought about how he's supposed to face everyone after this?"Lily's voice was full of anger, but she didn't shout. Every word came through clearly. "You embarrassed him in front of so many people. And you call that love?"Esther's shoulders slumped. Lily's words seemed to have taken the last bit of strength out of her. She gulped hard and took a step back in silence. Lily didn't say anything either and turned to look at me. Her gaze searched mine, full of concern. Then she held out her hand to me, palm up, and waited. I walked up to her, placing my hand in hers. She took it and led me back to my dorm. I didn't even look back at Esther. It was quiet beneath the streetlight. She didn't run after me. But I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like Esther had sunk to her knees. But I didn't stop. Lily's hand was w

Gabriel's POVI got up, still holding that stone, and took a step back. The young women on shore were looking our way. One of them laughed, and another held up her phone to take a picture of us. Lily stepped in front of me, shielding me from them. She whispered in my ear, "If you're scared, just stick close to me. I can get you out of here. They wouldn't even notice."Lily turned sideways, angling her shoulder toward me, making just enough room for me to hide behind her. She kept her back to the people on the shore. I lowered my gaze to her shoulder and at her soft cotton shirt. She stood there as if nothing could ever bother her. I leaned forward, pressing my forehead against her shoulder blade. She then led me around the far side of the lake and took me back to the main walkway, using an unlit path. The moment the streetlights came back on, I looked up and uncurled my fingers. The stone was still warm in my palm. Just as I was about to say something, I spotted Esther in

Gabriel's POVLater, Lily and her family migrated to Cromosia. On the day they left, I hid behind the door and refused to come out. Lily stood outside and called my name twice. Mom even tried to convince me to come out and say goodbye to her, but I wouldn't budge. As soon as the door shut, I crouched behind the couch and cried for ages. I held my hot chocolate as we walked, with Lily right beside me. As a cold gust of wind swept in from the street corner, she pulled up her hood and shot me a grin. "If you ever need help, just let me know," she said. "You don't even know anyone here. At least you have me."I replied, "Sure."Lily did keep her promise. She showed up every day with breakfast in hand, waiting downstairs so we could walk to class together. Then she would head to the library and save me a seat by the window. Lily remembered that I didn't like iced drinks, so she always got me something warm instead. When the days got colder, she started bringing an extra jacket

Third-Person POVEsther closed her eyes and said, "I have to find Gabriel."Ethan fell silent for a long time. Finally, he sighed, pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket, and placed it on the bedside table. "We've looked into it. Gabriel's studying at Lembin College in Cromosia. We reached out to the school while you were in the hospital. A spot just opened up in the exchange program, and they've approved your application."Esther turned to look at the piece of paper. There were a few lines of Cromosian on it, with the school's red seal at the bottom. Beside it was a photo, printed in low resolution. Gabriel stood at the entrance of a red-brick building, with a backpack on his back, his head turned toward someone next to him as he spoke. Esther stared at the photo for a very long time. Gabriel looked different. Sure, he had lost some weight, but he looked happier. She had seen his face from that angle every day over the past three years, but she had never seen him smile
