Chapter 5

Auteur: Dog in a Blanket
Gabriel's POV

The teacher took me to the nurse's office. The strong smell of disinfectant hung in the air. The doctor bandaged my wounds and left.

I lay there all afternoon. Since no one came to change my bandages, I struggled to sit up and carefully removed them myself before dressing my wounds again.

Just then, the door opened. Three guys walked into the nurse's office to treat their scrapes, and the one in front had a buzz cut.

The moment he saw me, he turned and gave the other two a knowing look. "Isn't this the guy everyone's been talking about lately? I can't believe he's into that sort of thing."

His eyes were filled with contempt. "How much do you charge? Do you need me to hook you up with someone?"

All three of them immediately burst into laughter.

"Watch your mouth and get lost!" I shot them a warning glare.

The guy with the buzz cut looked furious. "Who do you think you are? How dare you talk to me like that? Get him!"

He grabbed me by the wrists and held me down. My head started ringing as the other two came over and started kicking and punching me.

Just as I was about to lose hope, the door suddenly flew open. Esther dashed in and hurled the thermos at the buzz-cut guy's head.

"Stop! The dean will be here soon!"

The three of them ran off with their tails between their legs.

Esther turned around and leaned against the door, gasping for breath. The moment she looked at me, her usual gentle expression was replaced with fury.

"Gabriel! Do you really like causing trouble? You're already injured. Why did you have to pick a fight with those troublemakers?"

I stared at Esther, my heart aching, but I couldn't even get a word out.

We had known each other for five years, and this was what she thought of me? Or maybe she had never really known me at all.

Esther gradually calmed down and sat at the edge of the bed. "Since you're that desperate for my attention, I'll stay here and look after you. Happy?"

As she spoke, she opened a new roll of gauze and disinfectant before gently dressing my wounds.

For a moment, I was lost in thought.

In sophomore year, I accidentally cut my hand. Esther crouched in front of me and dressed my wounds, just like what she was doing now. She even cut a single Band-Aid into four pieces before she managed to get it on properly.

Esther stayed by my side for an entire month. She even wrote down the times for my IV drips in her notebook, down to the exact minute.

Back then, I really thought Esther meant everything to me.

"All done. Behave yourself next time. Stop causing so much trouble."

The light overhead fell across her face, and her expression suddenly turned icy. "By the way, could you leave the group chat? Lionel said it's annoying having to tag me when you're still in the chat."

She sounded casual, as if she were simply asking me for a small favor.

"Sure." A bitter smile tugged at my lips. I could no longer hold back my anger.

"If it's really that annoying, I'll quit the group chat. And it's over between us, Esther."

Sitting on the edge of the bed, Esther froze for a moment, as if she were trying to process what I had just said.

"I only asked you to leave the group chat, and now you're upset? Are you seriously breaking up with me over this? That's not something you can just joke about. Gabriel, are you even listening to me?"

The nurse's office fell silent for a few seconds. All we could hear was the faint hum of the fluorescent lights.

I didn't respond at all. I turned away, facing the wall, and pulled the sheets up to cover half my face. "Get out."

Esther scowled, as if I were nothing but a hassle. "Forget I said that earlier. You're clearly not thinking straight. I think you need some time to cool off."

Esther shut the door behind her. Her footsteps faded down the hallway until all I could hear was the wind.

Gabriel's POVThe woman raised her hand and pressed it against her chest, blood seeping through her fingers. She looked up at me, and I realized it was Esther.Esther had grown terribly thin, her cheekbones jutting out. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, but there was still a spark in them. She gazed at me, looking as if she wanted to say something. She then pulled her hand away from her chest. It was trembling, her fingertips slick with blood. Blood trickled between the gaps of her fingers, dripping onto the pages of my book. It soaked into the paper, spreading into a dark stain. Esther reached out to touch my face. Her fingers felt cool against my skin as they brushed lightly over my cheekbone. Her lips trembled as she struggled to speak. "Can you forgive me now?"She fixed her gaze on me as blood continued to drip onto the pages of my book. One drop. Then another. My tears fell onto the back of her hand, and her fingers twitched. "I forgave you a long time ago."A faint

Gabriel's POV"You didn't stand up for me," I said. "Not once.""I kept messaging in that group chat every day, but no one even bothered to reply. People judged me whenever I walked around campus. "After that shelf came crashing down on me in the equipment room, I couldn't even get up. Every second of it was hell. Did you ever stop to think about what I'd been through?"I stopped. The sun felt warm on my face. My eyes stung a little, but no tears fell. "I withdrew from school back home so I could be happy for once. I came here to start a new chapter. "I did all this for myself, not so you could come here and play victim in front of me." I pulled my hand free easily, and she made no move to hold on. "Esther." I finally glanced at her. "You should go home."I turned to leave. I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like someone lowering themselves to the ground. The wooden bench creaked once behind me. Then all I heard was the wind rust

Gabriel's POV"You know how easily embarrassed Gabriel gets. The whole school will be talking about this tomorrow. Have you thought about how he's supposed to face everyone after this?"Lily's voice was full of anger, but she didn't shout. Every word came through clearly. "You embarrassed him in front of so many people. And you call that love?"Esther's shoulders slumped. Lily's words seemed to have taken the last bit of strength out of her. She gulped hard and took a step back in silence. Lily didn't say anything either and turned to look at me. Her gaze searched mine, full of concern. Then she held out her hand to me, palm up, and waited. I walked up to her, placing my hand in hers. She took it and led me back to my dorm. I didn't even look back at Esther. It was quiet beneath the streetlight. She didn't run after me. But I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like Esther had sunk to her knees. But I didn't stop. Lily's hand was w

Gabriel's POVI got up, still holding that stone, and took a step back. The young women on shore were looking our way. One of them laughed, and another held up her phone to take a picture of us. Lily stepped in front of me, shielding me from them. She whispered in my ear, "If you're scared, just stick close to me. I can get you out of here. They wouldn't even notice."Lily turned sideways, angling her shoulder toward me, making just enough room for me to hide behind her. She kept her back to the people on the shore. I lowered my gaze to her shoulder and at her soft cotton shirt. She stood there as if nothing could ever bother her. I leaned forward, pressing my forehead against her shoulder blade. She then led me around the far side of the lake and took me back to the main walkway, using an unlit path. The moment the streetlights came back on, I looked up and uncurled my fingers. The stone was still warm in my palm. Just as I was about to say something, I spotted Esther in

Gabriel's POVLater, Lily and her family migrated to Cromosia. On the day they left, I hid behind the door and refused to come out. Lily stood outside and called my name twice. Mom even tried to convince me to come out and say goodbye to her, but I wouldn't budge. As soon as the door shut, I crouched behind the couch and cried for ages. I held my hot chocolate as we walked, with Lily right beside me. As a cold gust of wind swept in from the street corner, she pulled up her hood and shot me a grin. "If you ever need help, just let me know," she said. "You don't even know anyone here. At least you have me."I replied, "Sure."Lily did keep her promise. She showed up every day with breakfast in hand, waiting downstairs so we could walk to class together. Then she would head to the library and save me a seat by the window. Lily remembered that I didn't like iced drinks, so she always got me something warm instead. When the days got colder, she started bringing an extra jacket

Third-Person POVEsther closed her eyes and said, "I have to find Gabriel."Ethan fell silent for a long time. Finally, he sighed, pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket, and placed it on the bedside table. "We've looked into it. Gabriel's studying at Lembin College in Cromosia. We reached out to the school while you were in the hospital. A spot just opened up in the exchange program, and they've approved your application."Esther turned to look at the piece of paper. There were a few lines of Cromosian on it, with the school's red seal at the bottom. Beside it was a photo, printed in low resolution. Gabriel stood at the entrance of a red-brick building, with a backpack on his back, his head turned toward someone next to him as he spoke. Esther stared at the photo for a very long time. Gabriel looked different. Sure, he had lost some weight, but he looked happier. She had seen his face from that angle every day over the past three years, but she had never seen him smile
