Chapter 3

Author: Mimi Winterrest
The doors to the operating room swung open, and I paused outside for one final check.

The doctor looked at me, clearly hesitant.

"Mr. Garrett, the anesthesiologist is ready. But…"

"But what?"

"Your blood tests show that the venom has caused severe coagulopathy and impaired kidney function. The surgery carries a high risk, and you'll need dialysis for some time afterward.

"If we can't get the infection under control, you may also need a second procedure to remove the infected tissue."

I nodded calmly. "I understand."

The doctor looked surprised. "Are you sure you don't want to wait for your family?"

"No," I said, signing my name on the surgical consent form. "I'm not waiting."

As the nurse wheeled me farther down the hall, the doors to the operating room slowly closed behind me.

Just before the anesthesia took effect, I faintly heard my phone vibrate.

The nurse picked it up for me.

It was a message from Astrid.

"The helicopter has taken off. It should be there in about 40 minutes.

"Andre, don't worry. I'll be here soon."

I stared at those two messages for a long time, finally realizing that the people who would truly come running when I needed them most had been there all along.

Five years ago, I had been the one who pushed them away for Nicole.

The anesthetic began to enter my bloodstream. As consciousness began to fade, I found myself thinking back to our wedding day.

Nicole had taken my hand and sworn in front of all our family and friends.

"Andre Garrett is the only man I will ever call my husband," she had said. "Through sickness and health, for richer or poorer, I'll stay by his side for the rest of my life."

Dad had sat stiffly at the head table that day, his face cold and unreadable. He hadn't offered a single word of congratulations. And Astrid hadn't even shown up.

After the wedding, I had asked Nicole, "Do you think you'll ever regret marrying me?"

She looked up and kissed me gently on the cheek.

"The only thing I could ever regret is that I didn't meet you sooner."

Back then, I had believed her without question.

So, even after Conrad came back, I kept telling myself that he was simply someone from her past.

But I was different. I was her husband.

Yet, I learned the hard way that even a husband could be replaced.

…

The surgery lasted six hours.

When I woke, it was already deep into the night.

A sharp, agonizing pain shot through my right leg, so intense that I could barely breathe.

I instinctively tried to lift my leg, only to find nothing beneath the blanket.

That was when it finally sank in.

My right leg was really gone.

The room was silent, a telltale sign that Nicole hadn't been here.

On the bedside table sat a bouquet of lilies and a card that read, "Take care of yourself and don't overthink things."

It was from Nicole.

I stared at the card, and a wry smile spread across my face.

I'd lost a leg, and she hadn't even waited outside the operating room. I'd almost died, and all she'd done was send me a bouquet of flowers.

Conrad, on the other hand, had only been bitten by a snake. Yet he'd received the antivenom, a stretcher, a satellite phone, and Nicole's company throughout the entire night.

When the nurse came in to change my dressing, she couldn't help whispering, "Mr. Garrett, your wife really cares about Mr. Hayes.

"I heard his heart started acting up again tonight, and Dr. Sterling has been by his side the whole time. She hasn't even eaten.

"Are you two…"

She trailed off when she realized she'd overstepped, then quickly fell silent.

"No," I said quietly. "We won't be husband and wife for much longer."

The nurse froze for a moment and didn't dare ask anything else.

I picked up my phone and sent Astrid one final message.

"Is the divorce agreement ready?"

"It's ready," she replied almost instantly. "I've also frozen all of the Garrett family's shares and investments in Sterling Hospital.

"I'll come to the hospital tomorrow and pick you up."

I stared at her message, then slowly closed my eyes.

The case against Conrad was resolved quickly. He had not only falsified medical records and exploited Nicole's guilt to manipulate her into giving him special treatment for years, but was also suspected of tampering with the mountain rescue team's information. Worse still, he had obtained an unapproved antivenom through a private clinic. Before the hike, he'd deliberately released a particularly venomous snake near the campsite. He knew there were snakes in the mountain. He was also aware that both Nicole and I exercised regularly, but I was the only one who went hiking outdoors on a regular basis. He had even looked into my medical history and knew I had no underlying heart or lung conditions. In fact, he'd calculated exactly how Nicole would react when the time came to choose between us. …As for Nicole, she was now under investigation. "Dr. Sterling, the regulators have confirmed irregularities in the hospital's procurement records for the antivenom," William said,

Nicole's hand slowly fell to her side. She wanted to explain, but every explanation felt painfully inadequate. Outside the hospital room, I could hear Astrid speaking with the lawyers. "The divorce petition has been filed, and Garrett Group's withdrawal process is complete," she said. "There's one more thing. We need to reassess ownership of the hospital's core medical equipment purchased with our funds."Nicole's head snapped up. "Andre, you're really taking all the equipment back?""That equipment belongs to our family anyway," Astrid interrupted coldly. "We only lent it to your hospital."Nicole turned to me. "Do you have any idea how many patients will be affected if you take all that equipment away?""I know.""And you're still going to do it?""Of course," I said evenly. "You can continue being the doctor who saves lives, but you can't take my family's money to save other people while leaving my life in someone else's hands."I'm not doing this to get revenge. I'm

Just then, sirens sounded outside the hospital room. Several police officers walked in. "Mr. Hayes, we've received a report alleging that you deliberately tampered with emergency communication equipment, falsified medical information, and intentionally caused harm."We need you to come with us."The color drained from Conrad's face. He turned to Nicole, as though she were the last person who could save him. "Nicole, please," he begged. "You have to help me. You said you'd protect me no matter what happened."But Nicole stood where she was, unmoving. "Conrad, stop lying to me," she finally said after a long silence. As the police led Conrad away, he passed my bedside. He suddenly stopped, lowered his voice, and let out a quiet chuckle. "Andre, you think you've won just because you're getting a divorce?" he taunted. "Nicole still loves me more than anyone. Even if I go to prison, she'll never forget me.""Then I hope the two of you will always love each other," I replie

"Dr. Sterling," Astrid said evenly. "If Mr. Hayes really has a serious heart condition, then let him get tested right now."If he doesn't, then we can talk about his fabricated medical records, his interference with the rescue operation, and the fact that he lied about his condition."Conrad's head snapped up. "You can't accuse me of something like that!"Astrid smiled. "Accuse you?" She spread another set of documents across the table. "These are the communication records provided by the mountain rescue company."After Mr. Hayes was bitten by the snake, he used your phone to send a message to the rescue team."Nicole's eyes narrowed. "What message?"Astrid slid the record toward her. "The injured patient, Andre Garrett, has already been taken toward the north slope by the others in his group. Please prioritize Conrad Hayes."Nicole stared at the message, the color slowly draining from her face. "I didn't send that," she whispered. "But it was sent from your phone,"

As I grew lost in thought, the door suddenly opened. Conrad walked in on crutches. He was dressed in loose white clothes, his face pale. Around his wrist was a bracelet Nicole had given him. "Mr. Garrett." He lingered in the doorway for a moment before speaking. "Can I talk to you?""No," Astrid replied bluntly. Conrad stiffened. "Ms. Garrett, I just wanted to apologize to Andre.""Who do you think you are to act like you're close to him?" Astrid cut him off. "Get out."Conrad clenched his jaw, his expression turning ashen. "I know you hate me because of the antivenom, but I swear I never thought things would turn out this way."Nicole told me you were strong and healthy, and that you'd be able to hold on until the rescue team arrived. If I'd known you were going to lose your leg, I never would have…""Never would have what?" I asked, looking at him. "Taken the antivenom?"Conrad froze. "I didn't take it from you," he argued. "Nicole made the decision to give it to me

Silence enveloped the room. After a moment, Nicole turned and walked out. But just as she reached the door, she suddenly stopped in her tracks. "Andre," she began. "I'll come back to see you once you've calmed down."I didn't respond. "You'd better not come back," Astrid called out as she watched her leave. Nicole didn't look back. The moment the door closed behind her, I finally felt the weight I'd been carrying for five long years begin to lift. But I had no idea the real trouble was only just beginning. …The very next morning, news of Sterling Hospital's financial crisis made headlines across the business news. Garrett Group had pulled all of its investments and frozen the related shares. Three of Sterling Hospital's branch expansions were suspended, while multiple high-value medical equipment contracts were forced to a halt. At the press conference, reporters crowded around Nicole, thrusting their microphones toward her. "Dr. Sterling, is the Garrett Group's
