Chapter 1

Almost everyone gathered around Monica Hudson. They were checking her injuries and soothing her with gentle voices.

Meanwhile, I sat alone off to the side. I was accompanied only by a healer who wasn't particularly skilled.

Monica looked at me through her tears and raised a hand. She was trying to push Leo Blackwood toward me.

"Leo, I don't mind letting Winnie go first. Take her with you."

Perhaps the movement pulled at her wounds. Monica hissed in pain and furrowed her brows.

Leo immediately bent down and applied all the ointment to her scrapes. "Winnie's a Beta. She's always been strong and healthy. You don't need to worry about her."

Dad looked at me with disappointment. "Winnie, you're her elder sister. It's bad enough that you failed to protect Monica. But to compete with her for attention at a time like this? I'm truly disappointed in you."

I opened my mouth. I wanted to tell them that Monica had merely tripped over something and suffered a few minor scrapes.

I'd taken a beam to the back while protecting her. My bones were broken, and I couldn't even stand.

But before I could speak, another bout of Monica's sobbing interrupted me.

Leo and Dad exchanged a glance before carrying her toward the ambulance.

The healer Serene beside me began examining my injuries. She gently peeled back my collar and listened to my heartbeat through a stethoscope.

My burned skin had fused with my clothing. The moment she touched it, pain shot through me and made my entire body tremble.

Serene's expression changed instantly. She called out to Leo. "Captain, she's breathing heavily, and she has broken ribs pressing directly against her heart!

Leo's expression changed. He instinctively glanced at me. Dad stepped in front of him and blocked his path. "Leo, this healer knows Winnie. She's definitely helping her lie. Besides, Winnie just came out of a fire. Of course she's breathing heavily."

Serene raised her voice anxiously. "That's not true! I've only met Winnie once. Her injuries really are severe!"

Dad took a step back. His expression turned cold again as he looked at me. "Winnie, you're a warrior. You know how to protect yourself. You're clearly only slightly injured, yet you're pretending to be seriously hurt. You just want us to pay attention to you, don't you?

"Monica is merely an Omega. She's not as agile as you. Instead of protecting her, you're competing with her for attention at a time like this!"

I stared at Dad and suddenly felt like laughing. In his mind, even if I really was seriously injured, it could only be because I'd deliberately hurt myself to compete for his affection.

Summoning every ounce of strength I had, I raised a hand and pointed at my chest. I then pointed at Monica.

I'd inhaled too much smoke, and my throat was too damaged for me to speak. I wanted to use our mind-link connection to tell Dad why I'd been injured.

That's when I suddenly recalled that ever since Monica's coming-of-age ceremony last month, Dad had severed our mind-link connection because I'd opposed his decision to give her the necklace Mom had left behind.

The words 'I was injured while protecting Monica' remained trapped in my mind. I swallowed them along with the blood rising in my throat.

Serene couldn't hold back any longer. "Alpha, I'm really not lying to you!"

Dad's expression darkened. He thought Serene was challenging his authority. "I've been an Alpha for over thirty years, and this is the first time anyone has dared defy me.

"Winnie is fully conscious right now. She even has the strength to argue. Besides, she brought this upon herself."

The rescue crew began urging him to hurry. "Alpha, we can't wait any longer. The injured have already been left waiting too long."

I tried to reach Leo through our mind-link connection, hoping he would leave the medicine behind.

At least then, I might be able to hold on a little longer.

After receiving my message, Leo glanced at the remaining medicine in his hand. He then looked at Monica beside him. He hesitated.

Just as he was about to toss the medicine to me, Monica suddenly grabbed his hand and spoke weakly. "Leo, I'm in so much pain."

With that, she collapsed into his arms.

Leo's face turned pale. "Enough, Winnie! Your injuries aren't serious. Having a healer here with you is more than enough. Monica can't tolerate pain like you can. She needs the medicine more than you do.

"And stop using our mind-link connection to distract me. I'll come back for you right after we've sent her to the healer's den."

With that, he blocked our mind-link connection.

Dad grew anxious too and shouted at me. "Winnie, you're my daughter and the pride of this pack. Monica's parents died fighting for the pack. I owe it to them to protect her."

They grew smaller and smaller in my field of vision until they disappeared completely.

The ambulance was gone.

Serene carefully laid me flat on the ground and began examining my injuries.

It wasn't long before she discovered the fragments of building debris embedded in my body.

I opened my eyes slightly. Blood and mud covered me from head to toe. Their colors were indistinguishable beneath the grime.

I had multiple bleeding wounds. There was so much blood. They simply hadn't bothered to look closely enough to notice.

I'd never seen Dad and Leo look like this before. They sat beside my hospital bed and stared at my motionless body with looks of regret on their faces.Dad held my hand tightly while calling my name.It had been so long since I'd heard him speak to me in such a gentle voice.Unfortunately, no matter how many times he called my name now, I would never respond with the same enthusiasm I'd shown him as a pup.Leo gently ruffled my hair and reminisced about our past together. He thought I'd somehow hear him if he talked long enough. "Winnie, the truth is finally out. It was my fault. I had so many opportunities to save you, but I failed to take even one of them."They spent hours talking beside my bed. They kept vigil over me throughout the night. The following day, Dad began making arrangements for my funeral. The funeral was simple, and it was attended by only a few people close to me.Leo slumped beside my body while repeating my name over and over.Dad, the stern and unyield

Dad paused and turned to face Monica in confusion. "What is it?"Monica's expression turned tense. She stammered, "T-Things were pretty bad when it happened. If you watch the footage, it'll only upset you more. Maybe you shouldn't watch it."Leo sneered as if he'd seen through her. "Monica, she's your elder sister. Don't you even care about her? Don't you want to know why Winnie's injuries were so severe that she died before the ambulance could reach her?"Monica was left speechless.Dad turned on the laptop and watched the entire surveillance footage. The footage clearly showed Monica ignoring my warnings and crossing the border without permission. Fooling around, she'd set off fireworks. She'd accidentally set fire to the buildings and vegetation along the border. To protect Monica, I'd taken the full impact of a falling beam. When the footage ended, the ward fell completely silent.Monica, in particular, was frozen in place. She couldn't even utter a single word.Dad looked

Not long after, the witch arrived at the ward. She gently pressed her fingertips against my forehead and slowly probed my body with her mind.A moment later, she exited the ward with a grave expression and looked at the two werewolves waiting in the hallway. "Alpha, Winnie was indeed poisoned by silver. Her wolf had been damaged, and she couldn't have healed in such a short period of time."Dad and Leo froze at the same time.Dad's eyes went wide, and his body stiffened slightly. He'd always believed that my claims about being injured at the border were nothing but lies.Still, he'd had some doubts because my injuries hadn't looked particularly serious on the surface. The witch continued speaking. "On top of that, Winnie suffered severe internal injuries. It looks like she was struck by an object. I recommend that you investigate exactly what happened."Dad and Leo glanced solemnly into the ward I was in before looking at each other. They then headed to Monica's ward. When they

There was a brief silence on the other end of the call.Dad's steady voice had stopped abruptly. A moment later, the sound of something hitting the ground came through. When he spoke again, his voice was filled with disbelief. "Say that again. What happened to Winnie?"Leo lowered his gaze to my cold, lifeless body before repeating himself. "Winnie is dead. By the time we arrived, she'd already lost all vital signs. Her internal injuries were too severe. She didn't survive long enough for us to rescue her."Silence lingered on the other end for a long time before Dad finally spoke again. He sounded utterly drained. "Bring Winnie back immediately."The walkie-talkie call ended.Leo held me tightly in his arms and remained silent for a long time.I watched as tears fell one after another onto my body. He was crying in secret.Only when the healer urged him to move did Leo finally come back to his senses. He carefully lifted me onto a stretcher. He then helped the healer carry me

My soul separated from my body. I floated midair as I watched Leo kneeling before my corpse with a blank expression. His hand hovered under my nose. It was trembling violently. His eyes were filled with terror, and he couldn't believe I had stopped breathing. He called my name over and over. He even sounded angry. "Winnie, are you pretending to be dead just to get a reaction out of me? Can you stop acting for once? Alpha and I don't have the patience to keep indulging you!"When I didn't move, he pressed his fingertips desperately against the side of my neck. He was trying in vain to find a pulse. His tone sounded stern, but his voice trembled. "Stop messing around, Winnie! Wake up!"I wanted to tell him that I couldn't wake up anymore, but I couldn't make a sound. All I could do was watch him break down and scream in anguish. The werewolf who had once promised to protect me for the rest of my life was now lying beside me in ruins.Leo abruptly turned around and shouted for a dif

The voice coming through the walkie-talkie seemed to grow fainter and fainter, while everything before my eyes became increasingly blurry.I could no longer feel any physical pain. Gradually, I lost all sensation.I thought I could hear Dad's faint voice coming through the walkie-talkie. "Winnie, can you hear me? The ambulance will be there in three minutes. You'll be safe soon."He continued, "Don't blame me for what I did. I believe you can understand why I had to do it. I'll be waiting for you to come back."As I listened to Dad's voice, I recalled how he'd held me after Mom died and promised that from then on, we would always have each other.Later, he brought Monica home, and I had to share half of his affection with her. At first, it was a toy. Later, it was a bag of snacks. Eventually, it became a piece of jewelry and even an entire room.Whenever I showed the slightest sign of dissatisfaction, Dad accused me of competing with Monica for his affection. But I wasn't.
