Camilla’s POV

I stormed out of Jax Maddox’s Condo with purpose. Not tears. Not rage. Just perfectly timed fury. My heels clicked across the marble floor, echoing just enough to draw glances from his maids.

I was unbothered. Let them stare.

The moment I turned the corner and the hallway was empty, I slowed down. Smoothed a hand down my hip. Took a deep breath. Then I reached into the inner seam of my blazer and pulled out the sleek little recorder I had clipped between the lining and the silk blouse beneath.

A red light blinked back at me. Still running.

“Got you,” I whispered, smiling as I pressed stop. “Next time, don’t mess with me.”

I walked straight past the elevators and out the front entrance, already dialing a number on my phone.

“Val,” I said when she picked up. “How do you feel about a scandal?”

There was a pause, then a slow chuckle. “Camilla Devereaux. What have you done this time?”

“Nothing… yet.” I smiled into the phone. “But I’ve got something that’ll make your inbox ex

Riley’s POVThe headline slapped me harder than my morning coffee ever could.“Jax Maddox Refuses Responsibility for Unborn Child — ‘I Never Wanted a Kid,’ Says Tennis Star.”—Exclusive by ShowBuzz NewsI stared at the words, my heart stuttering in disbelief. Below the headline was a still frame, a picture of Camilla’s face twisted just enough to look heartbreakingly vulnerable, like a woman scorned by the man who left her high and dry.But it was the quote that did it.“I never wanted a kid. I just need to be sure. The procedure is not that dangerous.”Cold and cutting. Out of context, it sounded like something monstrous. And I knew, in the pit of my stomach, it wasn’t the full story. My thumb hovered over the screen as I reread the article. It was detailed. Almost too detailed. The reporter cited a “private conversation” and “exclusive audio,” painting Jax as a man willing to pressure his ex into dangerous tests just to dodge accountability. My blood boiled. Not because I liked the

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   43: DNA

Jax’s POVCamilla sat across from me on the edge of the sleek couch in my condo, sipping mineral water like she hadn’t just dropped a nuclear bomb into my life some days ago. Her perfectly manicured nails tapped the side of the glass, slow and rhythmic, like she was waiting for an applause.“So,” I said, folding my arms as I leaned against the kitchen counter. “I’ve been thinking.”Her eyes flicked up, lips already curling into that smile. The one she used when she thought she had the upper hand.“Dangerous habit for you,” she said lightly, crossing her legs. “What’s on that overthinking brain of yours?”I ignored the jab. “I want a prenatal DNA test.”She blinked, then she laughed. It wasn’t a little chuckle or a nervous giggle—it was the kind of loud, full-bodied laugh that echoed through the room and made my jaw clench.“You’re serious?” She finally asked, wiping the corner of her eye like I’d just told the best joke of the year.“I wouldn’t have said it if I wasn’t.”The laughter

Stranger’s POV Her hand slid down my spine, warm and slow, like she was branding me with her touch alone. Camilla always touched me like she owned me, she never asked, never hesitated.I lay back on the silk sheets, letting her run her fingers across my ribs, my waist, like I was some piece of art she’d paid too much for and didn’t want to let go of.“You’re quiet,” she whispered, her wet lips brushing my ear. “That usually means you’re thinking. About what?”I kept my expression unreadable. “Just… wondering if this plan of yours will actually work.”Her breath hitched with a little laugh. “It’ll work,” she said like she was reassuring herself more than me. “Of course it will. The plan is foolproof.”“Foolproof,” I echoed, reaching lazily for my wine glass. “And what if it’s not?”Camilla propped herself on one elbow, looking down at me with those glassy, too-bright eyes. “Why wouldn’t it be? I know Jax. I know how to keep him tangled long enough to get what we want.”We.Cute.I sw

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   41: Jax says thanks?

Jax’s POV“What am I doing?”The office was too quiet for a Tuesday morning. Not that it was ever loud—but today it had that odd, pressurized silence that made every movement sound louder. The shuffle of papers. The low hum of the AC. The click of my pen tapping uselessly against the surface of my desk.I hadn’t even realized I’d been staring at my computer screen for five straight minutes until the cursor blinked again and again, waiting for me to start typing.I ran a hand down my face and exhaled.Riley had stayed late last night—without being pressured—wrapping up the budget report for that last-minute pitch I’d thrown at her. I didn’t expect her to finish it. Hell, I hadn’t even meant to dump it on her, not really. It just… slipped out. One of those reactive things I did when I was overwhelmed and didn’t want to admit it.And she’d done it. Delivered it on my desk at 9:03 PM sharp, barely looking at me as she handed it over and left. That should’ve been the end of it. But now I c

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   40: A little problem

Riley’s POVSome days, silence was a gift. But this morning? It was pure gold. For one, no one had barged into my office with an emergency. No urgent emails. No passive-aggressive texts from Caleb. And Jax hadn’t so much as looked at me since the Camilla incident. I wasn’t sure if I should be grateful or concerned.I leaned back in my chair, stretching slightly as I typed out one final sentence on a proposal I’d been working on. The office was still humming quietly, and for a few blessed minutes, I felt like maybe—just maybe—I could breathe. Then the door opened. No knock. No warning. Just perfume. The kind that wrapped around your throat like a silk noose. Musky. Sweet. Way too expensive.I looked up—and everything in me went still. Camilia Devereaux. She stepped in like she owned the place, her heels clicking against the floor like gunshots. She had a coffee in one hand and a smirk on her face.“Hi,” I said, slowly straightening. “Can I help you?”She tilted her head, letting out a
