Haylee's POV

I cover my head with my hands, massaging my temples and attempting to rub out the tension headache that’s been growing since our nice little talk with Arielle. The medical ward is quiet now, monitors beeping gently, my sleeping boys breathing faintly.

“You look like you need it more than I do,” Elara says, coming into the room with a steaming mug of herbal tea.

"Thanks," I mutter, and take the cup thankfully. Dorst It warms my palms a little. "Any changes?"

Arielle's POVMy head is throbbing under the harsh lights of the medical ward, and I can’t tell if it’s the way Haylee Wolf has propped herself against the doorframe that makes it throb even more. I never thought I'd see her again so soon, not with Aiden lurking protectively behind her. The perfect little reunion.“Arielle,” Aiden says, evenly, in a tone of voice that is neutral. "How are you feeling?"“Better,” I get out, my throat rough from my performance the day before. The cuts and bruises that parade over my body are real, but not served to me quite as I’ve professed."Good enough to talk?" Will asks, joining the group uninvited into the room. She eyes me with a clinical detachment, searching for my soft spot. She’s even more intimidating than I remember back when Aiden used to talk about her years before.I nod, shifting against the pillows, grimacing with intention. "I didn't think I would see you around here," I tell HAYLEE—the first one to really come out of my mouth since I

Aiden's POVI am acutely aware the Haylee is behind me as we make our way up the grand staircase. Six years of imagining her walking these halls again, and now she was here—not as my recovered mate, but as a reluctant soldier in a mission to save our offspring.“This place is gigantic,” Lior whispers to his brother, his young face a picture of awe and wonder as we walk by masterpiece and ancient wolf object.Dad, do you just live here alone? Kael inquires, his usual inquisitiveness overcoming his weariness momentarily.“Not on my own,” I say, looking down at my son. "The pack house houses a lot of wolves—my beta and guards with families live in the east wing, there is always warriors on patrolling duty."“But no Luna,” Haylee murmurs, her words more weighty than the twins can comprehend. We arrive at the Luna suite and I pause before I turn the knob. “Kept it maintained,” I say, now suddenly self-conscious. “But if you would like something different —”“This is ok,” Haylee cuts in, so

Aiden's POV Arielle in my arms is heavy, a weight I never thought to carry again. Six years ago I would have grown mountains in order to guard her. Now every instinct tells me to stay away, even as I help her—saved her—body through the forest."Are we almost there?" she murmurs, her breath hot on my neck.“Another quarter mile,” I answer, trying to keep my tone even. I shift my hold, keeping it respectful while still being close to her.Up ahead, Haylee strides next to the twins, her back stiff and shoulders hunched. I know she can't stand this—can't stand seeing this, seeing Arielle in my arms, the memories it must bring up. But she’s also smart enough to recognize the strategic advantage of keeping potential enemies close, particularly those with dirt on the Brotherhood. You've become manlier," Arielle whispers, her delicate fingers brushing against my chest in a way that if someone was watching us wouldn't notice. "Being Alpha suits you."I do not engage with its blatant manipulat

Haylee's POVI hold Lior close to my chest, his little body shivering at whatever had taken hold of him a second ago. The eerie glow is gone from his features now and the brown of his eyes only holds confusion for the two of us."What just happened?" “Shhh,” I say, brushing his thick dark hair off his forehead.Elara darts around the room, reinforcing the barriers with fresh herbs and lines of salt. “The ritual succeeded,” she says, her voice strained with focus. “But it also became a temporary conduit — a link that allowed … something … to speak through him.Aiden crouches next to us, his hand soft against Lior’s back. "Hey, buddy. How are you feeling?"Lior blinks sleepy-eyed at his father — the man he’s only aware of for days but already seems to sense is reliable. “My arm doesn’t ache like it did,” he mutters, glancing to his wrist, where the spiral has become nothing but a faint line.“That’s good,” I say, feeling an intense rush of relief. "That's very good."“We need to get the

Haylee's POVI gaze at the weird spiral etching on Lior’s wrist and panic scratches at my throat. My fingertips sear as they rest on my son’s skin, his heat unnatural for his small frame."What is this?" I look between Aiden and Elara. "Who would mark my child?"While she scours through her medical bag, I look over at Aiden and see that his expression is now rigid with a mixture of controlled fury. "Xavier did this, right?"“The evidence leads that way,” he says, whispering to avoid waking the twins. “The timing, the secrecy, this being written directly after he brought in a ‘specialist’. ""But why?" I push, arguing with myself, trying to make the man I’ve known for years fit with someone who could make a conscious decision to hurt a child — my child. "What does he have to gain from keeping Lior sicker?"Aiden does not get a chance to reply before Elara has a tiny gasp. She holds an old leather-bound book, its pages turned yellow with age. “Here,” she says, pointing at a faded pictur

Aiden's POVI see the darkness in Haylee's eyes deepen when she hangs up from Xavier. Her hands are shaking a little, but she looks determined, that stubborn set to her jaw that I’ve always admired — even when that stubbornness was against me.“He’s lying,” I say, and my voice is so sure that it even surprises me. "The timing is too perfect."Haylee glances up, her eyes more piercing. "What do you mean?""Think about it. Lior suddenly has new complaints. An enigmatic medic sneaks up behind you. Then followed a handy raid on the frontier demanding an immediate return of you? I move in closer, wary not to press her. “It’s manipulation, pure and simple.”“You don’t know Xavier,” she replies, but she still sounds unsure."I know men who crave power." My mind flits to my own father, his cutthroat climb to Alpha. “And I know what they are capable of when they feel threatened.”Conflict fills every step as Haylee paces back and forth in the cramped living room. “But why would he be spooked?

Haylee's POVAIden talking to the healer, and next thing I know I'm pulling myself together. The bond scar pulses under my sweater, after a sleep that spanned years. My wolfpaces impatiently under my skin, begging me for something I can't — won't — give him.“Elara says they’re stable,” Aiden shares with him before hanging up. “No change so far, but she wasn’t expecting immediate results.”Relief washes through me. "When's the next treatment?"“Dawn,” he says, glancing at his watch. "About five hours from now. We should try to rest."I could not even say that I imagined lying down again in my bed, where I was too uncomfortably conscious of the sensation of falling, nor yet to my desk, from which horsehair post a spectral persuasion of cascading seemed to dangle as before my eyes, nor yet to the floor, which I had only just acquired the habit of using to rest my head and brush against sheets for something that breathed differently from myself about my scalp. "I'll take the couch.""Hay

Haylee's POVI wake and I am very warm, surrounded by a scent that is like a cocoon. There’s one brief, disorienting moment when time dissolves, and I am in our bedroom at the pack house, six years and a lifetime ago. Then the presence smashes into me. I'm in Aiden's cabin. In his bed. And the warmth beside me...I sit up straight, my heart slamming in my chest. Aiden is asleep on top of the covers, fully dressed with a respectful gap between us that somehow feels more intimate than if he’d been pressed up against me."What are you doing?" “Well, I asked him to stay,” I whisper. He stirs at the sound of my voice, blinks open his eyes. Realization crosses his face, and then worry.“You were having bad dreams,” he says, voice thick with sleep. "You asked me to stay."Heat rises to my cheeks. "I didn't mean in my bed.""That's for your bed," he corrects, sitting up and raking a hand through his sleep-ruffled hair. “And you apparently slept better.”I wish to argue, to deny his comfort, b
