Chapter 1

Penulis: Lexie L
After discovering that Jude Pearson was still in love with my stepsister Thalia Yates, I had already made up my mind to disappear from their lives. I reached out to my friend, Naomi Clarke, and started putting together a flawless fake-death plan.

Just as we were finalizing the details, I caught the familiar scent of disinfectant—and there he was, Jude, walking in with a bouquet of roses.

He wrapped his arms around me from behind and nuzzled affectionately, asking, "What are you working on?"

"A few things for my research paper," I replied casually.

"Don't worry about your paper, honey. I've got you," Jude said as he gently massaged my shoulders like it was the most natural thing in the world.

For seven years, I had been the woman everyone envied. After all, he was the kind of man who seemed disinterested in everything. He gave up his right to inherit his family business, pursued medicine with unwavering focus, and eventually became the chief clinical advisor for the surgical society.

He poured himself into medical research and work for years, never seen with another woman. And yet somehow, he claimed to have fallen for me at first sight.

Someone who had never been in a relationship awkwardly pursued me for six months, and I thought this was my redemption after being betrayed. Now I realized that this was just another abyss built on lies.

"There's some data in the paper that still needs refining," I said with a smile, my eyes drifting toward the collar of his shirt, where the top button was left undone.

Due to his hospital habits, he always handled everything meticulously. He would button everything up to the very last button before being satisfied. He noticed my gaze, and his expression flickered with unease before he straightened his clothes.

"There was an emergency surgery at the hospital. I was in such a rush, I must've missed it."

I held the roses without saying anything. I knew this flower shop very well because every time he needed to "work overtime", he would buy me flowers from it. After checking, I discovered this shop was incredibly far from the hospital. However, it was very close to Thalia's house.

Jude pulled me close again and said, "You shouldn't attend tomorrow's academic research conference. You've been too busy lately. You should get some rest."

"But my paper presentation—"

He interrupted me. "There will be plenty of conference opportunities. Let me help you refine the details before you present them, okay?"

I pressed my lips together without responding.

Thalia, he, and I had all graduated from the same medical school. After graduation, he was busy with work and research every day, so I voluntarily gave up my research institute position to help him. Thalia took my place and entered the research institute instead.

This conference brought together medical professors and healthcare company CEOs. I suspected that my research might threaten Thalia's path.

Jude studied my expression and kissed my forehead. "The day after tomorrow is our wedding anniversary. I'll spend the entire day with you then."

"Okay," I agreed with a smile, and only then did he relax.

That evening, I turned on the computer, planning to finish my research before leaving. That was when I accidentally noticed one of Jude's folders. I had never pried into his things before, but now things were different—everything about him made me suspicious.

The folder was password-protected. I typed in Thalia's birthday, and it unlocked instantly.

Inside were rows of files and detailed memos, including photos of Thalia from high school, college and her wedding. There were even pregnancy reports, recorded with pregnancy precautions and care instructions. A small line read, "I'll treat this as if it were my own child."

My hands trembled slightly as I kept scrolling down. At the bottom of the documents was an invitation from Herlioth Business School. Next to it, he had written, "For Thalia's heart condition, I must go into medicine."

I closed my eyes, and the tears came silently. So, Jude wasn't uninterested in everything after all. He had simply given his whole heart to someone else.

In that moment, I completely gave up on our seven-year marriage.

Jude crumbled instantly. "I'll do anything you want, as long as you can forgive me!" I said, "You never loved me, did you? Our marriage was a lie from the very beginning!"He panicked, scrambling to explain. "No! No, it wasn't like that! I was just stupid. I didn't realize that I've always loved you… It's always been you!"I was getting a headache from his shouting, and Thalia suddenly went crazy when she heard those words. She snapped, "It's all your fault, you filthy bitch! You ruined everything!"Then, she sprang up from the floor, grabbed a vase off the side table, and hurled it at me with all her strength. Lucas instantly pulled me into his arms.Jude reacted just as quickly, stepping forward to shield us. The vase shattered, and the fragments cut his forehead. Thalia looked at him in shock.Jude's head was bleeding as he said coldly to her, "Enough! From this moment on, I never want to see you again. Get out of my life." It was the first time she had ever seen him

Lucas burst into the room, and his face darkened the moment he saw the scratch on my arm. Then, he gently examined my wound. Thalia watched our interaction and pointed at me, screaming, "Wow! That didn't take long. You filthy bitch, you already found yourself another man! I knew it! You never really cared about Jude. Always playing the victim for sympathy, but the truth is you're just a bitch who can't survive without a man!"Lucas frowned. "You better watch your mouth."I stepped in front of him. This was still a hospital, and hitting a pregnant woman wouldn't end well for anyone. Just then, Jude came running through the door. His eyes were red, fixed on me like he couldn't believe what he was seeing."Lyra..." His voice cracked, raw and breathless. "You're alive... Thank goodness. I knew it… I knew you weren't dead!"He walked over excitedly, looking like he wanted to embrace me. However, Lucas stepped in front of me with a cold expression. Only then did Jude notice his prese

That morning, the news reported that Jude had officially severed ties with his family. Ever since my disappearance, he had spent every day searching for me. His mother, Helena Roberts, had been pressuring him to return to the family business after he lost his medical job.Instead, Jude cut all ties with his family and planned to leave the place for good. More than once, he appeared on camera expressing how much he missed me. He stood before the cameras with red-rimmed eyes and a face full of despair, declaring, "My beloved Lyra isn't dead! She can't be! I'll find her. She's my only wife!"I took a sip of my coffee calmly, not feeling anything. Jude had never loved me this deeply before, and I never expected that my "death" was required to awaken his love. Nonetheless, I no longer needed anyone's love because I had every reason to love myself. Based on my dedication and work ethic, I was quickly promoted at the hospital. At the same time, I didn't give up my research in regener

There was no time to think, and I immediately threw myself into work. Massive numbers of injured victims were being unloaded from ambulances, and chaotic emergency scenes filled the entire hospital. My head was buzzing. I had only been officially on the job for a few months and wasn't exactly rich in experience. However, hearing the screams of the injured all around me, I knew I couldn't afford to panic.I stayed calm, quickly assessing patients and helping with triage so that the most critical cases could be treated first. The ordeal lasted a day and night. By then, my body was running on fumes, but I had only one thought on my mind—to save as many lives as possible. With my help, the hospital finally returned to order. While I was kneeling on the ground giving emergency care to a patient, sweat blurred my vision."Help me wipe my sweat." A colleague had been assisting me the whole time, so I called out without even thinking. The next second, a man in a suit used a tissue to

"Ms. Thalia Yates from the Regenerative Medicine Research Institute has been exposed for academic plagiarism, with multiple medical institutions demanding over 100 million in damages." I sipped my coffee while listening to the morning news. Thalia's research had been exposed as plagiarized and fabricated. As a result, all her previous awards were revoked, and multiple institutions were jointly suing her.She had spent all of our family's money, but it still wasn't enough to cover the compensation. The ex-fiancé she had stolen from me dumped her without hesitation. Dad was furious over the disgrace she brought to the family and kicked her out of the house. All of this had been a parting gift I left her before faking my death. I had always wondered how Thalia, with her academic performance, could have created so many groundbreaking research studies. I should've realized earlier that Jude had been behind it all along. It wasn't hard to find proof at home, especially when I still ha

Jude froze, his mind buzzing. "What did you say?" The rescue worker on the other end hesitated before speaking. "Sir, someone witnessed Ms. Yates jumping down. When the rescue team arrived, it was already too late. We found your number in her phone's call history.""Call history?" He opened his phone and found a call record with me.However, he knew he hadn't answered any calls himself. With that in mind, he turned to look at Thalia. "You answered Lyra's call?"Thalia's expression became panicked. "I didn't say anything! I just said you were here with me. How was I supposed to know she'd take it that hard—" "Enough!" Jude roared. Then, he rushed out toward the countryside. His heart pounded uneasily, his clothes and hair disheveled, completely unlike his usual rational self. When he arrived, all he saw was bright red blood below the cliff. Bloodstains were everywhere, with my torn clothes and some jewelry scattered on the ground. His face turned pale instantly at the sight.
