KNOX

“Looks like you’re healing nicely,” Kael called out from behind me.

Of course, I was healing nicely— one of the perks of being an Alpha. Our healing speed couldn’t be contended with.

Still, I had no idea why he’d come all the way to the rooftop. I didn’t need company.

With the same level of sass he’d spoken with, I responded, “Aren’t you the nice chauffeur? The mate bond must have you on hooks.”

Being on the roof meant the horrible him coming in with the Omega, offering to help her carry all that stuff like a damn fool was perfectly displayed before my face.

The girl was becoming a magnet, and this only increased my urge to ridicule her. Couldn’t they see right through her?

“It costs nothing to be kind, Knox.” Without another word, Kael settled on the pink plastic chair. A brief moment of silence followed, but I could feel it coming.

I knew my brother so well that his thoughts weren’t alien to me. Through the telepathy link, his voice resounded in my head, heavy, ‘You didn’t

VANDERI found Knox in his room. He’d left the door ajar which rarely ever happened. He didn’t flinch when I stepped, not a single glance at me.He just kept shoving shirts into his duffel bag with the same conviction as someone who was trying to erase everything he’d ever built here.“Where are you going?” I leaned against the door. For once, I wanted to bare it all out and talk about father’s decision. The position meant a lot to me, as it would to anyone else but not enough to have me sent a crack right through my foundation that this family is.“Figured that was obvious.” There was anything but friendliness painting his tone. “Knox.”His jaw flexed. “What?”“Where are you going?”He zipped the bag hard. “Does it matter?”“You’re my brother. Of course it matters.”He turned to face me. “I’m not your anything, Vander. Not anymore. You got what you wanted. Enjoy the fucking throne.”I sighed, exasperated. This was all too tiring. I was nothing to the family too. Heck, half my child

VANDERThe room smelled like old ashwood and fresh resentment. We were all there like picture-perfect family portraits gone stale, at the bottom of a dusty pile. Everyone was present. Knox sat stiffly to my left, his knee bouncing like it had somewhere better to be. Kai lounged in his chair, trying too hard to look like he didn’t care — he always did that when he did. Kael, too, was here, under father’s invitation and demand. It was impromptu, if anything. Quite appalling too considering his wife just got out of the hospital. Whatever he wanted to talk about, it had better make sense. The Alpha stood in front of us, no throne or high seat, just the full demeanor of a man who had ruled our lives with an iron jaw. Even right now, he looked… unreadable, yet the tension had the air in a chokehold. It was so quiet that anyone would hear a pin drop. I shuffled in my seat right before he started speaking.“I called this meeting,” he began with a voice so commanding, “because there’s a decis

KNOXI should’ve known it was her.The second Vander said Amber was behind it—the leak, the tip to the press, the public humiliation Dala went through—it all made sense. I’d brushed off her petty digs, the way she always slinked around Dala with that fake smile but this was anything but petty.I found her outside Xavier’s place. All smug in her little red jacket, perched like a goddamn fox who’d just eaten someone’s pet bird. Her phone was in her hand, and she was giggling at something she read, probably one of the headlines or mean comments.I didn’t even think before I grabbed her by the wrist and yanked her into the alley beside the building.“Hey. Knox!” she screeched, struggling against me. “Are you insane?”I shoved her back against the wall just enough to get my point across. “You think this is funny?” I hissed. “You think ruining her life is a joke?”She blinked at me, fake confusion plastered on her face. “What are you talking about?”“Don’t play dumb, Amber. You tipped off

VANDER“She just walked out,” Knox muttered, eyes narrowed as the automatic doors slid shut behind Dala’s retreating figure. “You’re just gonna let her go like that?”I let his words hover over my head. I already knew what he was thinking. What they were all thinking and I didn’t need another reminder that she hadn’t looked back—hadn’t said goodbye.“I’m not letting her go,” I said, trying to find calm in the voice that didn’t even sound like my own. “I’m following her.”Knox slid in front of me, his face scrunched up in determination. “Then I’ll go with you.”My jaw tightened, cruel laughter bubbling up my throat. Didn’t he understand that this was about me and her? It was my child growing inside of her, my responsibility, my love. “No. You’ve done enough already.” I walked away but Knox overtook me, his nostrils flaring as he spoke. “Excuse me?”“She doesn’t need all of us breathing down her neck right now. You stay here. I’ll handle it.” I brushed past him before he could argue f

DALAThe first thing I heard was a soft beeping—steady and distant—then a low murmur of someone speaking near me. I tried to move, but my limbs felt as heavy as bones dipped in concrete.“Miss…? Can you hear me?”My eyes fluttered open, a small gasp spilling through my lips. The room was bright— too bright. The pungent, acidic stench of antiseptic hit me, and panic jolted up my spine. My breath caught, my eyes darting around. Where the hell—?A woman in scrubs leaned over, “You’re safe,” she assured. “At the hospital. Do you remember anything?”My throat remained as dry as a desert, words dying on my tongue. The memories came flooding in—cold ropes on my wrists, the stink of sweat and cigarettes. Xavier’s goon’s grabbing me.I flinched hard, and the heart monitor jumped.“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” the nurse said, soothing me. “You’re safe now. You’re okay.”No. I wasn’t. I was alive, sure. But okay? If they weren’t caught then—Then they’d be back for me. Oh my god, the ransom. They’d sa

VANDERSomething was off.Knox stood against the pale hospital wall with one foot already out the door. His jaw was clenched, his hands fidgeting by his sides as though he was waiting for someone to call his name or he was debating bolting and hoping no one noticed. He looked disturbed. Hasty. He hadn’t sat a minute in the last hour.Kai and Kael were still hunched on the waiting room couch, their faces carved from exhaustion and anxiety. Luna Ambessa was still in surgery. We hadn’t heard a word from the doctors in over an hour.So when Knox suddenly straightened and said, “I have to go do something,” the entire room fell into a stunned silence.Kael sat up. “What? Now?”Kai raised a brow. “You’re leaving?”Knox barely looked at them. “I’ll be back. I promise. It’s just… important.”My brows furrowed as I straightened from where I was leaning against the window frame. “You serious right now?”Knox ignored me, turning to the exit and completely ignoring my existence. Something wasn’t r
