Chapter 3

Author: Nora Shaw
Elias froze for a second, his expression darkening. "Fine. Do whatever you want."

Jasmine clenched her fingers, her eyes turning red. "Larissa, I never thought things would end up like this. I..."

"It has nothing to do with you." Elias slipped an arm around Jasmine's shoulders. "She's just jealous of you. This has nothing to do with you. Come on."

Jasmine followed Elias off the bus, but not before turning back to give me a mocking look.

[Okay, I actually feel a little sorry for the other girl now.]

[It's her own fault! She was trying to expose our girl!]

[Exactly! Our girl was only trying to set up a comeback. Why did she have to stick her nose into it? No wonder the male lead goes after her later. She ruins our girl's plans and humiliates her in front of everyone. You think the male lead is just going to let that slide?]

[Am I the only one who thinks the other girl has been miserable from the very beginning?

[Back in middle school, her stepfather almost sexually abused her. The male lead rescued her, so she thought he was her savior. Instead, he became the trap that eventually cost her her life. Instead, he became the trap that eventually cost her her life.]

[Are you kidding me? The male lead saved some pathetic girl on a whim and entertained himself for a while. So what? Did she really expect him to take responsibility for her for the rest of his life? If she could not understand her place and got crushed because of it, she had it coming.]

The comments flew past my eyes.

I took my half of the exam admission slip and returned to my seat, but my hands would not stop shaking.

That was when I finally sobered up.

The comments were right.

I had already had a hard enough life. Why should I keep worrying about everyone else?

For the first time, all I felt was relief.

Thank goodness, I had seen the comments.

Thank goodness, I had received my acceptance from Cromwell University.

As for them? They were no longer my problem.

"Seriously, where are they?"

"Did anyone find one?"

"No. I checked under the seats, the overhead compartments, and the trash cans again. Nothing."

"Jasmine, give us another clue! We're almost out of time."

Jasmine stomped her foot. "They're right under your feet! Come on, keep looking! You found Larissa's in the trash, didn't you?"

Elias glanced at his watch. "What's everyone freaking out about? They'll give us a 15-minute grace period even if we're late. We just have to make it there before the cutoff. Take your time."

That was what he said, but nobody could sit still anymore. The bus fell quiet, with the only sound being the soft rustling of everyone searching for their admission slips.

Five minutes before the exam was scheduled to begin, Mr. Rogers finally arrived at the bus.

"The exam is about to start! What are all of you still doing here?" He was sweating and breathing hard as he stood by the bus door.

"Mr. Rogers, we're playing a game. We're looking for our exam admission slips." Jasmine blinked up at him with wide, innocent eyes.

"Are you all out of your mind?" Andrew's voice shot up. "Do you have any idea what time it is? Whoever hid them, hand them over right now."

Jasmine flinched and took a small step back.

Elias immediately moved in front of her. "Mr. Rogers, why are you yelling? We all agreed to play. You're scaring Jasmine."

"Exactly." Ryan looked annoyed. "We know what we're doing. You don't need to come in here and scare us."

"Come on. Stop wasting our time."

Mr. Rogers pointed at them, too angry to speak for a moment. Then, he turned to me. "Larissa, what happened? Why didn't you stop them? I couldn't even reach you on your phone."

I said nothing. I simply stared at the exam admission slip in my hand.

Mr. Rogers followed my gaze. When he saw the torn half of the paper, he froze. "This... Who did this?"

Only then did I slowly look up. "Mr. Rogers, please don't ask."

He crouched down and stared at the torn slip. Then he looked around at the entire class. Nobody answered.

"We'll deal with the slip after the exam. Right now, everyone goes into the exam room."

Nobody moved.

"Mr. Rogers, she chose to play the game herself," Ryan said.

"Exactly. Now she's acting like the victim."

"You always take her side."

Mr. Rogers took a deep breath. His voice came out hoarse. "Enough. Just take the exam first, okay?"

Nobody said a word.

Mr. Rogers took my arm and helped me off the bus. "Come on. We'll get you a replacement exam slip first."

  • Let Them Dare   Chapter 10

The sky was bright blue on the first day of term at Cromwell University. I stood at the entrance to the university, watching the old buildings glow gold beneath the sunlight.Students were taking pictures, chatting with each other, and dragging suitcases along the stone paths.Nobody knew me, and I did not know anyone. My phone buzzed. It was Sheila: [Did you get there?]Me: [Yep.]Sheila: [How is it?]Me: [Great.]Sheila: [That's good. Take care of yourself over there.]Me: [You too.]She sent me some updates about Jasmine. Her mother tried to send her abroad, but the plan fell through. She was also being ostracized at her new school.I read the messages but left them unanswered. I no longer hated her. More importantly, I no longer cared about what happened to her.My phone buzzed again. This time, it was a notification that money had been deposited into my bank account. Elias had transferred 50,000 dollars. The note said: [Study materials.]He still owed me money for all

Elias stood there, completely stunned."You know, your mom came to see me once. She told me not to hold you back. After Jasmine transferred here, you started complaining that I was annoying and that I was always ruining everyone's fun. "I never said anything because I thought you were just temporarily blinded by her. I thought you would eventually come to your senses."I paused."You did. You just did it too late." With that, I turned and headed toward the gate."Larissa!" he called after me.I did not stop."Larissa! I'm sorry!"I still did not stop.Elias' voice grew fainter behind me until the crowd swallowed it completely.I never looked back. Not once. After I boarded the plane, I found my seat and settled in. My phone buzzed with a message from Elias: [Larissa, I know you don't believe me, but I really know I was wrong.]I did not reply. My phone buzzed again.[I went through our old messages. Every morning, you would text me, 'Get up.' Every night, you would ask,

The group chat went silent for a moment. Then, Elias' profile picture suddenly lit up.[Let's clear things up. If you have a video, post the video. If you have recordings, post the recordings.][Elias is right. We can't let Jasmine keep making things up.]Before long, the rest of the class started heading to Jasmine's live stream on their own.The mood in the comment section changed instantly.[Jasmine is lying.][Jasmine, did you already forget that the police took you away? Was being in the holding room not enough?][You'd better back off. Keep this up and you might drag your parents into this too.][The video is already out, and you're still pretending?][Ryan, you said Larissa hinted that you should tear up her exam admission slip? Are you willing to confront her about it?]Wayne immediately dropped the video link into the comments.[Watch it yourself. 'She pressured Jasmine to give in'? She backed off on her own. And the admission slip? Ryan was the one who tore it.]J

Three days later, the final exams were over. The class group chat, which had been silent for three days, suddenly came alive again. However, almost every conversation was about how badly everyone thought they had done or where they were planning to go to repeat a year.As we were chatting, someone suddenly dropped a link to a live stream in the group. I clicked on it. Jasmine was on camera, crying so hard she looked like her heart had been shattered."I only wanted to give my classmates a beautiful memory, but Larissa..."She broke off with a sob, and tears rolled down her cheeks."I know I shouldn't have played that game right before our final exams, but I really only wanted everyone to have some fun. I never expected things to get so bad, and I certainly never expected Larissa to put all the blame on me."Her voice grew softer and softer, as if she were struggling to breathe.Comments floated across the screen.[Isn't that the school beauty who hid everyone's exam admission

There was a soft plop as a single exam slip slipped out from beneath Jasmine's oversized hoodie and landed on the ground. Then another followed, and another, until all 44 remaining exam slips came tumbling out one after another, as if someone had knocked over a line of dominoes.Everyone froze. The students, the parents, and even the police officers could only stare in disbelief as the slips continued to spill onto the ground.Mr. Rogers glared at Jasmine."What were you thinking? You hid all the slips in your clothes and made everyone crawl around that bus searching like idiots. And now? Are you happy? You just ruined the entire honors class."Jasmine collapsed to the ground, her mouth opening and closing as she tried to explain, "No... No, that is not what happened..."The officer stepped in front of her. "Jasmine. You are coming with us.""Why?" Her voice tightened, trembling with tears that had not yet fallen. "I didn't break any laws.""You deliberately hid your classmates'

The moment I finished speaking, the entire entrance fell silent.Everyone was staring at me—my classmates, their parents, the security guard, and even a few proctors who happened to be passing by.Elias was the first to react. "You... What did you just say?""I said I'm not going to St. Aldwyn University." I looked straight at him."When did you apply?""Last year.""Why did you never tell me?"I smiled faintly. "Did you ever give me a chance to?"Elias froze. For the first time, he seemed to realize how long it had been since he had actually sat down and listened to me.Every time I tried to talk to him, he either complained that I was always telling him what to do and pushing him to study, or accused me of deliberately targeting Jasmine. One of the parents rushed over and grabbed my arm. "Listen, if you already have an offer from Cromwell University, then give your spot to my child!"I lowered my eyes to the hand gripping my arm, then looked back at her. "Ma'am, that early
