Sabrina's POV

I turned to look at him. “No. But also… yes.” My voice began to shake.

“How can I just sit there and watch my son rebuild a connection with the woman who once left him?

Nicholas… I raised him.

I was there during midnight fevers, when he took his first steps, when he was terrified of nightmares for the first time.

I was there. Not Hazel.”

Nicholas held my hand tighter and gently stroked the back of it.

“I know. And Charlie knows that too.”

“But he loves Hazel too,” I murmured.

“And I can’t blame him for that.”

A single tear fell. Not many, but enough to reopen the pain I’ve been holding back.

“Hazel said I should give up,” I continued, voice trembling. “She said it’s the only way to keep Charlie from suffering. Because we keep fighting, and it’s confusing him. Maybe she’s right. But I can’t give up. I’m not strong enough to.”

“No one’s asking you to give up,” Nicholas said firmly, pulling me into

Sabrina’s POV The sky had begun to change colors when we arrived at the school yard. Children were starting to come out of the gate—some running, others holding their parents’ hands with heavy backpacks on their shoulders. I glanced at Nicholas as he turned off the engine. He smiled at me, then opened the door and stepped out first.I followed a few steps behind him, and before we could start looking, a cheerful voice I knew so well called out."Mama! Papa!"Charlie ran toward us from the gate, his face glowing with excitement. I crouched down and opened my arms, and he hugged me tightly. Then, just as quickly, he shifted into Nicholas’s embrace, who lifted his small body into the air, laughing."Papaaa! Where were you last night?" Charlie asked innocently, though his expression was a bit scrunched. "I waited, but you didn’t come home."I glanced at Nicholas, giving him space to respond himself. Nicholas slowly lowered Charlie and lo

Sabrina’s POV Nicholas studied me for a moment, then nodded.“I think I have to. If she’s hiding something… I want to hear it from her. I want to know why.”My heart sank at his words. I shouldn’t be surprised, but still, the image of the two of them sitting across from each other—talking about a truth I had held alone all this time—made my stomach turn.“I’m afraid she’ll misunderstand,” I whispered. “That she’ll think you came not for Charlie… but for me.”Nicholas drew a quiet breath, then placed his hand on the table, fingers open like he was offering a place I could hold on to.“If she thinks that… I’ll explain. I don’t want to create more wounds. But this isn’t about taking sides or choosing someone. It’s about our child. And the truth that should’ve come out a long time ago.”I looked at his open hand, but didn’t take it. There was too much in my head. Too many wounds unhealed, and too many possibilities that could shatter ever

Sabrina’s POV My eyes burned hearing his name spoken like that. I turned my head for a moment, hiding the tears that nearly fell. His name—one I had silently held inside for so long—now sounded so real in a conversation I had kept to myself all this time.“I still remember the first time I held him,” I said quietly, still gazing out the window. “Charlie... he was so small. But when I looked into his eyes, I knew he wasn’t just Hazel’s. He was a part of you, too.”Nicholas was silent, his face tightening slightly. But there was no regret in his expression, only wounds carefully concealed behind composed restraint.“I was never angry at you for not knowing,” I continued, this time looking into his eyes. “But I was scared. Scared that if you found out, you’d leave. Or worse—you’d try to take him.”Nicholas’s expression softened. “Sabrina, I would never take Charlie away from you. Or from Hazel. He’s our child—and he deserves to grow up knowing t

Sabrina’s POV My steps were a little hesitant as I entered the restaurant Nicholas had mentioned in his text message earlier this morning. The place was quiet, with sunlight streaming through the large glass windows on one side, casting soft shadows between the wooden tables and cream-colored cushioned chairs. I quickly smoothed my hair before my eyes caught sight of Nicholas, already seated in the corner of the room, at a table near the window. He looked calm, wearing a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his face turned toward the window, staring out at something I couldn’t see.I took a deep breath before walking toward him.“Sorry I’m late,” I said softly, bowing my head slightly as I took the seat across from him. “You must be busy. I should’ve come earlier.”Nicholas turned to me and gave a warm smile, one that eased my burden just a little.“It’s okay, Sabrina. I came early on purpose. Wanted some time to think before we talk,”

Sabrina’s POV I looked up at the family photo on the shelf.Nicholas, Charlie, and me at the playground.Charlie’s smile in that picture was so bright. That was the day we made kites and laughed until our stomachs hurt. The day I felt like the best parent in the world. My fingers touched the frame gently.“Are you happy, sweetheart?” I whispered. “Have I made you happy enough all this time?”My voice was barely audible, as if I was trying to hide the doubt from myself. But inside, that question echoed so loud.I looked again at the photo, Charlie’s little hand gripping mine, Nicholas’s carefree laugh, and me… I looked so whole, as if nothing could break us apart. But now, everything feels fragile. Tears welled up in my eyes. Not because I’m weak, but because I love too deeply.I slowly sat down on the floor, hugging the photo like I was embracing a memory that was starting to drift away.“Mommy’s not

Sabrina’s POV So finally, I just typed. [Alright. I’ll go to sleep. Take care, and don’t worry about us.]My fingers hesitated before pressing send, but then I did. I put the phone on the nightstand and stared up at the dark ceiling. But it wasn’t that easy to push everything out of my mind. His words from earlier still echoed. Not just about custody. Those words pierced my heart with all the possibilities I didn’t want to think about. Not because I was afraid. Not because I didn’t trust Nicholas. But because I knew—something was shifting.Nicholas... he’d always been there for me.Always the shoulder I leaned on, the hand that held mine when I was close to giving up.He wasn’t just my partner. He was a father figure to Charlie. The one Charlie ran to when he fell off his bike or wanted to show off his newest drawing from school. But now... that short message felt like the beginning of a wall, quietly
