Chapter 1

Midway through the ball, Alice suddenly cried out in alarm. Everyone knew her as a penniless student. Something was wrong, and her skin was flaring up in an allergic reaction.

Her face and arms were covered in itchy red bumps. With a plate in her hand, she cried out, "Who did this? Who put nuts in my food?!"

All eyes fell on me.

I was on the student council and in charge of the food.

I told everyone that there were no nuts in any of the ball’s snacks.

However, they later found bits of nuts in my coat pocket.

Alice looked terrified. She trembled a little, like she was trying to be brave, before looking straight at me.

"Helen, what did I ever do to you? Why would you deliberately trigger an allergic reaction for me? Are you trying to stop me from becoming the Belle of the Ball so you can keep all the glory to yourself?"

I was totally confused, trying to figure out what was going on.

Alice kept on accusing me, "You might think you're better than me because I'm poor, but that doesn't give you the right to hurt me! I'm not trying to compete with you. I just want to win the Belle of the Ball title for the $450 prize!

"That might be nothing to you—not even enough for a new purse—but it's all I’ll have to live on for a whole semester! And I could use the extra money to buy medicine for my sick mom!"

She started to cry as she talked, "I wasn't born into the Clark mafia family like you. I've never stolen or taken anything that wasn't mine. I got into this fancy school on a scholarship, and I work hard. What did I do to deserve this?

"Is it a crime to be poor? Do I deserve to be picked on by people like you, Helen Clark?"

Her tears fell, and she looked so sad that the other students grew upset too.

"Yeah, what's the big deal? Just because Helen's dad is a mafia don doesn't mean she can look down on the rest of us!"

"She's probably just like me, someone who got into the school because her family has money. A rich kid who's done nothing on her own bullying hardworking Alice? That's not impressive at all! "

The crowd against me was growing, and things were getting out of hand. I shook my head quickly, trying to clear things up in my panic.

"Alice, I've never looked down on you. I've never looked down on anyone because they're poor!

"I don't know how the nuts got into my clothes, but I promise I didn't put any in your food. There's been some kind of mix-up!"

That's when I heard what Alice was really thinking: 'You have no idea, because I'm the one who put the nuts in your pocket!'

'What good is all this clueless rich kids’ money? They're all my pawns, so easy to manipulate. They're all idiots!'

The first time I saw Alice, back when she was the new girl, I realized I could hear her thoughts.

It was her thoughts that revealed the truth about the setup.

I was so mad I could barely think straight. I could not believe she had staged the whole thing!

However, Alice just cried harder, tears streaming down her face. "A mix-up? Are you claiming I ate nuts on purpose to make it look like you did something to me?"

Her friend whispered in her defense, "Helen is so shameless. There's proof and witnesses, yet she still won't admit it."

Watching Alice's act, I was close to exploding.

I defended myself without holding back, "Alice, you know what really happened better than anyone! You're the one who ate the nuts, yet you’re trying to pin it on me. I'm the one who should be crying!"

Alice's tears stopped suddenly.

She must have been wondering how I knew about her scheme.

Right then, a loud shout came from the edge of the dance floor.

"Stop it!"

There was Mark Hawkins, my fiancé and childhood friend, making his way through the crowd of students toward me.

"Helen, haven't you caused enough trouble?"

It was Alice. She looked as thin as Mark, like a strong wind could knock her over. Her hair was a greasy mess, and her face was all bruised up, like she had been in a fight. She yelled with a face full of bitterness, "Helen, you're not prettier, smarter, or more hardworking than I am. You just got lucky by being born into a better family. Why does everyone love you and want to help you?"Why? Why couldn't I have been born into the Clark family? Why is life so unfair to me?"I just watched her lose it without saying a word.Out of nowhere, Mark jumped out and slapped her hard across the face, yelling like a madman, "Alice, why are you bothering Helen?"Alice, who had been pushed around, seemed to lose her mind even more."You promised that if I just deleted that message and cleared things up, you'd be nice to me again, and we'd even get engaged! I did everything you wanted, but you lied to me! I like you so much, yet you lied to me!"Mark's eyes turned unfeeling."Like me? Do

Mark was frozen in shock.I was pretty surprised, too.My mom quickly shut the door, grabbed my hand, and led me inside, her voice soft but firm, "Sweetie, don't go easy on people who've hurt you. They're just trying to get out of trouble."If you let them off the hook, they'll just hurt you again without thinking twice."I nodded.I had known that ever since Mark smashed that cake on my head in front of everyone. That man was not worth my love. Now, his payback time had come.Alice, who had been out of the picture, showed up again in a strange way.She went live on social media and announced she was pregnant. The baby was Mark's, the rich kid with a silver spoon. On her live stream, she shared her sad story with tears in her eyes. She talked about how she got into that fancy school because she was super smart, but she got picked on by everyone because her family was broke. When she felt alone and lost, her hero Mark showed up.He stood up for her when others were mean.

Mark caught up to me in no time."Helen, I'm sorry. Alice played me. I see that now, and I won't have anything to do with her ever again."He lifted the cake he was holding. "I stood in line for an hour to get your all-time favorite."I did not take the cake he offered and did not even give him a quick glance. I just walked right by him and kept going.Mark hurried after me, trying to win me over. "Helen, I know you're mad at me and don't want to talk. But just tell me, what can I do to make things right between us?"I'd even climb the highest mountain for you if you asked!""Really?"I smirked. "Take a hike, then."Mark froze, totally shocked. He never thought I would turn so heartless, not even giving him a second chance. He was even more shocked by what I said next."What's the matter? Are you scared? I thought you loved me and wanted my forgiveness. Looks like you're just a scaredy cat hiding behind the mouth of a big talker!"Listen up, stop embarrassing yourself by ch

"You should be glad that's all I did. Calling me names? You're not worth all that trouble," Mark said, really angry.Alice looked scared. She could not figure out how Mark knew what she was really thinking. Her eyes filled with tears, and soon, they were falling down her face like rain."Mark, what are you saying? I don't get it."When Mark saw her tears, he did not comfort her softly like he used to. Instead, he looked at her calmly and scoffed."Go on, keep pretending."I was right there when Helen threw the ball. Do you think I couldn’t see whether Helen aimed the ball at you or you put yourself in the ball’s path? Do you think I'm stupid?"The students who had just defended Alice were shocked. They could not believe that the girl they thought was so sweet and innocent could be so cunning.Even Mark, her knight in shining armor, had turned his back on her.If Alice was really as kind as she seemed, why would Mark change his mind about her so fast?Alice kept crying, tryi

I was playing volleyball with my new friends, having a blast, when a furious Mark showed up."Helen, why did you switch your major without telling me? Does your own fiancé even matter to you anymore?"Why are you acting like a little kid? I can’t believe you told your mom about me! Do you have any idea how much my dad yelled at me? Also, he mentioned that your dad isn't picking up his calls. There's some big deal they need to talk about urgently. Could you check with your dad about it?"'Great, now he comes to me,' I thought.Mark's family business would be nothing without the Clark family’s help, like a ship without a sail.Mark had lost the smug look he had at the ball when he tried to pressure me into calling off our engagement and our families’ business dealings.I dropped the volleyball, an icy laugh escaping me, ready to tell him that the Clark family had decided to call off my engagement with him. However, then, out of nowhere, Alice rushed in and bumped into the volleyba

I watched as Mark's world fell apart, unable to bring myself to blink. He turned to Alice with a suspicious look.Alice smiled sweetly at him, but inside, she was rolling her eyes.'Really, staring at me like that to get my attention? How stupid. He must think he's so charming. He should take a look in the mirror!'Ugh, this is just awful. If it weren't for his rich family and the money he could spend on me, I wouldn't pretend to like him for even a second!'Mark's eyebrows knitted together, and his voice was tinged with annoyance."What did you say?"Alice's eyes darted around, and she stuttered, "I-I didn't say anything, Mark. What's wrong?"Her meek look was a cover for her real thoughts.'What's with him today? Why is he acting so weird? He's such a pain!''He's not crazy, is he? That would be a disaster. He hasn't even spent money on me yet!'Mark rubbed his temples, looking pained and in disbelief. He glanced at me once more and then ran off, leaving Alice behind.I c
