"What's going on?" I asked, rising to my feet and using my body to block Delilah from his view.

His gaze turned dark and lazy, as if he knew what I was trying to do and didn't understand why I'd go through all that trouble of hiding her from his view.

"Grigori has Nico," he said, his voice, deep and gravelly but I could tell that he was hanging on to his sanity by a thread.

And then his words hit me.

Nico's childlike smiling face wafted into my memory and an ache settled in my chest at the thought of what those bastards could be doing to him now. A pungent memory of what they did to me came to mind and I fought hard against the nausea that began to work itself up my throat.

"Nico?" Delilah whispered and I could hear the tenseness and dread in her voice. "But he is just a child. What does Nico have to do with the mafia?"
