Chapter 5

Autor: Zee
This was the first time since Monica had gotten married that I ever heard Aunt Lorelei speak in such a disappointed tone.

Outside the room, her furious complaints echoed down the hallway, but inside the ward, it was frighteningly quiet.

I walked in and looked at Monica, who had just finished a C-section.

She didn't react when she saw me. She just turned her head slightly and stared blankly at the floor.

Her pale, exhausted face showed clear finger marks, and the corner of her mouth was swollen.

Now, I finally understood why she had gone into labor early.

Standing there, I couldn't help thinking of her husband from my last life.

He hadn't been wealthy, but he had truly cared for her. He knew their finances were tight, so he had worked hard every day.

Unfortunately, no matter how much he earned, he could never keep up with how quickly Monica became jealous of others.

By the time Monica's baby was discharged from the hospital, almost a month had passed.

  • Letting Her Fall   Chapter 9

See? Only people who reflected on themselves could keep moving forward. We had to let go of the urge to save others and respect the life they choose.Ever since I had gotten a second chance at life, I had kept this lesson close to my heart. In this life, I stayed far away from the people who had once dragged me into the abyss. I simply watched from the sidelines and no longer involved myself.Every path Monica had taken was a choice she had made herself.Whatever the outcome ended up being, she had no one to blame but herself.Unfortunately, Monica still didn't understand that.I went to see her once. She had gotten even thinner than before, and her face was tired and dull. She looked surprised when she saw me."How's my mom doing?"I nodded. "She's woken up. Her health is stable."After waking up in the hospital, Aunt Lorelei hadn't thrown a fit as everyone expected.Instead, she had held Monica's picture every day as she muttered to herself, occasionally cursing under her

  • Letting Her Fall   Chapter 8

Of course, Aunt Lorelei didn't stay quiet for long. The moment she learned Monica had found another wealthy boyfriend, she announced it to everyone she knew.Aunt Karen was worried the age gap was too big and gently suggested that Aunt Lorelei keep an eye on things for Monica. However, she refused to listen and insisted we knew nothing. According to her, older men treated women better.Well, sure. My dad treated me pretty well, too.As always, the good times didn't last. Just when everyone thought Monica was about to get remarried, she broke up again.Apparently, she had attended a business gala with her wealthy boyfriend when she ran into Howard and his new wife.Howard's wife had mocked her, calling her secondhand goods nobody wanted. She even sneered that Monica must be starving for attention. To secure a rich man, she was willing to date someone old enough to be her father.Being humiliated like that in public, Monica obviously couldn't swallow her anger. So, right there i

  • Letting Her Fall   Chapter 7

"Tabitha, could you let me stay in your apartment for a while?" Monica asked. "We've been close since we were kids. You won't turn me down, right?"I knew this was exactly what she had come for.Did she actually think she could guilt-trip me? She could dream on.After moving back for work, I had been living with my parents in the new house I had bought. The old studio apartment was the one my parents had purchased for me after college so that I would be closer to the office. It had been empty ever since, but that didn't mean I was about to let her move in."Sorry, I rented that place out a few days ago.""What? You rented it out?"Monica looked genuinely shocked, then a bit suspicious."You're a vice president with a high salary now. Why would you care about a small amount of rent?"I lowered my head and smiled. "You're funny. Who complains about having too much money?"She kept pestering me, insisting I take the place back from the tenants so that she could live there. She

  • Letting Her Fall   Chapter 6

Two years had passed, and Monica looked like a completely different person.Seeing her now, then glancing at the relatives around us, I realized the center of attention at family gatherings had shifted. She used to be the star of the family. Now, it was me.Aunt Lorelei was still the same as ever, always eager to show off.She used to brag about her daughter, and now, she bragged about her granddaughter, Kaylee Sharp, instead. She was leading two-year-old Kaylee from elder to elder, having her greet everyone while grinning from ear to ear. After dinner, everyone walked out of the restaurant and started heading home.Just then, a man and a woman walked out of the club next door. The man was heavyset and had his arm wrapped tightly around a woman dressed in a revealing outfit. They were standing much too close. In the dim evening light, none of us paid attention to them at first, but Monica suddenly rushed forward."You tramp! How dare you go after my husband?!"Before anyone

  • Letting Her Fall   Chapter 4

I quietly went back to my room and closed the door, leaving the living room for the two of them to argue. In less than half an hour, Monica gave in and let Aunt Lorelei drag her home.I couldn't remember most of their argument, but one sentence landed clearly in my ears."Men from rich families are all the same. Of course, he's going to fool around. You need to hurry up and have a baby; that's the only way to keep his heart. Once you have a child, no matter how many women he has outside, none of them can shake your place."How pathetic. But to me, it was nothing more than a farce. It had nothing to do with me.Everything happening now was just the result of her own choices. In my previous life, I had already built up plenty of work experience, so returning two years earlier actually made things easier for me at the office.I helped my boss secure a major project, was quickly promoted to department manager, and earned a higher salary than before. Now that I had a second chance,
