The mansion’s barrier didn’t look like anything.

That was the terrifying part.

Denise pressed her hand to the glass again, watching the attacker outside strike at the invisible wall like it might eventually give in.

It didn’t.

It only reacted.

Subtle ripples spread through the air each time it hit—like reality was acknowledging pressure, then refusing to break.

Denise stepped back slowly.

“This is impossible,” she whispered again, but now it sounded like habit more than disbelief.

Below, the courtyard was chaos.

Not messy chaos.

Controlled chaos.

Liam moved through it like he already knew every outcome before it happened.

Another body hit the ground.

Then another.

The attackers weren’t weak.

She could see that much.

But they weren’t… matching him.

They were reacting to him.

And that was the difference.

Denise’s eyes tracked Liam as he stopped briefly in the center of the courtyard.

One of the attackers circled him cautiously.

“Even your own kind will fear what you become if you keep her,” the man called out.

Liam didn’t look at him.

He looked up again.

Directly at Denise.

For a split second.

Just long enough for her to feel it in her chest.

Not fear this time.

Something worse.

Recognition.

Like she wasn’t just watching the fight.

She was part of it.

Then Liam moved again.

And the attacker circling him froze mid-step.

Like his body forgot what movement was.

Then collapsed.

Denise’s breath caught.

“What did you do?” she whispered.

But the answer didn’t come from Liam.

It came from the lead figure still standing near the forest edge.

“You’re losing control, Alpha,” it called out. “The more you use it near her, the less stable you become.”

Liam stopped.

That was the first time he stopped.

Denise felt it immediately.

The pressure in the air shifted.

Something tightened.

Not outward.

Inward.

Like Liam was pulling something back into himself that wanted to expand.

Denise’s fingers curled against the balcony frame.

Down below, Liam spoke quietly.

“You came here knowing that.”

The lead figure smiled faintly.

“We came because we wanted proof.”

A pause.

Then:

“And now we have it.”

Denise frowned slightly.

Proof of what?

The figure lifted its head toward her again.

And this time, its voice carried more clearly.

“Human proximity destabilizes an Alpha’s restraint,” it said. “We didn’t believe it until you.”

Denise went still.

“I’m not doing anything,” she said instinctively, even though no one had asked her.

Liam finally spoke again.

Strained, quieter than before.

“Stop talking to her.”

The figure ignored him.

Instead, it stepped forward a little.

“Do you feel it?” it asked Denise directly.

Denise swallowed. “Feel what?”

The figure smiled.

“How the air changes when he looks at you too long.”

Denise’s throat tightened slightly.

She didn’t answer.

Because she did feel it.

She just hadn’t wanted to name it.

Below, Liam’s voice dropped.

“I said stop.”

The figure turned its head slightly toward him.

“Or what?” it asked softly.

Silence.

Then Liam moved.

Not like before.

Slower.

Heavier.

The air around him compressed.

Denise felt it even from above—like gravity had shifted slightly in the courtyard.

The attackers nearby stumbled without being touched.

The lead figure took a step back for the first time.

“…there it is,” it whispered.

Liam’s voice came again.

Lower.

Final.

“You should have stayed outside my territory.”

The figure smiled again, but it wasn’t as steady now.

“We are outside,” it said.

A pause.

Then:

“She isn’t.”

Denise’s heart dropped.

Liam stopped completely.

And for a moment—

everything went still.

Even the wind.

Even the distant sounds of struggle.

Like the world itself was waiting.

Then Liam spoke again.

Very quietly.

“Denise.”

Hearing her name like that made her stomach tighten.

Not command.

Not warning.

Something else.

She stepped forward slightly. “I’m here.”

A pause.

Then his voice came again.

Strained now.

Controlled, but barely.

“Go inside the second room,” he said.

Denise frowned. “What second room?”

A beat.

Then—

a soft click came from behind her.

She turned.

A section of the wall beside her desk had opened slightly.

A hidden panel.

Denise froze.

She hadn’t seen that before.

A passageway.

Dim light inside.

Liam’s voice came again, sharper now.

“Now.”

Denise hesitated.

Below, the lead figure laughed softly.

“Too late,” it said. “She’s already within the resonance field.”

Denise didn’t understand the words.

But she understood Liam’s reaction.

Because the moment those words were spoken—

something inside the courtyard changed.

Liam’s head lowered slightly.

And the air around him fractured.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like restraint had hit its limit.

Denise took one step toward the hidden passage.

Then stopped.

“Liam,” she called out again, louder this time. “What is that thing talking about?”

Silence.

Then Liam answered.

And his voice was no longer fully steady.

“You make it harder to separate instinct from control.”

Denise froze.

Below, the attackers began retreating slightly.

Not running.

Repositioning.

Careful now.

The lead figure raised a hand again.

“Bring her down,” it ordered.

And from the forest—

something moved.

Not like the others.

Slower.

Deliberate.

Denise stepped back instinctively.

Liam saw it too.

And for the first time—

he turned fully away from the attackers.

Toward the mansion.

Toward her.

His eyes met hers again.

And this time—

there was no distance left in them.

Only urgency.

“Denise,” he said again.

Her name sounded different now.

Heavier.

Personal.

“You need to decide something.”

Denise swallowed. “Decide what?”

A pause.

Then Liam said it.

Quietly.

Carefully.

“Whether you trust me enough to stay inside…”

A beat.

The mansion creaked slightly.

“…or whether you want to see what happens when I stop holding anything back.”

And below—

something massive stepped out of the forest line.

  • Liam’s Obsession    The first kill rule

Denise didn’t move. Not when Liam’s voice reached her. Not when the forest line shifted again. Not even when the air itself seemed to tighten, like the mansion was holding its breath. “Stay inside,” he had said. But the way he said it didn’t feel like protection anymore. It felt like containment. Denise’s fingers tightened around the balcony frame. Down below, the courtyard lights flickered once more—and then stabilized into a dim, uneasy glow. The shapes at the forest edge didn’t rush in. They waited. That was worse. Because waiting meant intelligence. Intent. Denise swallowed. “This is not happening,” she whispered. Then the first one stepped out. Not running. Not hiding. Just walking into the light like it had every right to be there. Denise’s chest tightened. It looked human at first. But only until it tilted its head. Too slowly. Too deliberately. Then another stepped beside it. And another. Liam didn’t move. He just watched

  • Liam’s Obsession    When the walls start moving

Denise stood still after Liam left. Not because she wanted to obey him. But because the mansion had gone quiet in a way that felt wrong again. Not peaceful. Not empty. Alert. She exhaled slowly and walked toward the window. Outside, the forest line looked unchanged. Still. Dark. But after everything she had seen, “still” no longer meant safe. Denise pressed her fingers against the glass. “What am I supposed to do with this?” she whispered. A faint vibration ran through the floor. She froze. Then another. Like something heavy had moved somewhere deep below the mansion. Denise stepped back immediately. “No,” she muttered. “No, I’m not doing this again.” She turned toward the door. Locked. Of course it was. She tried the handle anyway. Nothing. Then— a soft sound behind her. Denise spun instantly. The room was empty. But the air felt… different again. • Liam’s Obsession    The thing he won’t admit

Denise stared at him. “From you,” she repeated slowly. “What does that even mean?” Liam didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he turned away and walked toward the window, as if the act of looking outside gave him something to control. When he spoke again, his voice was quieter. “Among my kind,” he said, “territory is not land.” Denise frowned. “Then what is it?” A pause. “Attention,” Liam replied. That didn’t make it clearer. It made it worse. Denise stepped forward slightly. “So you’re saying… they’re targeting me because you’re paying attention to me?” Liam’s jaw tightened. “Yes.” Silence. Denise exhaled sharply, running a hand through her hair. “That’s insane.” “It’s real,” he corrected. She looked at him sharply. “So what now? I just live locked in your house forever because you decided to—what—look at me too long?” Liam turned back to her. And this time, there was something different in his expression. Less control. More honesty. “You t

  • Liam’s Obsession    The line he can’t cross

Denise didn’t respond immediately. Liam’s words hung in the room like something unfinished. You make it hard for me to stay what I am. She should have focused on the “werewolf” part. She should have panicked more. But instead— her mind kept circling that sentence. Because it sounded less like danger… and more like struggle. Denise finally spoke, voice quieter than before. “So what you’re saying is… I’m the problem?” Liam’s gaze flickered. “No.” A pause. Then, more carefully: “You’re the trigger.” Denise frowned. “That sounds worse.” “It is,” he admitted. Silence settled again. The mansion outside remained quiet now, but it wasn’t the same kind of quiet as before. This one felt controlled. Managed. Like something had been locked back into place. Denise crossed her arms tightly. “If you’re telling the truth… which I’m still not fully accepting…” Liam didn’t interrupt. “…then what was outside earlier?” she asked. “The thing in my room.
