Denise didn’t respond immediately.

Liam’s words hung in the room like something unfinished.

You make it hard for me to stay what I am.

She should have focused on the “werewolf” part.

She should have panicked more.

But instead—

her mind kept circling that sentence.

Because it sounded less like danger…

and more like struggle.

Denise finally spoke, voice quieter than before.

“So what you’re saying is… I’m the problem?”

Liam’s gaze flickered.

“No.”

A pause.

Then, more carefully:

“You’re the trigger.”

Denise frowned. “That sounds worse.”

“It is,” he admitted.

Silence settled again.

The mansion outside remained quiet now, but it wasn’t the same kind of quiet as before.

This one felt controlled.

Managed.

Like something had been locked back into place.

Denise crossed her arms tightly. “If you’re telling the truth… which I’m still not fully accepting…”

Liam didn’t interrupt.

“…then what was outside earlier?” she asked. “The thing in my room. The shadow. The… whatever that was.”

Liam’s expression hardened slightly.

“That wasn’t mine.”

Denise blinked. “But you said—”

“There are different kinds,” he interrupted.

His voice lowered.

“Not all of them follow rules.”

A chill moved through Denise’s spine.

“So there are more like you,” she said slowly. “And some of them are… not like you at all.”

Liam nodded once.

Denise let out a slow breath, trying to organize the chaos in her head.

“This is insane,” she whispered again, but it lacked conviction now.

Because she had seen too much.

Felt too much.

Liam watched her carefully.

Then said something quieter.

“You’re handling this better than most.”

Denise scoffed softly. “Is that supposed to be comforting?”

“No.”

A pause.

Then:

“It’s concerning.”

Denise looked at him sharply. “Concerning?”

Liam stepped closer again—but stopped at a careful distance.

“You’re adapting too quickly,” he said.

Denise frowned. “Maybe I just don’t believe you yet.”

Liam studied her for a moment.

Then:

“You will.”

That certainty again.

Denise shook her head slightly. “You talk like everything is already decided.”

“It is,” he said calmly.

Silence.

Then Denise took a breath.

“If I really am in danger,” she said, “then why not just send me away? Somewhere safe? Why keep me here?”

That question shifted something in the air.

Liam didn’t answer immediately.

And for the first time…

he looked away.

Just slightly.

A rare crack.

Denise noticed instantly.

“You can send me away,” she pressed. “Can’t you?”

Liam’s jaw tightened.

A long silence followed.

Then, finally:

“I could.”

Denise waited.

He didn’t continue.

So she did.

“But?”

That single word made him look back at her.

And something in his expression had changed.

Not softer.

Not harsher.

More conflicted.

“There is no safe place,” he said quietly.

Denise frowned. “That’s not true.”

“It is for you,” he replied.

Silence.

Then Liam stepped closer again, but slower this time.

Controlled.

Measured.

“Every movement you make now is already being tracked,” he said. “Leaving doesn’t erase that.”

Denise’s voice dropped slightly. “Tracked by who?”

Liam hesitated.

Then:

“People who don’t see you as a person.”

Denise felt a sharp discomfort in her chest.

“And you do?” she asked.

That question landed differently.

Liam didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at her for a long time.

Too long.

Then finally:

“I’m trying to.”

The honesty in that sentence made the room feel quieter.

Denise didn’t respond.

She didn’t know how.

Because part of her wanted to reject everything he was saying.

But another part—

the part that had felt the shift in the air when he appeared in the courtyard—

wasn’t as confident anymore.

A knock suddenly echoed through the hallway.

Both of them turned instantly.

Hard.

Liam’s entire posture changed.

Denise’s pulse spiked.

Another knock.

Firmer this time.

A voice followed.

“Sir. It’s secured.”

Liam exhaled slowly.

Then walked toward the door.

Before opening it, he turned slightly back to Denise.

“Stay here,” he said.

Denise frowned. “I feel like I’ve heard that too many times today.”

Liam didn’t respond.

He opened the door.

A guard stood outside, tense. “Perimeter is clear. Three eliminated. One escaped into the forest line.”

Silence.

Liam’s eyes darkened slightly.

“Which direction?”

The guard answered quickly.

Liam nodded once.

Then closed the door again.

When he turned back to Denise, something had shifted in him again.

Focus.

Sharpness.

Decision.

Denise noticed it immediately.

“What?” she asked cautiously.

Liam walked toward her slowly.

Not threatening.

But absolute.

“They know where you are now,” he said.

Denise’s stomach tightened. “You said that already.”

“This is different.”

A pause.

Then Liam stepped closer, voice lowering.

“This time, they won’t wait.”

Denise swallowed. “For what?”

Liam held her gaze.

Then said quietly:

“For permission.”

Silence.

Denise frowned. “Permission from who?”

Liam didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at her like he was standing at the edge of something he didn’t want to cross.

Then, softly:

“From me.”

And for the first time since she met him…

Denise realized the most dangerous thing about Liam Dawson wasn’t what he was.

It was what he was trying not to become around her.

  • Liam’s Obsession    The cage that learns her name

The mansion’s barrier didn’t look like anything. That was the terrifying part. Denise pressed her hand to the glass again, watching the attacker outside strike at the invisible wall like it might eventually give in. It didn’t. It only reacted. Subtle ripples spread through the air each time it hit—like reality was acknowledging pressure, then refusing to break. Denise stepped back slowly. “This is impossible,” she whispered again, but now it sounded like habit more than disbelief. Below, the courtyard was chaos. Not messy chaos. Controlled chaos. Liam moved through it like he already knew every outcome before it happened. Another body hit the ground. Then another. The attackers weren’t weak. She could see that much. But they weren’t… matching him. They were reacting to him. And that was the difference. Denise’s eyes tracked Liam as he stopped briefly in the center of the courtyard. One of the attackers circled him cautiously. “Even your own

  • Liam’s Obsession    The first kill rule

Denise didn’t move. Not when Liam’s voice reached her. Not when the forest line shifted again. Not even when the air itself seemed to tighten, like the mansion was holding its breath. “Stay inside,” he had said. But the way he said it didn’t feel like protection anymore. It felt like containment. Denise’s fingers tightened around the balcony frame. Down below, the courtyard lights flickered once more—and then stabilized into a dim, uneasy glow. The shapes at the forest edge didn’t rush in. They waited. That was worse. Because waiting meant intelligence. Intent. Denise swallowed. “This is not happening,” she whispered. Then the first one stepped out. Not running. Not hiding. Just walking into the light like it had every right to be there. Denise’s chest tightened. It looked human at first. But only until it tilted its head. Too slowly. Too deliberately. Then another stepped beside it. And another. Liam didn’t move. He just watched

  • Liam’s Obsession    When the walls start moving

Denise stood still after Liam left. Not because she wanted to obey him. But because the mansion had gone quiet in a way that felt wrong again. Not peaceful. Not empty. Alert. She exhaled slowly and walked toward the window. Outside, the forest line looked unchanged. Still. Dark. But after everything she had seen, “still” no longer meant safe. Denise pressed her fingers against the glass. “What am I supposed to do with this?” she whispered. A faint vibration ran through the floor. She froze. Then another. Like something heavy had moved somewhere deep below the mansion. Denise stepped back immediately. “No,” she muttered. “No, I’m not doing this again.” She turned toward the door. Locked. Of course it was. She tried the handle anyway. Nothing. Then— a soft sound behind her. Denise spun instantly. The room was empty. But the air felt… different again. Denise’s breathing tightened. “Liam?” she called out. No answer. She wal

  • Liam’s Obsession    The thing he won’t admit

Denise stared at him. “From you,” she repeated slowly. “What does that even mean?” Liam didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he turned away and walked toward the window, as if the act of looking outside gave him something to control. When he spoke again, his voice was quieter. “Among my kind,” he said, “territory is not land.” Denise frowned. “Then what is it?” A pause. “Attention,” Liam replied. That didn’t make it clearer. It made it worse. Denise stepped forward slightly. “So you’re saying… they’re targeting me because you’re paying attention to me?” Liam’s jaw tightened. “Yes.” Silence. Denise exhaled sharply, running a hand through her hair. “That’s insane.” “It’s real,” he corrected. She looked at him sharply. “So what now? I just live locked in your house forever because you decided to—what—look at me too long?” Liam turned back to her. And this time, there was something different in his expression. Less control. More honesty. “You t
