Chapter 1

作者: Perfect Timing
Hearing Heidi Limebear's voice again, I realized that I had been reborn. She was my younger sister.

Looking at her wide, innocent eyes, it was almost impossible to believe that she had once tried to kill me.

At that moment, her inner voice drifted into my mind: "At the riverside, I saw the other kids learning to swim… I wish Daniella could teach me…"

Those were the same words I'd heard in my past life. A knot of unease formed in my stomach.

Remembering how I had nearly drowned back then, I decided to pretend that I hadn't heard her at all.

When I didn't react, a shadow of confusion passed over Heidi's eyes.

She blinked in thought and looked at me shyly. "It's so hot, Daniella. Can you take me to play in the water? I really want to learn to swim," she said sweetly.

I was momentarily taken aback. "Why don't you just turn on the air conditioner? It's dangerous to go in the water at this time of year. Accidents can happen easily."

Heidi's eyes betrayed her disappointment, but she kept silent.

I breathed a sigh of relief. As long as she stayed safe, maybe the chain of misfortunes from my past life could be avoided.

But just as I let my guard down, the unexpected struck.

After Heidi pleaded with our parents, Patrick Limebear and Connie McGill, they finally agreed to organize a family picnic by the lake in the park.

A sense of unease weighed on me throughout the day. I sat alone near the water, doing everything I could to stay away from Heidi.

But before I realized it, she had appeared at my side. Our parents insisted that I keep an eye on her, leaving me with no choice but to stay close.

In the brief instant when they turned their backs, Heidi pretended to lose her footing. With a sudden splash, she toppled into the lake.

Startled, I cried out, "Heidi, be careful!"

The noise drew my parents' attention. Without a second thought, Dad plunged into the water to save her, while Mom hurriedly called emergency services.

My face went ashen. It wasn't until Dad lifted her from the water that I finally let out a sigh of relief.

Cradling the barely conscious Heidi, he asked anxiously, "Heidi, what happened just now?"

Heidi glanced at me, too frightened to speak.

Noticing her hesitation, Dad reassured her, "Heidi, don't be afraid. We've got your back."

Upon hearing this, Heidi finally found her voice. "It was Daniella… She pushed me from behind…" Her voice trembled as she spoke.

"But Dad, please don't blame her," she quickly added. "Even if she doesn't like me, I don't think she'd hurt me on purpose…"

The instant Dad caught her words, he pointed at me, anger flashing in his gaze. "Daniella! How could you possibly do something so cruel?"

Mom's eyes brimmed with disappointment as she looked at me. "Heidi has suffered enough after being lost for ten long years. How could you even think of drowning her?"

Hearing the exact same words I had once heard in my past life, I was left in complete shock.

Could everything truly be predestined? Or was Heidi orchestrating this on purpose?

A wave of terror washed over me, and I couldn't help but glance at her. She quickly turned her head, her lips sealed in silence.

At that moment, her voice echoed in my mind: "Please stop blaming Daniella… Maybe I was wrong…"

Gritting my teeth, I tried to explain, "I didn't push Heidi, I swear! I was at least ten feet away from the water."

Hearing this, Dad's anger only deepened. "So, are you implying that Heidi made this up? Why would she accuse you senselessly?"

I was furious. Scanning the area, I pointed toward a surveillance camera in the distance. "If you don't believe me, feel free to check the footage."

The park had cameras set up everywhere. Dad immediately got to his feet, ready to use the footage to silence me.

But before he could take a step, Heidi grabbed his arm in a hurry. "It's fine, Dad. Maybe someone else pushed me. I must have been mistaken…"

As she said that, her inner voice rang out in my mind: "Could I really have been mistaken? What should I do now? It seems like I've misunderstood Daniella..."

Heidi rested in Dad's arms, pretending to be weak with every breath she took. The sight of her sent a shiver racing down my spine.

"No matter what, it's still your fault for not watching over your sister properly," Dad said as he carried Heidi toward the ambulance. "As punishment, you'll walk home. You're not allowed to ride in my car!"

Without uttering a single word, I lowered my head, my eyes fixed on the map in front of me. I'd have to walk more than six miles just to get home.

Seeing them drive off, my heart sank completely.

Why did Heidi's inner voice seem so out of sync with her actions?

Was it possible that her inner voice wasn't being honest with me?

What if it wasn't even her voice at all?

After a moment's silence, "Heidi" let out a derisive scoff. "What's the fuss? Do you actually think you can lay a hand on me? I have powerful people—"Before she could finish speaking, someone suddenly lunged forward. It was Frank. Without a shred of hesitation, he struck her hard across the face. "You bitch! How dare you harm my sister-in-law!"A cold chuckle escaped me. "There's no point pretending anymore."Did you honestly think that staying in the shadows would keep you safe?"Don't forget—you had a hand in Heidi's death as well."My words drew Frank's attention, and he turned to look at me. His throat bobbed nervously as he asked, "Daniella, what exactly do you mean by that?"My anger surged as I stared at the two of them. "After all these years on the run, did you really think your past would remain hidden?"Frank had always been ruthless. Many of the businesses he seized from the Pruett family were connected to criminal operations. He was anything but honorable. It hadn

Everyone froze. Suddenly, all eyes were on me.I nodded. "I accept your proposal."Dad raised an eyebrow, clearly baffled. "Daniella, you've never gotten along with this man. What makes you want to involve yourself with him now?"A smile tugged at the corner of my lips. "Once I marry into the Pruett family, our status in Jansenburg will rise. What's the harm in that?"As I spoke, I couldn't help but steal a glance at Heidi. Her face was a mixture of shock and disbelief. "N-No! Mom! Dad! They can't get married!" she protested.Meanwhile, our parents seemed unfazed by her outburst. "Well, since Daniella has made her choice, there's little we can do to stop it. Shall we set a date?""I've already looked into it. Tomorrow works," Vernon interjected. With everything laid out in advance, the entire process proceeded without a hitch.Heidi, on the other hand, was in full panic mode. She darted to an empty corner and dialed Frank's number. "Frank! Your brother is going to marry my sist

As I saw Caleb's message, a surge of excitement ran through me. "Tell me everything," I quickly responded. The typing notification blinked on the screen. After a few moments, his reply came through. "The Pruett family has an illegitimate son who has been living away from them. After being brought back, he swiftly acquired 45% of Pruett Group's shares.""He's currently the largest shareholder of the company. If he gains support from another 10% of the shareholders, he'll have full control of the family's business. It's safe to assume that the male voice you overheard belonged to Frank Pruett."Everything suddenly made sense. Heidi's ambition to become the heiress was driven by her desire to marry Frank.Once Frank was tied to my family, he'd have no trouble securing the support of more shareholders.Still, I couldn't help but wonder why Frank would pick Heidi over anyone else.It was clear that there was more to their relationship than either of them was willing to admit.Frank w

At the gala, Heidi's luxurious gown captured everyone's attention. She was undeniably the focus of the evening. She wanted to solidify her standing as the second daughter of the Limebear family in the eyes of Jansenburg's young elite.Nonetheless, revealing her identity wasn't the only objective I had in mind."Truth be told, she's nothing more than a spoiled princess who depends on her family's influence. She doesn't have any real power.""So, is she what they call 'just a pretty face'? If that's the case, she doesn't even hold a candle to Ms. Daniella."As the crowd's whispers buzzed in the air, Heidi's expression soured. Suddenly, a realization hit her, and she turned her gaze toward me.I pretended not to care, a subtle smile tugging at the corner of my lips. From across the room, I lifted my glass, offering her a silent toast. The truth was, I had no real interest in these events. To me, they were nothing more than social spectacles meant to bolster family reputations and b

The thought sent a chill down my spine. No matter what the truth turned out to be, Heidi was undoubtedly more complicated than she appeared. Throughout the years she spent away from home, she must have gone through countless experiences that shaped who she had become.Realizing I hadn't responded, the police officer on the line reassured me, "Don't worry, Ms. Limebear. I'll keep investigating this matter. If any new information comes to light, I'll contact you immediately.""Thanks," I said quietly before ending the call. I began mentally sorting through the long list of enemies my family had accumulated over the years.Given how long we'd been in business, it wouldn't be shocking if we'd pissed off quite a few people in Jansenburg. Even so, only a few had the power to pull strings with the police. It didn't take long for me to settle on one suspect—the Pruett family. I typed out my suspicions in a message and sent it to the police officer I had spoken with earlier."Noted," cam

The moment our parents appeared, Heidi immediately recoiled. Her voice quivered as she asked, "Dad… Mom… What are you doing here?"As Dad looked at the scene before him, his face contorted with disbelief. "Heidi, what on earth is going on here?"Tears welled up in Mom's eyes as she rushed to help me to my feet. "Daniella, are you okay? Please, don't scare me like this!"Heidi swallowed hard. In an instant, she darted behind Dad. "Dad, you're here!" she exclaimed.Just before the blond thug could speak, Heidi scowled and shot him a pointed look.Without saying a single word, the thugs began to walk away. What they didn't know was that I had already contacted the police. Before they could get far, police officers surrounded them from every direction.Moments later, I was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. In reality, I hadn't lost consciousness; I'd only pretended to pass out to uncover Heidi's true nature. The doctor eventually confirmed that the shock had caused me
