Chapter 4

Autor: Goodtale
My counselor, Ms. Carter, turned a stack of papers around and pushed it toward me. It was a printout of the message board posts, with several long sections of comments highlighted.

She frowned and tapped the post. "The whole university is talking about this. Trying to one-up other students, flaunting your wealth, and bullying someone on financial aid have made the department look terrible. The administration is already asking questions. How about this… Apologize to Viola, and we can put this behind us."

I repeated the word. "Apologize? She threw a bloodstained bedsheet into my washbasin, spread lies on the message board that my father worked for the Lane family, that I was their servant, and turned the entire university against me. And you want me to apologize to her?"

Ms. Carter's expression darkened. "Watch your attitude. Are you trying to make this even worse?"

I stood up straight, and the chair legs screeched against the tile. "Ms. Carter, you don't have to worry about this. When my parents return to Central City, you can speak to them yourself."

Her frown deepened. "Then bring them here! I want to see what kind of parents could spoil a child this badly!"

"My father's name is Torben Lane. Would you like me to call him for you?" I said with a smile.

Her pen slipped from her hand and hit the desk. Her lips moved without a sound as she searched the directory and stopped at one name. The anger was instantly drained from her face, leaving her pale, with an unreadable expression on it. "You're... The daughter of Lane Group's chairman of the board? Why didn't you say so earlier?!"

I did not answer as I simply opened the door and left.

Before I reached the dorm, two figures approached from the far end of the tree-lined path.

Viola had linked her arm through Aaron's and pressed close against him. Her swollen eyes made it look as though she had just been crying. Aaron leaned toward her as he spoke, his expression gentle.

Then they saw me. Viola paused and clung to him even tighter while Aaron's expression turned cold, but Viola spoke first. "Eve, I didn't mean to do it. I honestly didn't know the post would turn into such a big problem. I only complained once in our dorm group chat. I don't know who took a screenshot and posted it. Please don't be angry with me. I'm sorry, alright?"

Tears welled up in her red eyes as she spoke while Aaron put an arm around her shoulders. The way they did that so easily grossed me out.

I suddenly laughed. "Are you done putting on this act? You've had your eyes on Aaron for a long time, haven't you? When he was my boyfriend, all you could do was play the weak and helpless damsel in front of him."

Aaron pulled her behind him and snapped at me. "Eve!"

I ignored him and kept smiling at Viola. "Let me make this clear today. You went to all this trouble to steal a piece of trash like Aaron? You shouldn't have bothered. You can have a loser like him for free."

Everything went silent for a moment, then Aaron raised his hand. My head rang, and I had no time to dodge as he slapped me hard on the left cheek.

It felt as though a hammer had struck my head. I staggered two steps sideways, and my knee hit the stairs, sending pain burning through it. My cheek was on fire. My ears rang, and stars burst in my vision.

Aaron stood over me on the steps, his chest heaving and his right hand clenched into a fist. "Eve, don't think I won't do it again. I've been too easy on you! Apologize to Viola now, or I'll make you do it!"

I raised my head and looked at him, then at Viola behind him. She pretended to be frightened, but she looked delighted.

There was no avoiding it now.

I pulled out my phone.

I blinked until my eyes watered and let my voice shake. "Dad, my boyfriend hit me. He said he would force me to apologize too..."

Laughter spread through the crowd. "Is your servant father coming along to apologize with you?"

Then, at that moment, the thundering sound of a helicopter surrounded the university. It was not long until a helicopter descended.

  • Lies Have Consequences   Chapter 7

I had been living off campus for a very long time to avoid Aaron and Viola. But one day after class, Viola still managed to corner me outside one of the academic buildings. She was crouching beneath the steps, curled into a ball. When she saw me come out, she stood up so quickly that she almost fell. Her wrinkled varsity jersey hung loosely around her figure. She was holding a large envelope so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. "Eve, please." She fell on the ground right in front of me. "I'm begging you. I really can't be expelled. My father hasn't answered my calls for three days." Tears rolled down her face as she spoke. "I know I was wrong. I was jealous of you, and I couldn't stand seeing you have everything. I worked so hard to get into Central University because I thought I could finally change my life, but I was still poor after I got here. I couldn't stand seeing you carry Chanel while Sophie casually handed you a bag worth thousands of dollars." She looked

Three days later, a financial news alert appeared on my phone just after I woke up: [Lane Group completes a twenty-seven-million-dollar acquisition of Sanders Technologies.] Sanders Technologies belonged to Aaron's father. I stared at the headline for several seconds while brushing my teeth, then opened the article and read the comments. The comment section had exploded after someone revealed that Sanders Technologies was already facing serious cash flow problems. Lane Group had taken advantage of the crisis, but the acquisition had been handled so cleanly that no one could object. In other words, Dad was furious. After I got dressed, I went downstairs and found Sophie at the dining table sipping coffee and reading from her tablet. She spoke without looking up. "Aaron's father kicked him out this morning." I pulled out a chair and sat down. "How do you know?" She rolled her eyes. "Our housekeeper's cousin lives in the same neighborhood as his housekeeper. Gossip travels f

The helicopter door opened, and my father stepped out, his black coat whipping in the winds raised by the rotors above. "Who dared lay a hand on my daughter?" Viola recovered first. She straightened her collar and hurried over, her voice sweet. "Mr. Lane, are you here to see Sophie? She is currently abroad, but I'm her roommate. You can tell me if you need anything." She paused, her eyes welling on cue, then pointed at me. "By the way, Mr. Lane, you probably don't know who she is. Her name is Eve. She uses the fact that she shares your last name to pass herself off as part of your family on campus. She even stole Sophie's Chanel purse. I saw it myself. You need to look into her." Aaron stepped forward with a furious expression. "Mr. Lane, I'm Aaron. Eve's behavior has been disgusting. She bullies other students, looks down on people from poor families, and Ms. Carter just called her in for a disciplinary meeting. Letting someone like her stay at Central University will damage Sop

  • Lies Have Consequences   Chapter 3

Back at the dorm, I pulled out a washbasin from under my bed. My sister would be back the day after tomorrow, so I needed to change her sheets. I stripped the bed, soaked the sheets in the basin, added detergent, then crouched on the floor and began scrubbing. Bubbles covered the backs of my hands. The door creaked open. Viola walked in carrying a bundle of dark bed sheets. When she saw me washing the sheets on the floor, she smirked. She came over, loosened her hands, and dropped the bundle into my basin. Foam splashed across my face. I looked down. A large dark red stain covered the pale fabric, which lay wet and sticky against my sister's sheets. I raised my head. "What are you doing?" Viola folded her arms and raised her head in front of me. "I'm on my period, and my stomach hurts too much to wash them. You're already doing laundry, so wash mine too. Isn't washing things for other people what you do best? We're all roommates. Why play favorites?" She looked thorou

Viola's eyes welled up with tears, but she held her head up high even as she loudly questioned me. "Eve, what gives you the right to talk to me like that? Yes, I'm poor. My family isn't well off too, and I've never carried a Chanel purse in my life. But you can't afford luxury goods either, so you became someone else's pet! What gives you the right to show off in front of me?" Everyone around us turned to stare at us while I simply laughed out of anger. I did not even mention her, but she was already playing the victim card. I stepped forward and looked down at her. "Viola, what makes you think I can't afford it?" Her lips opened, but Aaron let out a scornful laugh before she could answer it as he gave me an impatient look. "Eve, who are you trying to fool? Other people might not know how you live, but I do. You wear the same few outfits over and over, and you always order the cheapest food in the cafeteria. Last month, you spent forever calculating how to save five dollars on yo
