Chapter 2

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
“I think you scraped your arm when you fell today. Let me apply some–”

Before she could finish her sentence, she saw my arm, which had already been bandaged.

I withdrew my arm with an unbothered expression and said plainly, “It’s fine.”

By the time she actually remembered, the wound would’ve been infected ages ago.

Sage’s pride was hurt by my series of actions. With a grim expression, she tossed the medicine onto the table and walked straight into the study. That night, she slept in there alone, which suited me just fine.

The next morning, I got up early to wash up. Not long after, Sage walked out of the study looking visibly exhausted.

She wore a stunned expression as she stared closely at me. “Where are you going? Why are you up so early?”

I glanced back at her in surprise. She usually never bothered to care this much.

Before I could even speak, though, Sage’s phone suddenly rang. It was a popular song that Simon had recommended.

Sage hadn’t shown much of a reaction back then, yet behind my back, she had secretly set it as her ringtone. I remembered how her previous ringtone was one I had shamelessly changed while she was asleep.

I couldn’t help but sneer. I had gone to great lengths to win her heart, while Simon got it without lifting a finger. How ironic.

After answering the call, Sage stopped caring about what I was wearing or where I was going. With a smile on her face, she got ready and left in a hurry.

I took my time tidying up and took a cab to see Jake Johnson. He was getting married soon and planned to buy a house at Greenary Park, the most expensive neighborhood in the city.

I spent the entire morning picking out a house, and in the end, he settled on one he was satisfied with.

Right after completing the payment, he suddenly remembered something, pulled me aside, and said, “Peter, isn’t that house you like located here too? Let’s go and take a look! Give Sage a call and finalize it right now!”

Just as I was about to speak, I turned around and bumped right into Sage, who was supposed to be at work.

She was holding a purchase contract in her hand, looking down with a smile as she said to Simon, “A man needs to have a house of his own to build equity, or people will look down on you.”

Simon smiled sheepishly and said ingratiatingly, “Thank you, Sage… It’s just that this one is way too expensive–”

“If it’s too expensive, how do you have the cheek to take it?”

Jake, who had recovered from his shock, snickered and snatched the document right out of Sage’s hands. Looking down, he realized it was the exact house I had been eying for a whole year.

Sage had refused to buy it, saying there would be plenty of time to pick one after the wedding. Yet now, she was buying it for another man without a second thought.

The sales representatives around all recognized me, since I had come here no less than ten times this past year. At that moment, they gathered nearby, whispering among themselves and looking at me with sympathetic eyes.

Why wouldn’t they anyway? Anyone would find it pathetic to be played like a fool.

Jake’s face flushed red with rage, and he stepped forward to teach Simon a lesson on my behalf.

Simon looked at us innocently, and Sage immediately shielded him behind her back.

I held Jake back and comforted him, “Jake, it’s fine. Let me handle it.”

Sage’s brows were furrowed, but she didn’t look the slightest bit embarrassed at being caught red-handed. Instead, she looked somewhat impatient.

“Peter, we aren’t married yet. Don't you think you’re meddling a little too much in my affairs?”

I smiled and nodded in agreement. “I think so too, so let’s break up.”

As soon as the words left my mouth, the entire hall fell pin-drop silent.

Sage’s face turned deathly pale, and her jaws clenched tight. She looked absolutely furious.

Along the aisle stood our family and friends. They were thrilled, showering petal after petal over Chloe, while I stood at the end of the aisle in a tailored, sleek suit, looking at her, whose eyes were filled with love.We said our vows with smiles on our faces, but just as I was about to say “I do,” an uninvited guest suddenly crashed the ceremony.Sage burst in, her face covered in bruises and scars.“I object!” Tears mixed with blood streamed down her face as she said, as if resigned to fate, “Peter, don’t say yes! Come with me! Do you remember the promise between us?”For a split second, I was lost in thought, and it suddenly occurred to me that there seemed to be some sort of half-joking promise like that.Back then, we were watching a movie together. The male lead had separated from the female lead due to a misunderstanding, and in a fit of anger, she married someone else. The male lead eventually snapped back to his senses, risked everything, and crashed the wedding. In t

Meanwhile, I simply took a step back, creating a distance between us.“Peter, I’ve broken up with Simon. In the end, I didn’t even give him that house. I know I was wrong,” Sage pleaded. “I admit I’ve hurt you, but why won’t you give me a chance before passing a death sentence on me? How is that fair to me?”Fair? She had some nerve talking to me about fairness.During countless late nights in the past, I had waited for her to come back to me. Yet, what did she do? She pointed right at my nose time and time again, telling me, “You’re not my husband yet, so don’t interfere in my affairs. Even if we do get married, we need to set boundaries.”From that moment on, my heart began to waver. However, it wasn’t until I was brutally beaten by the crowd that I saw Sage’s real colors. She was a selfish, despicable, and shameless woman. As for those past years we shared together, I’d just consider myself to have been blind. I sighed and nodded to the bodyguards. They understood my meani

Sage must have expended a tremendous amount of effort to climb up the wall.I looked at her, feeling somewhat astonished. I remembered how she used to despise nothing more than people who refused to let go.Back then, while we were watching a movie together, we happened to run into a couple going through a breakup. The guy was begging desperately, relentlessly pestering the girl against her wishes.Sage couldn’t stand to watch it, so she stepped in and helped the girl out of the situation.Afterward, she remarked disdainfully, “I despise clingy people the most, especially men. Can’t they carry themselves with more dignity?”Although I agreed with her, I felt a subtle urge to test the waters, so I asked, “If we broke up and I tried to win you back, would you change your mind?”Without hesitation, Sage raised an eyebrow, pointed to herself, and asked me, “Don’t you know me by now? I hate desperate simps the most.”That was why I had been so confident that we wouldn’t have too much

I watched nervously as a Rolls-Royce slowly pulled into the courtyard. As I walked down the stairs to greet the guests, I suddenly caught sight of a familiar face.Chloe Benedict? She, however, didn’t seem as surprised as I was. Instead, she offered me a very calm and composed smile. She was already quite the beauty, but when she smiled, she was simply breathtaking. My face flushed red as I suddenly recalled an embarrassing incident from the past. Back in my high school days, Chloe was our school’s homecoming queen. She had countless admirers, and my friend happened to be one of them.He had written a love letter, but he was too shy to deliver it, so he begged me to go in his place. As I had always been bold, I stormed right into her homeroom holding the love letter. Seeing that she wasn’t there, I slipped it into her locker. Two days later, she suddenly cornered me on a quiet path. The Chloe then was cool and aloof. With few words, she pulled out the letter, looked at me, and sa

She stared at the newly replaced door lock with her brows furrowed. She was a little annoyed that I was getting increasingly spoiled and short-tempered, so much so that I had even changed the door lock. After sitting at the doorstep and smoking a cigarette, she began to apologize again. “Peter, I’m cold. Can you open the door?“There are so many bugs out here. When did you become so cruel? You don’t seem like yourself anymore.”After an eerie, dead silence, Sage suddenly stood up. She understood that sitting around waiting would lead nowhere. So, she walked around the house and finally discovered an unlocked window.Sage had a habit of rock climbing, so she easily scrambled inside. She smiled triumphantly and called out, “Peter, let’s see what else you–”In the very next second, she stopped, because the inside of the house was so brand-new it looked like a model home. Her expression darkened, and she hurriedly began searching through the house. Yet, after combing through the ent

Sage couldn’t bear to watch any longer, so she stepped in front of him and said, “Peter, you have so many clothes. What’s the big deal if he wears them for a bit? It’s not like he won’t return them to you.”What was the big deal? I found it repulsive. Who knew what the two of them had done while wearing my clothes? With the last bit of my patience exhausted, I flung her hand away, turned around, and slammed the door shut behind me.Just a few steps after walking out the door, rapid footsteps sounded from behind. I felt my wrist being yanked, and immediately after, I was pulled into a tight embrace. Sage gripped me so hard it made it difficult for me to breathe.Panic bled through her voice. “Peter, don’t leave! Listen to me. Everything you just saw was a misunderstanding.”I didn’t struggle. Once she calmed down and let go of me, I even thoughtfully adjusted her collar.“I understand. It was all a misunderstanding. When people get drunk, getting into bed is bound to happen.”Sag
