Chapter 3

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
“Peter, do you know what you’re talking about?” she blurted out recklessly. “You’re almost thirty. You’re not getting any younger. Do you really think you can find anyone better than me?”

What a boastful thing to say. Unfortunately for her, not only could I find someone better, but that person would also beat her by a mile.

I glanced at her coldly. Despite her agitation, I said calmly, “You don’t need to worry about that.”

After that, I ignored her completely, grabbed the indignant Jake, and walked away.

Along the way, Jake’s face was filled with regret. “Dude, I’m so sorry. I didn’t expect…”

I stopped in my tracks and patted his shoulder.

“Jake, I’m getting married.”

Jake froze, stammering, not knowing what to say.

I burst out laughing. “It’s not Sage. It’s an arranged marriage by my family.”

Jake let out a sigh of relief as he hugged me and said, “You’d better send me an invitation when the time comes.”

“Of course!”

After chatting for a few hours, we patted each other on the shoulder and said goodbye. I couldn’t help but sigh to myself that the next time we met would be at my wedding.

When I got home and pulled out my keys to open the door, it suddenly swung open without any warning. Startled, I looked up to see that Sage was actually home.

I brushed past her, walked inside, and said unhurriedly, “I rented this place. Since we’ve broken up, you shouldn’t be here anymore.”

She avoided answering, so I stopped talking.

As I bent down to take off my boots, Sage held out her hand to take my coat. I found it odd how attentive Sage was. Nevertheless, I gave them to her and walked straight into the bedroom.

I originally intended to change into my pajamas, but to my surprise, Sage followed me in. My hands froze mid-action as I was taking off my clothes.

Sage noticed it and bit her lower lip. Immediately after, she cleared her throat and pretended not to notice.

She walked over to the closet and feigned a relaxed tone. “Why is the closet so empty? I’ve found a lot of new styles this season. Let me buy you a few outfits. You look good in suits.”

As she spoke, she pulled out her phone to show me the clothes she had found. However, I was looking down, replying to my mother’s text, and didn’t look up.

Her body stiffened for two seconds. Then, she leaned in close to me and said affectionately, “Who are you chatting with that has you so absorbed?”

I was checking my flight timing, and when I saw her leaning in, I immediately closed the page.

“Nobody.”

A continuous series of rejections put her in a really low mood. Still, she forced a weak smile.

In a gentle tone, she said, “About your dream to have the wedding on Groto Island, my mom has agreed to it.”

After saying that, she stole a glance at me from the corner of her eye.

Having a wedding on Groto Island had always been my dream. However, her mother didn’t agree because she hated the water.

Sage was a mommy’s girl, so she told me that if her mother didn’t agree, we wouldn’t be allowed to have the wedding there. Even though it made me sad, the old me was willing to compromise for the sake of love.

Now that I had snapped out of it… Whoever wanted my two-faced ex-girlfriend and a backwards, difficult mother-in-law could have them. So when I heard the news, I wasn’t the least bit fazed.

Sage was stunned. In her mind, even if I wasn’t ecstatic, I should have at least pulled her into a happy kiss. The only thing she didn’t expect from me was this indifferent look.

After a brief moment of confusion, she became convinced that I was playing hard to get. She flew into a rage and jumped to her feet.

Looking down at me condescendingly, she said pointedly, “Peter, don’t you feel like you’ve been getting out of line lately?”

Along the aisle stood our family and friends. They were thrilled, showering petal after petal over Chloe, while I stood at the end of the aisle in a tailored, sleek suit, looking at her, whose eyes were filled with love.We said our vows with smiles on our faces, but just as I was about to say “I do,” an uninvited guest suddenly crashed the ceremony.Sage burst in, her face covered in bruises and scars.“I object!” Tears mixed with blood streamed down her face as she said, as if resigned to fate, “Peter, don’t say yes! Come with me! Do you remember the promise between us?”For a split second, I was lost in thought, and it suddenly occurred to me that there seemed to be some sort of half-joking promise like that.Back then, we were watching a movie together. The male lead had separated from the female lead due to a misunderstanding, and in a fit of anger, she married someone else. The male lead eventually snapped back to his senses, risked everything, and crashed the wedding. In t

Meanwhile, I simply took a step back, creating a distance between us.“Peter, I’ve broken up with Simon. In the end, I didn’t even give him that house. I know I was wrong,” Sage pleaded. “I admit I’ve hurt you, but why won’t you give me a chance before passing a death sentence on me? How is that fair to me?”Fair? She had some nerve talking to me about fairness.During countless late nights in the past, I had waited for her to come back to me. Yet, what did she do? She pointed right at my nose time and time again, telling me, “You’re not my husband yet, so don’t interfere in my affairs. Even if we do get married, we need to set boundaries.”From that moment on, my heart began to waver. However, it wasn’t until I was brutally beaten by the crowd that I saw Sage’s real colors. She was a selfish, despicable, and shameless woman. As for those past years we shared together, I’d just consider myself to have been blind. I sighed and nodded to the bodyguards. They understood my meani

Sage must have expended a tremendous amount of effort to climb up the wall.I looked at her, feeling somewhat astonished. I remembered how she used to despise nothing more than people who refused to let go.Back then, while we were watching a movie together, we happened to run into a couple going through a breakup. The guy was begging desperately, relentlessly pestering the girl against her wishes.Sage couldn’t stand to watch it, so she stepped in and helped the girl out of the situation.Afterward, she remarked disdainfully, “I despise clingy people the most, especially men. Can’t they carry themselves with more dignity?”Although I agreed with her, I felt a subtle urge to test the waters, so I asked, “If we broke up and I tried to win you back, would you change your mind?”Without hesitation, Sage raised an eyebrow, pointed to herself, and asked me, “Don’t you know me by now? I hate desperate simps the most.”That was why I had been so confident that we wouldn’t have too much

I watched nervously as a Rolls-Royce slowly pulled into the courtyard. As I walked down the stairs to greet the guests, I suddenly caught sight of a familiar face.Chloe Benedict? She, however, didn’t seem as surprised as I was. Instead, she offered me a very calm and composed smile. She was already quite the beauty, but when she smiled, she was simply breathtaking. My face flushed red as I suddenly recalled an embarrassing incident from the past. Back in my high school days, Chloe was our school’s homecoming queen. She had countless admirers, and my friend happened to be one of them.He had written a love letter, but he was too shy to deliver it, so he begged me to go in his place. As I had always been bold, I stormed right into her homeroom holding the love letter. Seeing that she wasn’t there, I slipped it into her locker. Two days later, she suddenly cornered me on a quiet path. The Chloe then was cool and aloof. With few words, she pulled out the letter, looked at me, and sa

She stared at the newly replaced door lock with her brows furrowed. She was a little annoyed that I was getting increasingly spoiled and short-tempered, so much so that I had even changed the door lock. After sitting at the doorstep and smoking a cigarette, she began to apologize again. “Peter, I’m cold. Can you open the door?“There are so many bugs out here. When did you become so cruel? You don’t seem like yourself anymore.”After an eerie, dead silence, Sage suddenly stood up. She understood that sitting around waiting would lead nowhere. So, she walked around the house and finally discovered an unlocked window.Sage had a habit of rock climbing, so she easily scrambled inside. She smiled triumphantly and called out, “Peter, let’s see what else you–”In the very next second, she stopped, because the inside of the house was so brand-new it looked like a model home. Her expression darkened, and she hurriedly began searching through the house. Yet, after combing through the ent

Sage couldn’t bear to watch any longer, so she stepped in front of him and said, “Peter, you have so many clothes. What’s the big deal if he wears them for a bit? It’s not like he won’t return them to you.”What was the big deal? I found it repulsive. Who knew what the two of them had done while wearing my clothes? With the last bit of my patience exhausted, I flung her hand away, turned around, and slammed the door shut behind me.Just a few steps after walking out the door, rapid footsteps sounded from behind. I felt my wrist being yanked, and immediately after, I was pulled into a tight embrace. Sage gripped me so hard it made it difficult for me to breathe.Panic bled through her voice. “Peter, don’t leave! Listen to me. Everything you just saw was a misunderstanding.”I didn’t struggle. Once she calmed down and let go of me, I even thoughtfully adjusted her collar.“I understand. It was all a misunderstanding. When people get drunk, getting into bed is bound to happen.”Sag
