Chapter 4

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
Although it was phrased as a question, she didn’t actually care to hear my response. So, she went ahead and passed judgment on me herself.

“You’d better think this through. I’m beautiful and successful. Once you miss out on me, you will never get another chance.”

With that, she grabbed her coat and slammed the door shut as she stormed out.

I stood up, having had no chance to speak—not that I was going to beg for her forgiveness anyway. I just wanted her to leave her key behind.

After packing up my belongings, there were still a few of Sage’s things left in the house. As such, I pulled out a large bag and stuffed everything inside in one go.

The remaining things were our photo prints and travel souvenirs. There were souvenirs from every new country we visited, picking fruit at an orchard, and me teaching her archery. However, there were simply too many, and I was too lazy to go through them one by one.

I had been the only one keeping them all along, like a one-man show. Since she probably wouldn’t care if they were gone anyway, I opened the door and threw them into the trash.

Early the next morning, I typed up my resignation letter and headed to the company. After turning in my resignation, a close coworker suddenly grabbed my arm with an awkward look on his face.

“Dude, could you deliver this bag to Ms. Arnold’s home for me? My stomach is hurting so bad, and I need to see the doctor.”

Sage didn’t want to make our relationship public, so my coworkers didn’t know about us.

I hesitated for a few seconds before agreeing. Although I didn’t want to see her, I could use the trip to retrieve the things I had left at her house.

When I arrived, I knocked on the door, but no one answered. So, I typed in the passcode and walked in. As I walked through the door, the scene inside made me stop in my tracks.

An overwhelming stench of alcohol hit me, and clothes were scattered all over the floor. Sounds were also coming from the bathroom—someone taking a shower.

In the next second, the sound of the shower stopped, and someone walked out while drying his hair with a towel.

Speaking with the swagger of the master of the house, he said, “Just put the stuff down right there and head out.”

Catching sight of me from the corner of his eye, Simon suddenly stopped. A hint of glee flashed in his eyes, but he immediately covered his mouth and feigned panic.

“Peter, why are you here?”

Hearing Simon’s voice, a flurry of hurried footsteps echoed from the bedroom.

Immediately after, Sage walked out, pretending to be calm. Yet she couldn’t even pull off a full act as all the buttons on her shirt were misaligned.

Sage forced a smile and explained, “Simon had nowhere to go last night, so I took him in for the night. Don’t… overthink it.”

Simon acted very obediently and came forward to take the bag from my hand. However, in the next second, the bag suddenly ripped open, and a strip of pills fell out. It was a well-known brand of morning-after pill.

Sage looked absolutely horrified, and she immediately bent down to pick it up. Watching her attempt to cover up her actions, I felt nothing besides finding it somewhat funny.

However, the moment I turned my head, my gaze landed on Simon, and only then did I notice that he was wearing my clothes. They were the ones my mom had gifted me for my twentieth birthday.

Fighting back the nausea I felt inside, I forced myself to keep my anger in check and said, “Take off those clothes right now.”

Simon looked at me with a troubled expression and said in an aggrieved tone, “I don’t have any other clothes to wear. Peter, please just lend them to me for a bit.”

I sneered and kicked the balled-up clothes on the floor. “Aren’t these clothes?”

Simon’s face went stiff, and his knuckles cracked as he clenched his fists.

“Peter, why do you have to be such a bully? Do you think humiliating me is fun?”

Along the aisle stood our family and friends. They were thrilled, showering petal after petal over Chloe, while I stood at the end of the aisle in a tailored, sleek suit, looking at her, whose eyes were filled with love.We said our vows with smiles on our faces, but just as I was about to say “I do,” an uninvited guest suddenly crashed the ceremony.Sage burst in, her face covered in bruises and scars.“I object!” Tears mixed with blood streamed down her face as she said, as if resigned to fate, “Peter, don’t say yes! Come with me! Do you remember the promise between us?”For a split second, I was lost in thought, and it suddenly occurred to me that there seemed to be some sort of half-joking promise like that.Back then, we were watching a movie together. The male lead had separated from the female lead due to a misunderstanding, and in a fit of anger, she married someone else. The male lead eventually snapped back to his senses, risked everything, and crashed the wedding. In t

Meanwhile, I simply took a step back, creating a distance between us.“Peter, I’ve broken up with Simon. In the end, I didn’t even give him that house. I know I was wrong,” Sage pleaded. “I admit I’ve hurt you, but why won’t you give me a chance before passing a death sentence on me? How is that fair to me?”Fair? She had some nerve talking to me about fairness.During countless late nights in the past, I had waited for her to come back to me. Yet, what did she do? She pointed right at my nose time and time again, telling me, “You’re not my husband yet, so don’t interfere in my affairs. Even if we do get married, we need to set boundaries.”From that moment on, my heart began to waver. However, it wasn’t until I was brutally beaten by the crowd that I saw Sage’s real colors. She was a selfish, despicable, and shameless woman. As for those past years we shared together, I’d just consider myself to have been blind. I sighed and nodded to the bodyguards. They understood my meani

Sage must have expended a tremendous amount of effort to climb up the wall.I looked at her, feeling somewhat astonished. I remembered how she used to despise nothing more than people who refused to let go.Back then, while we were watching a movie together, we happened to run into a couple going through a breakup. The guy was begging desperately, relentlessly pestering the girl against her wishes.Sage couldn’t stand to watch it, so she stepped in and helped the girl out of the situation.Afterward, she remarked disdainfully, “I despise clingy people the most, especially men. Can’t they carry themselves with more dignity?”Although I agreed with her, I felt a subtle urge to test the waters, so I asked, “If we broke up and I tried to win you back, would you change your mind?”Without hesitation, Sage raised an eyebrow, pointed to herself, and asked me, “Don’t you know me by now? I hate desperate simps the most.”That was why I had been so confident that we wouldn’t have too much

I watched nervously as a Rolls-Royce slowly pulled into the courtyard. As I walked down the stairs to greet the guests, I suddenly caught sight of a familiar face.Chloe Benedict? She, however, didn’t seem as surprised as I was. Instead, she offered me a very calm and composed smile. She was already quite the beauty, but when she smiled, she was simply breathtaking. My face flushed red as I suddenly recalled an embarrassing incident from the past. Back in my high school days, Chloe was our school’s homecoming queen. She had countless admirers, and my friend happened to be one of them.He had written a love letter, but he was too shy to deliver it, so he begged me to go in his place. As I had always been bold, I stormed right into her homeroom holding the love letter. Seeing that she wasn’t there, I slipped it into her locker. Two days later, she suddenly cornered me on a quiet path. The Chloe then was cool and aloof. With few words, she pulled out the letter, looked at me, and sa

She stared at the newly replaced door lock with her brows furrowed. She was a little annoyed that I was getting increasingly spoiled and short-tempered, so much so that I had even changed the door lock. After sitting at the doorstep and smoking a cigarette, she began to apologize again. “Peter, I’m cold. Can you open the door?“There are so many bugs out here. When did you become so cruel? You don’t seem like yourself anymore.”After an eerie, dead silence, Sage suddenly stood up. She understood that sitting around waiting would lead nowhere. So, she walked around the house and finally discovered an unlocked window.Sage had a habit of rock climbing, so she easily scrambled inside. She smiled triumphantly and called out, “Peter, let’s see what else you–”In the very next second, she stopped, because the inside of the house was so brand-new it looked like a model home. Her expression darkened, and she hurriedly began searching through the house. Yet, after combing through the ent

Sage couldn’t bear to watch any longer, so she stepped in front of him and said, “Peter, you have so many clothes. What’s the big deal if he wears them for a bit? It’s not like he won’t return them to you.”What was the big deal? I found it repulsive. Who knew what the two of them had done while wearing my clothes? With the last bit of my patience exhausted, I flung her hand away, turned around, and slammed the door shut behind me.Just a few steps after walking out the door, rapid footsteps sounded from behind. I felt my wrist being yanked, and immediately after, I was pulled into a tight embrace. Sage gripped me so hard it made it difficult for me to breathe.Panic bled through her voice. “Peter, don’t leave! Listen to me. Everything you just saw was a misunderstanding.”I didn’t struggle. Once she calmed down and let go of me, I even thoughtfully adjusted her collar.“I understand. It was all a misunderstanding. When people get drunk, getting into bed is bound to happen.”Sag
