Chapter 2

Aвтор: Miracle Worker
"Ms. Chain, you're awake!" A nurse's voice pulled me out of unconsciousness.

"My baby..." I spoke with great effort.

"Congratulations! It's a boy. His condition is stable now, but the situation isn't optimistic. We'll need to monitor him closely," the nurse replied softly.

At that moment, the door to the hospital room gently opened, and Jeremy Glen, my bodyguard, walked in, his eyes filled with barely concealed sorrow.

"Mrs. Springton, you're awake," he greeted me in a low voice.

My heart clenched. "How are Dawson and Felicia? Are they okay?"

Jeremy's eyes turned red instantly. He shook his head. "Mr. and Mrs. Springton... couldn't make it."

My world collapsed in an instant. As if a boulder was crushing my chest, I couldn't breathe.

"What about Elson? Did he come to see them one last time?" I struggled to ask the question.

Jeremy avoided my gaze. "Mr. Springton hasn't come back yet."

I closed my eyes and let the tears fall freely.

My child was in critical condition, my in-laws had passed away, and my husband was nowhere to be found.

"Mrs. Springton, Mr. and Mrs. Springton left this for you." Jeremy handed me a tablet.

After watching the video on the tablet, I sat frozen, unable to snap out of it.

Then, I accidentally opened Elson's social media account.

His latest post showed a photo of an airport lounge and a plane ticket, with the caption, "I'll see you soon. Wait for me."

So Dawson and Felicia must have seen this and completely lost faith in Elson.

I sat up. "I need to see Felicia and Dawson one last time and arrange the funeral."

Jeremy rushed to stop me. "Mrs. Springton, your body..."

"I'm fine." I forced myself out of bed despite the pain. The postpartum wounds were still aching, but I couldn't collapse.

With Elson abroad, I was the only one left in the Springton family who could handle Dawson and Felicia's funeral.

The night before the funeral, I kept vigil in front of the memorial chapel, gently touching Dawson's and Felicia's portraits.

Suddenly, the doors were flung open. Elson stood there in the doorway, and behind him stood Yvie, smiling.

I froze. I couldn't believe my eyes.

"Dad! Mom!" Elson shouted as he rushed into the memorial chapel. He looked around, and when his gaze landed on the altar, his face instantly turned ashen. "What kind of sick joke is this?" He turned toward me with bloodshot eyes.

Yvie clung to his arm, eyes brimming with tears as she looked at me. "Monica, no matter the situation, you mustn't joke about something like this!"

"Mr. Springton, Mr. and Mrs. Springton have indeed—" Jeremy stepped forward to explain.

"Shut up!" Elson shoved Jeremy forcefully, making the elderly man stagger back. "You're all in on this, aren't you? How dare you try to trick me?" Elson approached me.

With trembling hands, I pulled the hospital's death certificates and funeral home documents from my bag.

"They were taken to the hospital the day the accident happened, but… they couldn't be saved..."

Elson snatched the documents from me and tore them to pieces that fell like snowflakes. When he walked up to the altar and stared at his parents' portraits, he suddenly let out a cold laugh.

"Dad, Mom, quit messing around and come out already." His voice rang out jarringly in the stillness of the memorial chapel.

I trembled all over as I pointed at the two cold coffins. "Elson! Felicia and Dawson… They're gone!"

"Shut up!" he suddenly turned and roared at me. Without warning, he swept the wreaths off the altar.

"Mr. Springton! You mustn't do that! This is Mr. and Mrs. Springton's memorial!" Jeremy lunged forward to stop him, only for Elson to shove the elderly Jeremy away again.

"Elson! Are you insane?" I rushed forward, trying to stop him.

Elson, his eyes bloodshot, lashed out—his hand connecting my cheek in a sharp smack that reverberated through the quiet memorial chapel.

A burning pain immediately shot across my cheek as the blow knocked me back several steps into a cold marble column.

As I had grown weak after giving birth and having gone through days of exhaustion, I soon lost consciousness.

Elson looked up with tears streaming down his face."What should I do? Monica, what should I do..." he asked, like a drowning man clutching at his last straw. For a moment, I almost sympathized with him. But then I thought of my son, alone in the incubator."Yvie's out of the hospital now, isn't she? You two can start over," I said coldly.A flicker of hope flashed in Elson's eyes, but it quickly dimmed."Start over? With a woman who wanted me dead?""That's your choice, just like how it was your choice to betray me."Elson suddenly burst into hysterical laughter filled with despair and madness."I'm finished... I have nothing left..." he mumbled, his eyes vacant.I gave him one last look, then turned and walked away. This time, there was no shouting behind me—only the sound of a broken man's sobs.I got into the car without looking back. The engine started, and the scenery outside the window blurred as it sped past. After the court hearing, Elson completely broke down a

Three months later, I had fully taken over all of Springton Group's affairs.News of Elson and Yvie would occasionally reach me.Apparently, they had been kicked out of the Springton family villa and were now living in a small apartment.Elson tried to find a job, but no one was willing to hire someone disowned by his family.Meanwhile, Yvie's illness seemed to have relapsed, but this time, Elson had no money to take her abroad for treatment.I would visit my son from time to time—he was slowly growing up in the hospital incubator. The doctor said he was improving and would be discharged soon. One day, I received a letter from a lawyer stating that Elson was suing me and demanding a redistribution of the inheritance. In court, he tearfully recounted how he had been deceived and how much he regretted everything. After hearing all the evidence, the judge dismissed his case on the spot.As I walked out of the courthouse, Elson blocked my path."Monica, I know I was wrong. I remembered how severe my morning sickness was during the early stages of pregnancy. I often couldn't sleep at all through the night. When Felicia found out, she immediately brought in a renowned nutritionist from abroad, who created a customized pregnancy meal plan for me. The Springton family even hired a chef from a three-Michelin-star restaurant. One time, I mentioned craving a snack from my hometown. The next day, Dawson had someone go and bring it back just for me."It's freshly made. Quickly, try it," he urged with a smile, his eyes full of fatherly affection. When I was four months pregnant, Felicia suddenly dragged me out for a shopping trip. We spent the entire day visiting the city's most upscale baby stores."This blue onesie is so cute. We're getting it," Felicia said as she picked it out. "This pink one is nice too. We'll take it as well.""Mom, we don't even know yet if it's a boy or a girl," I reminded her with a smile."In that case, we'll buy both boy and gi

"No, this can't be real!" Elson roared, nearly tearing the will to shreds. However, the lawyer stopped him in time and pulled a USB drive from his briefcase. "Mr. Springton, this is a recorded video will from your parents. Would you like to see it?"After I took the USB and inserted it into my laptop, Dawson and Felicia's final footage appeared on the screen.Felicia's face was streaked with tears."Monica, if you're seeing this video, it means we're already gone."Elson, trembling all over, collapsed to the ground.Dawson continued, "We know Elson treated you badly, but please don't hold it against him. We spoiled him too much growing up. I've written the will—everything will go to you and your son. Elson gets 50 million dollars in cash. If he wants a divorce, just let him go. I've made it clear in the will. Once the divorce is finalized, Elson will be disowned."Elson has gone mad over his adopted sister…"Dawson's face was filled with disappointment as he spoke about Elson,

"That's impossible! Try another card!" Elson frantically pulled out several cards. The staff swiped them again and again, but the result was the same each time. The hall gradually quieted down, and all eyes turned in our direction.Elson was visibly flustered. His forehead was covered in sweat."Check it! I want it checked! How dare anyone touch my accounts!"I slowly stood up and walked toward the front. "I'll take this painting," I announced.I handed over a black premium card. The staff looked at the card in surprise, then looked at me. "Certainly, ma'am."Elson whipped his head around to stare at me with disbelief and suspicion in his eyes. "It was you… What did you do, Monica?"Yvie's face turned pale. "Elson, what's going on?"Elson's eyes were bloodshot, and he pointed at me like a cornered beast. "It was you, wasn't it? Did you do something?"His voice echoed through the auction hall, drawing more attention.I simply looked at him calmly and lifted my hand slightly

After Dawson and Felicia were buried, I was bedridden for an entire month. My body was already weak from childbirth, and the emotional trauma nearly took my life.Fortunately, I survived.A month later, a charity auction was held at the most luxurious hotel in the city.Dressed in a simple black suit, I sat quietly in a corner.Among the items being auctioned was an oil painting—"Spring Breeze"—Felicia's favorite during her lifetime.I waited patiently for it to appear as I was determined to win it at any cost.Suddenly, the crowd stirred. People instinctively stepped aside to make way.Elson then walked in, arm-in-arm with Yvie, who was wearing a striking red dress.Yvie glanced around the room before her gaze landed on me. She patted Elson's arm and whispered something in his ear.At that, Elson turned to look at me. His eyes first showed surprise, then contempt.Still clinging to his arm, Yvie slowly walked toward me."Oh, Monica? You came, too," she said sweetly but lou
