Chapter 7

Author: Mohini
After entering the sanatorium, Dr. Ollie Joseph drew the heavy curtains across the windows and door, shutting out all outside noise for me. He then skillfully lit the fireplace, quietly adding firewood.

There were countless moments when I wanted to explain what had just happened, but he didn’t press me to say anything.

He stared at the flickering flames in the stove, speaking with a hint of melancholy, “Letting go of love is really hard. Take your time."

I was momentarily stunned before softly replying with a grunt.

The peaceful atmosphere in the room was suddenly interrupted by a nurse coming in to deliver my medicine. She was always cheerful and loud, and as she mixed the medicine for me, she muttered under her breath, "Men, huh? It’s not like he’s the only one in the world. What’s so hard about it? Just kick him to the curb and find someone new."

Her words made me burst into laughter, giggling uncontrollably, but as I thought about it, what she said made a lot of sense.

I was briefly stunned, then started coughing violently.Ollie immediately helped me sit up and brought the glass of milk to my lips. “Blow on it. Be careful, it’s hot.”Sensing the moment, the young nurse tactfully fell silent and quietly exited the room.I cradled the cup and drank the milk in one go, finally quenching the thirst that had lingered all night. Ollie simply watched me drink, then reached out to wipe the remaining milk from the corner of my mouth with his fingers. At that moment, my phone buzzed with a few new messages.[Joy, I know you don’t want to take my calls, but I still want to let you know. I’ve buried our son’s body in the city cemetery. If you’d like, you can visit him. Don’t worry about me disturbing you. I’ve made my choice. I’ll disappear from this world forever. Be happy.]…My heart trembled slightly, but then a wave of calm washed over me. I quietly set my phone down.Ollie noticed my expression and searched my face intently for a moment. After a w

I ignored him and didn’t want to speak to him anymore, but his grip tightened. He asked again, “I’m asking you—who is he?”Before I could answer, Ollie pulled me behind him, completely shielding me with his body. He faced Jake coldly, his voice cutting through the air like ice as he stated, “I’m her doctor. If you had a shred of conscience, you wouldn’t have dumped a perfectly sane person in a psychiatric hospital to suffer through that kind of torment. Doing that—what makes you any different from scum?” Ollie, who was normally reserved and composed, rarely spoke so much, let alone with such emotion.Jake clenched his teeth and, without warning, landed a punch squarely on Ollie, knocking him to the ground. His emotions were utterly out of control. “This is between me and Joy! Stay out of it. You’re an outsider!”I quickly rushed forward to help Ollie up, this time positioning myself between him and Jake. I glared at Jake with deep disgust, his arrogance grating on me. “You’ve alr

The moment I saw who had arrived, my drowsiness instantly vanished. He didn’t leave me any room for negotiation. Grabbing my arm, Jake hauled me to my feet.My first instinct was that Jake had found out about Luna’s pregnancy and had rushed here to finalize the divorce, so I didn’t resist too much. Dusting the snow off my coat, I calmly looked at him.“Have you made up your mind?”Jake seemed utterly confused by my words, furrowing his brows before reaching out to adjust my hat. “Do you have to keep pretending to be happy just to torture me, forcing me to come looking for you again and again?”I almost laughed. Jake was as self-absorbed as ever, convinced that the world revolved around him. Looking him straight in the eye, I replied, “You’re overthinking it. I truly am happy spending time with my friends.”As soon as I said that, Jake reacted as if he’d just heard the world’s biggest joke. Tilting his head back, he let out a bitter laugh for what felt like forever before licking h

Ever since I returned to my hometown, my mental resilience was no longer what it used to be. But small towns have their own perks—staying in a secluded sanatorium felt more comfortable than being at home.As Dr. Joseph put it, I somehow managed to find a place even war wouldn’t discover. It suited me just fine. Now that I was all alone, I had no attachments to the outside world.I blew on the hot milk for ages before taking a sip. Just then, the phone Dr. Joseph had set aside rang again. He was about to hand it to me, but I waved it off."No need. I don’t even have to guess who it is. I’m not answering."The two of us sat in silence. After dinner, I joined the nurses outside for a snowball fight. Dr. Joseph hurled a snowball the size of a fist at me, instantly igniting my competitive spirit. While I was busy packing another snowball, the sound of crunching footsteps in the snow drew closer. A pair of leather shoes suddenly entered my line of sight. I struggled to look up, and when

Before the nurse could finish speaking, I opened the video she had sent.Jake was calmly adjusting his attire backstage. His tie matched perfectly with Luna’s evening gown. Following my instructions, the nurse had brought the cryogenic container with the fetus to him.Recognizing the nurse, Jake paused mid-adjustment of his tie and said mockingly, "Did she send you here? Given how petty she is... could there be a bomb in here?"The room of makeup artists and stylists erupted in laughter. The nurse, however, placed the container on the table and said calmly, “Miss Joy asked me to deliver this to you as a gift."Luna frowned coquettishly and looked at the container with disdain. "Jake, what good could possibly be in there? Just have someone throw it out. The awards ceremony is about to start."Jake let out a scoff and gestured for his assistant to get rid of the box. However, the nurse held on tightly and warned him once more, "Miss Joy was very clear—you must open it yourself."A
