Chapter 23: The Core of the Machine

"Move! The air-shield isn't going to hold another ten seconds!" Thalen shoved Zeyric through the splintered floorboards, tumbling down after him into the vertical dark of the utility shaft.

Zeyric hit the rusted iron grating beneath them with a breathless grunt, rolling onto his side to absorb the impact. "Next time you decide to collapse a floor with raw mana, give a countdown! My ribs just took the brunt of that drop!"

"You're alive, aren't you?" Thalen hissed, dropping into a low crouch beside him. His rapier was already drawn, the steel gleaming faintly in the oppressive subterranean gloom. "And your ribs are my ribs right now. I felt the bruise hit my left side before you even hit the iron. Stop whining and listen."

Above them, the deafening crash of Malakor's heavy oak door breaking open echoed down the narrow shaft, followed by the dry, furious rasp of the Vice-Headmaster’s voice.

"Search the perimeter!" Malakor’s order reverberated through the ventilation grates. "They couldn't have vanished into thin air! Check the lower conduit hatches!"

"He’s right above us," Zeyric whispered, scrambling to his knees. The heat in the shaft was staggering—a thick, greasy wave of boiling steam and charged ozone that made every breath burn down the back of his throat. "Where the hell does this tunnel lead?"

"Look down," Thalen replied, gesturing with the tip of his blade toward the edge of the rusted catwalk.

Zeyric crawled forward and peered over the railing. The breath caught instantly in his chest.

Sprawling hundreds of feet below them in a cavernous, subterranean vault was a colossal machine of bronze, blackened steel, and glowing crystalline tubing. It was massive—the size of a cathedral—its titanic brass boilers pulsing with a rhythmic, mechanical heartbeat that vibrated straight through the iron soles of their boots. Huge, sweeping copper conduits snaked across the stone ceiling like the roots of an ancient, petrified tree, branching outward toward the academy's upper foundations.

"The central power core," Zeyric murmured, his eyes wide. "They told us the academy’s barrier wards were powered by geothermal ley-line tap."

"Look closer at the fluid lines," Thalen said, his voice tightening into a razor-sharp edge. He reached out, his fingers catching Zeyric’s jaw to turn his head toward the central glass manifold. "That’s not geothermal steam. Ley-line energy burns azure. Look at the hue."

Zeyric narrowed his eyes against the blistering glare. Inside the translucent tubes, the liquid energy was swirling with an unmistakable, sickly luminescence—a pale, milky violet laced with silver filaments that thrashed like trapped nerves.

"It’s soul-essence," Zeyric breathed, the color draining completely from his face. "Malakor isn't just experimenting with resonance curses on individual students. He’s running the entire academy’s defenses on siphoned student life-force."

"Every ward, every lighting rune, every warming charm in the grand halls," Thalen said, his aristocratically composed features hardening into pure, unadulterated fury. "The whole institution is a slaughterhouse disguised as a sanctuary. That's why the sick ward is always full of second-year apprentices suffering from 'mana exhaustion.' They aren't exhausted. They're being drained dry through the dormitory conduits."

A sudden, violent tremor rippled through Zeyric’s chest—not from fear, but from a profound, terrifying realization that struck straight through their soul-bond.

"Zeyric?" Thalen asked, turning sharply as he felt the abrupt spike in Zeyric’s pulse. "What is it? What did you just think?"

"The core..." Zeyric’s hand rose to the charred oak wand tucked into his belt. His knuckles were bone-white. "My first two years here. Every single practical exam. The professors called me a defect. They said my mana channels were too wild, too unstable, that I couldn't hold a simple compression ward for more than three seconds."

"Zeyric, that was just poor foundational training—"

"No, it wasn't!" Zeyric snapped, his voice cracking with a fierce, burning anger. He pointed a shaking finger at the nearest pulsing conduit running directly beneath their catwalk. "Look at the intake frequency on that copper sleeve! It’s tuned specifically to siphon unfiltered, high-volume mana signatures from the lower-class dorms! My magic wasn't defective, Thalen. This damn machine was bleeding me like a stuck pig every time I tried to channel a spark!"

Thalen stared at the conduit, his analytical gaze tracing the brass dampening collars clamped around the feed-pipes. "The intake valves... they're set to harvest common-born students with high natural capacities before they learn proper warding techniques. If you don't have an aristocratic family blood-seal to insulate your room, the core taps your aura while you sleep."

"I spent three years thinking I was worthless," Zeyric whispered, a bitter laugh tearing from his throat as hot tears pricked the corners of his eyes. "Three years being kicked into the dirt by every high-born tutor in this school, and all along, they were using my own stolen mana to light their damn chandeliers."

Thalen didn't offer empty platitudes. Instead, he stepped forward until his shoulder was pressed firmly against Zeyric’s, closing the physical gap between them to let the stabilizing resonance of their bond flood through Zeyric’s racing nervous system.

"You're not worthless," Thalen said, each word deliberate and hard as iron. "You have more raw power than any three noble scells combined. And we are going to tear this entire mechanism apart piece by piece."

"Not while we're standing on a suspended catwalk with nowhere to run, you won't," a cold, mechanical voice echoed from the gloom ahead.

Both boys snapped their heads toward the far end of the narrow metal walkway.

Emerging from the steam clouds were three towering figures. They weren't human. Standing over seven feet tall, their bodies were constructed of interlocking plates of polished brass and blackened iron, their limbs jointed with heavy hydraulic pistons. Where a face should have been, a single, faceted violet gemstone glowed with malignant life behind an iron cage visor.

"Clockwork sentinels," Thalen warned, dropping his weight into a low dueling stance. "Malakor’s personal guard. They don't register pain, they don't negotiate, and those gems in their chests are high-capacity soul-batteries."

"Constructs powered by stolen lives," Zeyric spat, drawing his charred oak wand and feeling the immediate, electric hum of Thalen’s precision magic intertwining with his own vast mana well. "I owe them three years of payback."

"Keep your distance," Thalen commanded, parrying a burst of escaping steam with a flick of his rapier. "The catwalk is only three feet wide. If they flank us, we fall."

The lead construct took a heavy, clanking step forward, the iron grating groaning beneath its immense weight. A pneumatic hiss erupted from its right forearm as a three-foot serrated blade snapped out from its wrist with a brutal, metallic clang.

"Intruders identified," the construct droned, its voice vibrating with an unnatural, layered harmonic of dozens of trapped voices. "Clearance level: unauthorized. Directive: terminate and harvest."

"Try it, bucket of bolts!" Zeyric yelled.

The lead automaton lunged forward with terrifying, unnatural speed, its heavy brass boots denting the metal walkway as it closed the twenty-foot gap in a fraction of a second. The serrated blade came down in a vicious, diagonal cleave aimed straight at Zeyric’s neck.

"Shield left!" Thalen shouted, his instincts bleeding directly into Zeyric’s motor reflexes through the soul-tether.

Zeyric didn't even have to think. He threw his left arm up, channeling a dense, compressed burst of pure kinetic force. Because his aura was linked to Thalen’s tactical mind, the barrier didn't just manifest as an unwieldy shockwave—it formed a razor-thin, crystalline pane of angled mana that met the construct's blade at a perfect forty-five-degree deflection.

CLANG!

The serrated blade struck the mana shield, sparks showering across the catwalk as the force was diverted harmlessly into the stone wall of the shaft.

"Now! Thrust low!" Zeyric bellowed.

Thalen was already moving. Guided by the sudden surge of raw, explosive mana Zeyric was pumping through their joined circuit, Thalen dropped to one knee and drove his rapier straight into the automaton’s exposed knee joint. The reinforced steel blade pierced the hydraulic cylinder, unleashing a spray of scalding black oil.

The construct let out a distorted screech of grinding gears, its leg buckling beneath it.

"First one's crippled!" Zeyric yelled. "Watch the second!"

The other two constructs didn't hesitate. They advanced shoulder-to-shoulder, their heavy chassis blocking the entire width of the catwalk. The automaton on the right raised its left arm, the brass plates of its palm sliding back to reveal a glowing, runic aperture primed with a lethal bolt of compressed gravity magic.

"Get down!" Thalen tackled Zeyric around the waist, dragging them both flat against the vibrating iron grating just as a beam of violet gravitational force tore through the space where their chests had been a millisecond prior.

The blast struck the overhead steam pipe, severing the heavy metal tube entirely. A deafening roar filled the cavern as superheated, blinding white steam blasted downward, completely enveloping the walkway in an impenetrable wall of scalding mist.

"I can't see!" Zeyric coughed, shielding his face with his sleeve as the heat threatened to blister his skin. "Thalen! Where are they?"

"Close your eyes!" Thalen’s voice rang inside Zeyric’s skull, sharp and clear despite the roaring steam. "Stop using your eyes! Use the bond! Track the mana signatures!"

Zeyric clamped his eyelids shut. Instantly, the blinding white steam vanished from his perception, replaced by the dark, luminous landscape of the soul-tether. Through Thalen’s refined sensory perception, Zeyric could 'see' the cavern with absolute clarity: two massive, burning clusters of corrupted violet energy charging forward through the mist, their heavy footsteps sending distinct shockwaves through the iron grating.

Ten feet, Thalen’s thought projected. Eight feet.

I've got the left one, Zeyric thought back, his heart pounding in exact, identical synchronization with Thalen’s. Overload the core on my mark.

Mark!

Zeyric thrust both hands forward through the roaring steam, unleashing a torrential wave of raw, uncompressed kinetic power straight from the depths of his long-suppressed reservoir. It hit the left construct like an invisible battering ram, ripping the brass plating from its chest and exposing the glowing soul-gem within.

At the exact same instant, Thalen vaulted off Zeyric’s back, soaring through the mist with lethal grace. His rapier flared with a blinding white current of precision-guided mana. Mid-air, Thalen reversed his grip and drove the point of his blade directly into the exposed gemstone.

CRACK!

The violet crystal shattered into a thousand glittering shards. The construct froze instantly, its internal hydraulics seizing as the trapped life-force erupted into the air in a radiant, purifying burst of pale white light that swept the steam away.

Thalen landed lightly on the grating beyond it, but before he could recover his balance, the third construct—silent and merciless—swung its massive, iron-plated arm in a wide, sweeping backhand.

"Thalen! Look out!" Zeyric screamed.

The heavy iron fist slammed brutally into Thalen’s ribs with the sound of a sledgehammer hitting stone.

The impact tore through the soul-bond with agonizing intensity. A blinding flare of white-hot pain ripped across Zeyric’s own ribcage, knocking the air from his lungs and forcing him to his knees as if he had taken the blow himself.

Crack.

The catwalk railing gave way under the sheer momentum of the strike.

Thalen was thrown over the edge into empty air.

"NO!" Zeyric roared, lunging blindly forward across the slick, oil-stained grating.

Thalen’s rapier clattered into the abyss below, disappearing into the colossal churning gears of the central engine hundreds of feet down. In a desperate, frantic scramble, Thalen’s left hand shot out and caught the jagged edge of the broken catwalk platform.

His fingers slipped on the greasy iron.

"Zeyric!" Thalen gasped, his legs dangling out over the spinning, razor-sharp brass turbines below, his knuckles turning white as his grip began to fail.

The surviving automaton turned slowly toward the edge, its single violet eye flaring with lethal intent as it raised its heavy iron boot to stomp down on Thalen’s fingers.

"Get away from him!" Zeyric hurled himself forward, his wand leveled straight at the construct's face, but the distance was too great—and Thalen’s fingers slipped another agonizing inch over the void.

Chapter 45: Panic Room"The hinge is finally shifting, but so is the entire foundation," Zeyric hissed, his boots sliding another inch across the grit-covered floor as the heavy iron grate shrieked against centuries of accumulated grime. "If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight

Chapter 44: Cages of the Past"If that iron gives way another inch, we’re going to drop straight into the foundation’s main sewer line," Zeyric whispered, his boots slipping against the damp, dust-caked flagstones as he threw his upper body weight behind the rusted poker. "And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai

Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck.""My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering.""It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstone

Chapter 42: The Thesis Assignment"Stop moving before you tear your stitches," Thalen said, though his own right hand instinctively rose to press against his bandaged ribs as a sympathetic twinge flared through the bond."I'm not moving, I'm adjusting," Zeyric shot back, his dark eyes flashing with stubborn defiance as he propped himself higher on his elbow. "And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. He let his hand slide upward, intertwining his fingers

Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. He propped himself up on one elbow, ignoring his own

Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
