Chapter 22: Clearing the Smoke

"Get up!" Thalen ordered, his voice echoing with a strange, dual resonance that sounded as though two separate people were speaking the exact same words in precise, terrifying unison.

Zeyric scrambled to his feet, his limbs feeling both entirely weightless and leaden all at once, the residual backwash of their forced aura-fusion humming through his veins like liquid fire. "I'm up, I'm up. But if you ever suggest we merge our souls again to bypass a doorway, I am legally authorizing our bond to spontaneously combust."

"Noted," Thalen shot back, his eyes darting across the vast, shadowy expanse of Vice-Headmaster Malakor’s private sanctum. "Now focus. The door trap just clicked."

Before Zeyric could reply, a low, metallic hiss cut through the heavy, copper-scented air. From the ornate ventilation grilles high along the vaulted ceiling, thick billows of dense, violet-tinted smoke began to pour downward, curling sluggishly around the mahogany bookcases and spilling across the Persian carpets like crawling serpents.

"Soporific gas," Zeyric coughed, his hand flying to his mouth as the sweet, cloying stench of crushed nightshade and burnt sugar hit the back of his throat. "Malakor's security runes. They’re flooding the room."

"Hold your breath," Thalen commanded, already sweeping his right hand through the air in a sharp, circular motion. A pale blue aegis shimmered to life around them, expanding outward to push the creeping violet haze back toward the walls. But the gas was dense, heavy with low-tier enchantment, and the edges of Thalen’s compressed air-shield immediately began to buckle and hiss under the chemical pressure. "My shield won't hold this long. The air is too thick; it’s choking the oxygen out of the mana circuit."

"Then don't hold it!" Zeyric yelled over the rising roar of the ventilation system, his vision already blurring at the edges as the fumes found microscopic cracks in their barrier. "Blow a hole through the floor! We need ventilation, not a glass house!"

"The foundation is reinforced with anti-trespassing wards," Thalen argued, sweat beading on his forehead as he strained to keep the shrinking air-shield from collapsing entirely onto their shoulders. "If I strike the flagstones raw, the feedback could shatter every bone in our arms."

"Do you want broken arms, or do you want to wake up in Malakor’s dungeon with your soul permanently harvested into a crystal vial?" Zeyric snapped, stepping directly into Thalen’s personal space, pressing his chest flat against Thalen’s to maximize the aural bridge. "Combine it! Use my reserve pool, your precision, right now!"

Thalen didn't hesitate. The fleeting trace of aristocratic hesitation vanished from his eyes, replaced by a cold, sharp resolve that mirrored Zeyric’s own desperate urgency. "On three," Thalen muttered, his hand dropping to hover just above the worn obsidian floorboards. "One..."

"Two..." Zeyric joined in, his fingers tangling into the fabric of Thalen’s tunic, channeling the raw, untamed ocean of mana sitting dormant behind his ribs straight down into Thalen’s focused, needle-sharp conduit.

"Three!"

They struck the floor simultaneously.

There was no sound of shattering wood, only a deafening, bass-heavy thud that vibrated straight up through the marrow of their legs. A blinding flash of white-gold light erupted from beneath their boots, instantly vaporizing the heavy Persian rug and splintering the thick oak floorboards into a thousand jagged splinters. The compressed air-shield detonated outward, blowing the thick violet smoke away in a violent shockwave.

Through the newly blasted hole in the floorboards billowed a rush of damp, freezing air, smelling of wet earth, lime, and stagnant drainage water.

"Down!" Thalen shouted, grabbing Zeyric by the collar just as the heavy oak door of the sanctum shuddered under a massive, concussive blow from the outside.

"I'm going, I'm going!" Zeyric wheezed, not needing any further encouragement as he threw himself headfirst into the smoking, jagged gap in the floor, plunging blindly into the dark void below.

Thalen dropped right behind him, his boots catching on a rusted iron bracket just a split second before the heavy sanctum door burst open inward with a deafening crash.

"Intruders!" a harsh, metallic voice roared from above—one of Malakor’s elite enforcers, stepping into the ruined study with a drawn staff crackling with green lightning. "Search the room! Check the lower drainage!"

Hanging by their fingertips in the damp, freezing dark just beneath the sub-floor joists, Thalen and Zeyric held their breath, pressing their bodies flat against the rough stone walls of an unmapped utility shaft. The physical proximity was suffocating; Thalen could feel the frantic, rabbit-like thump of Zeyric’s heart vibrating against his own ribs through the invisible conduit of their bond, every spike of adrenaline doubling in intensity until it felt like their chests would burst.

"They went down," a second voice called out from the study above, accompanied by the heavy, rhythmic clanking of armored boots pacing across the remaining floorboards dangerously close to their hiding spot. "Break out the tracking hounds. Nobody escapes the third tier."

Zeyric bit down hard on his lower lip to keep a nervous gasp from escaping, his fingers cramping as he gripped a slick iron pipe running parallel to the shaft. Through the mental link, a sudden wave of sharp, stinging claustrophobia bled over from Zeyric’s mind, threatening to lock up Thalen’s own breathing.

Stop it, Thalen projected sharply into the shared space of their consciousness, his mental voice cutting through the rising panic like a razor. Breathe with me. In. Out. We are not trapped yet.

Zeyric swallowed hard, closing his eyes in the pitch-black void and forcing his lungs to match the slow, deliberate rhythm of Thalen’s chest. The suffocating weight receded just a fraction, replaced by the cold, biting draft of the tunnel beneath them.

Slowly, agonizingly, the heavy footsteps above began to retreat toward the main hallway, the sound of shouted orders fading into the distant echoes of the upper academy.

"They're moving toward the west wing," Zeyric whispered, his voice barely a breath against Thalen’s ear in the damp gloom. "That gives us maybe two minutes before they realize where this utility shaft actually empties out."

"And where does it empty out?" Thalen asked, his eyes adjusting slightly to the dim, bioluminescent moss clinging to the rusted pipes around them.

"Directly into the central power core," Zeyric replied grimly, shifting his weight as the iron bracket beneath them gave a soft, ominous groan. "The main boiler chamber. The one humming with enough volatile heat to level half the lower district if someone so much as drops a spark."

Thalen let out a short, humorless breath that was half-chuckle, half-groan. "Of course it does. Because a simple, quiet exit would violate every rule of our cursed existence."

"Glad you're finding humor in this," Zeyric muttered, carefully letting go of the pipe to drop four feet down onto a narrow, vibrating metal catwalk that stretched out into the massive, echoing cavern below. "Come on. If we hit the core before the patrols sweep the catwalks, we might actually live long enough to regret every single life choice that brought us to this university."

Thalen dropped down beside him, catching his balance smoothly as the entire walkway hummed violently beneath their boots, resonating with the deafening, subterranean roar of the academy's giant brass engine.

"For the record," Thalen said over the rising din of the massive boiler, stepping forward into the shadows with his hand instinctively brushing against Zeyric’s shoulder to keep the stabilizing static of the bond in check, "I don't regret a single one."

Zeyric glanced sideways at him, a tired, sharp-edged smirk cutting through the grime smeared across his cheek. "Save the romantic declarations for after we don't get turned into roasted duck by a rogue steam-valve, your lordship. Move."

They broke into a swift, silent jog along the suspended metal scaffolding, ducking beneath towering bundles of glowing mana-conduits that hissed with trapped blue energy. Below them, the great brass boiler loomed like a sleeping titan of iron and fire, its massive gears grinding together in a rhythmic, deafening pulse that shook the very air from their lungs.

Every step forward carried them deeper into the roaring heart of the academy, where the lines between magic, machinery, and survival blurred entirely away. And as the metal walkway narrowed sharply over a sheer, twenty-foot drop into the spinning turbine blades below, the sharp, metallic tang of ozone suddenly spiked in the air ahead of them.

Zeyric threw out an arm, halting Thalen in his tracks just as a heavy, mechanical shadow detached itself from the gloom at the far end of the catwalk.

"Stop right there," a cold, grating voice echoed from the darkness, accompanied by the unmistakable, terrifying mechanical whir of brass-plated joints shifting into a combat stance.

Two massive automaton guards, their core chambers pulsing with an angry, unstable violet light, stepped forward to block their only path forward, heavy multi-barreled casting rifles locking into position with synchronized clicks.

Thalen’s hand dropped to his wand, his fingers instinctively brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles as their shared mana reserves flared to life in unison. "Looks like we have company."

Zeyric cracked his neck, the white light of their combined aura beginning to leak outward from their skin in a brilliant, blinding halo. "Then let's not keep them waiting."

Chapter 45: Panic Room"The hinge is finally shifting, but so is the entire foundation," Zeyric hissed, his boots sliding another inch across the grit-covered floor as the heavy iron grate shrieked against centuries of accumulated grime. "If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight

Chapter 44: Cages of the Past"If that iron gives way another inch, we’re going to drop straight into the foundation’s main sewer line," Zeyric whispered, his boots slipping against the damp, dust-caked flagstones as he threw his upper body weight behind the rusted poker. "And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai

Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck.""My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering.""It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstone

Chapter 42: The Thesis Assignment"Stop moving before you tear your stitches," Thalen said, though his own right hand instinctively rose to press against his bandaged ribs as a sympathetic twinge flared through the bond."I'm not moving, I'm adjusting," Zeyric shot back, his dark eyes flashing with stubborn defiance as he propped himself higher on his elbow. "And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. He let his hand slide upward, intertwining his fingers

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 41: A New Normal

Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. He propped himself up on one elbow, ignoring his own

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 40: Permanent Ink

Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
