FAZER LOGINChapter 34: The Vice-Headmaster’s Wrath
"Drop your weapons, boys, or I’ll crush your lungs into fine dust before you even hit the marble," Malakor’s voice cut across the courtyard like a jagged razor, cold and entirely devoid of human warmth.
A suffocating weight slammed down from the sky, pressing down on Zeyric’s shoulders with the crushing force of an avalanche. His knees buckled instantly, his boots screeching against the polished stone as gravity itself turned into a physical, malicious enemy.
"I can't—Thalen, the pressure—it's fracturing my ribs," Zeyric gasped, tasting the sharp, metallic tang of blood as his chest compressed inward.
"Don't fight it alone, you idiot! Channel it through the bond!" Thalen yelled over the roaring hum of the violet dome, his face pale and slick with cold sweat as he dropped to one knee beside Zeyric.
"Split the load! Now!" Thalen roared, grabbing Zeyric’s wrist with a grip that threatened to snap bone.
Through the searing white-hot pipeline of their soul-resonance, the overwhelming gravity magic slammed into both of their bodies simultaneously, dividing a lethal crushing force in half. The shared agony hit their nervous systems like a bolt of lightning, but instead of collapsing, the sudden equilibrium forced them slowly, agonizingly back up to their feet.
"Look at them," a student whispered from the trembling crowd pressed against the courtyard wall. "They’re standing against Malakor’s pressure field. By the gods, they’re actually standing."
Malakor’s expression shifted from smug arrogance to cold, venomous fury as he saw them rising back up against his primary spell. "Insolent little parasites," Malakor hissed, his fingers curling into tight claws as his eyes flared a violent, unnatural violet. "You think a parlor trick and a stolen soul-tether can save you from a master of the high arts? Let’s see how well your bond holds when I snap your tether by erasing you piece by piece."
"He’s targeting you directly, Zeyric! He's focusing the vector surge on your side of the link!" Thalen shouted, his eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated panic as the air around Zeyric’s chest began to warp and distort.
"Then I take the vector vector split—I pull it toward me!" Zeyric cried out, gritting his teeth so hard a molar cracked under the strain.
"No, you absolute fool, you'll burn out your nervous system!" Thalen yelled, but before Zeyric could blink, Thalen lunged forward with blinding, reckless speed.
With a desperate, fluid motion, Thalen threw his entire body directly in front of Zeyric, taking the full, concentrated brunt of Malakor’s invisible gravity spear straight into his own chest.
A sickening crack echoed across the silent courtyard as Thalen’s ribs shattered, the impact driving the air from his lungs in a violent, crimson-stained gasp.
"Thalen!" Zeyric roared, a sound of pure, unbridled primal agony tearing itself raw from his throat.
Through the bond, the sensory pipeline flooded Zeyric’s mind with the blinding, horrific sensation of a breaking sternum and a stopping heart, threatening to drag him down into unconsciousness right along with Thalen's failing body.
"I've got you... I've got you," Zeyric choked out, his vision flashing black at the edges as Thalen slumped heavily against him, sliding down toward the blood-spattered stone.
"End of the line, street-rat," Malakor sneered, raising his rune-etched staff to deliver the final, lethal blow that would sever the soul-tether permanently.
"Not today, you bastard," Zeyric whispered, a terrifying, incandescent rage replacing the terror in his chest.
Instead of fighting the gravity magic, Zeyric opened his aura entirely, reaching deep down into the academy’s humming central power core that lay hidden beneath their boots. He stopped trying to control his meager, stuttering mana output and simply acted as an open conduit, letting the raw, unfiltered fury of the core flood directly into his open veins.
His charred oak wand flared into existence in his right hand, instantly transforming into a blinding pillar of pure, incandescent white light that outshone the harsh morning sun.
"What is that energy? It's impossible—no student has a mana pool that large!" Professor Starwyn gasped from the sidelines, her hands flying to her mouth as the paving stones beneath Zeyric’s boots began to crack and melt from the sheer thermal output.
"Zeyric, stop! It’s going to incinerate your core from the inside out!" Thalen coughed weakly, blood bubbling on his lips as he weakly clutched Zeyric’s sleeve.
"If I stop, we both die on these stones!" Zeyric shouted back, his voice echoing with a resonance that shook the high stained-glass windows of the grand library fifty yards away.
Malakor’s cold smile vanished completely, replaced for the first time by a flicker of genuine, primal terror as he stared at the blinding white vortex swirling around Zeyric’s outstretched hand. "Kill them! All of you, cut them down before he unleashes that—"
Before Malakor’s enforcers could take a single step forward, Zeyric swept his wand outward in a devastating, fluid arc.
An immense shockwave of pure, white-hot mana exploded outward from the center of the courtyard, shattering the shimmering violet containment dome into a billion glittering shards of harmless light. The concussive blast swept across the marble steps with the force of a hurricane, slamming Malakor’s elite enforcers backward into the stone pillars and lifting the Vice-Headmaster entirely off his feet.
"No! My spell—my core!" Malakor shrieked, his voice turning to a desperate wail as the shockwave slammed him violently into the reinforced stone wall behind the portico.
With a deafening crash, Malakor’s rune-etched staff snapped cleanly in half, the glowing violet crystals embedded in its shaft shattering into gray, worthless dust.
Across the academy grounds, the stolen life-force that had been siphoned into the central engine suddenly rushed backward down into the foundations, restoring the vibrant color to Veyron’s catatonic face and bringing an instant, collective gasp of relief from the hundreds of students huddled against the walls.
Zeyric stood amidst the settling dust, his wand smoking and his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps, before his legs finally gave out beneath him.
He pitched forward onto the cobblestones beside Thalen, his vision tunneling into absolute darkness as the crushing exhaustion of the unleashed power pulled him under.
"Zeyric... Zeyric, look at me," Thalen whispered, his voice trembling as he forced his broken body to roll over, frantically searching for Zeyric’s face in the ash and dust.
"Get the healers—now!" Professor Starwyn’s voice rang out sharply across the ruined courtyard as she sprinted toward them, her robes flying behind her like dark wings.
Thalen didn't answer her; he simply pressed his trembling hand against Zeyric’s cheek, feeling the weak, synchronized flutter of their shared pulse slowing down in the cold morning air.
"Stay with me, you idiot," Thalen choked out, his own eyes slipping shut as the heavy silence of the ruined courtyard closed in around them.
"What do we do with Malakor, Professor?" one of the surviving city guards stammered, pointing a shaking finger at the broken, unconscious Vice-Headmaster pinned against the stone wall.
"Put him in heavy iron stasis-cuffs and throw him in the deepest dungeon beneath the city," Starwyn ordered without looking back, her hands already glowing with golden emergency stabilization magic as she knelt over the two unconscious boys. "And someone bring a stretcher—our top graduates just saved the entire academy, and they aren't dying on my watch."
Chapter 45: Panic Room"The hinge is finally shifting, but so is the entire foundation," Zeyric hissed, his boots sliding another inch across the grit-covered floor as the heavy iron grate shrieked against centuries of accumulated grime. "If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight
Chapter 44: Cages of the Past"If that iron gives way another inch, we’re going to drop straight into the foundation’s main sewer line," Zeyric whispered, his boots slipping against the damp, dust-caked flagstones as he threw his upper body weight behind the rusted poker. "And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai
Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck.""My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering.""It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstone
Chapter 42: The Thesis Assignment"Stop moving before you tear your stitches," Thalen said, though his own right hand instinctively rose to press against his bandaged ribs as a sympathetic twinge flared through the bond."I'm not moving, I'm adjusting," Zeyric shot back, his dark eyes flashing with stubborn defiance as he propped himself higher on his elbow. "And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. He let his hand slide upward, intertwining his fingers
Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. He propped himself up on one elbow, ignoring his own
Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
