Chapter 4

Author: Kitty Bloom
Two days later, I was discharged from the hospital. Aaron and Olivia came to pick me up.

When I opened the front passenger door, Aaron was fastening Olivia's seat belt for her. That was where I always sat because I got carsick.

Olivia greeted me with a bright smile. "Feeling any better, Mia?"

I nodded. "Much better."

Aaron looked up at me. "Mia, Olivia gets carsick."

I said nothing. I closed the door and climbed into the back seat.

By the time the car pulled up outside my house, I was fighting the urge to throw up. I got out, and Olivia followed me inside.

She gave me a hesitant look. "Mia, I need to tell you something."

"Go ahead."

"I'm pregnant."

She took an ultrasound report from her bag.

"Who's the father?"

"Aaron."

I had expected that answer, but my heart still skipped a beat.

"When?"

"Back when you and Aaron were living apart."

Olivia looked down, avoiding my eyes. "We slept together plenty of times, but we only forgot to use protection once, when we'd had too much to drink."

"What are you going to do?"

Tears streamed down Olivia's face. "I told Aaron. He said I should get an abortion, but I don't want to. Mia, please help me."

She clutched my hand, sobbing quietly.

The request was so absurd I almost laughed. "You're pregnant with my boyfriend's baby, and you're asking me for help?"

"Please, Mia. I just need you to leave Aaron for a while."

Olivia dropped to her knees in front of me, stroking her stomach as she broke down in sobs. When I showed no reaction, she began slapping herself.

"Mia, don't forget that I saved you from drowning when you were 19. You owe me your life."

The photo on the table, the one of all three of us, had begun to fade.

"Alright. I'll help you."

After Olivia left, I booked the next flight north.

The next day, I grabbed my luggage and took a cab to the airport.

About 1,000 feet from the terminal, I got out and ran through the blazing heat, worried the traffic would make me miss my flight. My blood sugar crashed, and everything went black.

When I came to, I was in the hospital. My phone showed dozens of missed calls from Aaron.

He burst into my room, frantic. "Mia, Olivia is hemorrhaging. She needs a blood transfusion, and you're the only compatible donor."

He was terrified, but not for me.

"I don't feel well, Aaron," I said weakly.

"Mia, are you really going to let her die? Once this is all over, we'll get married."

He sounded completely sincere, but when I closed my eyes and listened, I heard nothing. I thought I had gone numb, but a dull ache still throbbed in my chest.

Three hours after giving Olivia the blood she needed, I slipped into a coma and remained unconscious for a long time. When I finally woke, Mom and Dad were beside my bed.

"Mia, you're awake."

Mom burst into tears as Dad called for a nurse.

"Mom. Dad," I rasped.

"Mia, thank God you're okay."

Mom clutched my hand, and I noticed several new lines on her face.

Dad sighed heavily. "Mia, you need to end things with Aaron for good. Olivia miscarried and suffered severe bleeding a week ago, and he forced you to donate blood to her."

Mom covered her face and began to cry. "You've been in a coma for a week, and he hasn't visited once. Olivia is only one floor down, but he still couldn't be bothered to come up and see you."

Mom and Dad looked as though they had aged years. All I could hear in their thoughts was how worried they were about me.

The memory of Aaron choosing Olivia over me a week earlier was still painfully clear.

I held Mom's hands. "Mom, Dad, I want to transfer to another hospital. I don't want to see him again."

The hospital processed my discharge quickly.

Just as we were about to leave for the new hospital, Aaron sent me a message. "Mia, I'll explain everything once Olivia recovers."

I muted him. This time, I didn't want to hear his explanation.

Aaron stared at Daniel's hand on my shoulder, then smiled. "It's Mia's decision. I'll wait for your answer, Mia."After Aaron left, Daniel turned to me, his expression serious."It's your bed-and-breakfast, so it's your call. But honestly, I don't want my fiancée's ex bothering her. I get jealous, Mia," he said, lowering his voice. He leaned in, his cheek brushing lightly against my earlobe. I could hear him begging me not to accept Aaron's offer."The contract looks pretty good," I said, deliberately stopping there.Daniel froze and watched me nervously."But it doesn't hold up once you take a closer look."He let out a long breath of relief.I had someone return the contract to Aaron.Later, Olivia sent me a few updates about Aaron. He hadn't dated anyone since we broke up. He had replaced every woman on his immediate staff with a man, donated his entire fortune to help children with rare diseases, and established the Mia Hope Foundation.I typed back, "You don't need to t

Aaron froze. "You're only saying that to make me give up, aren't you?"He reached for my hand, but I stepped back before he could touch me.I opened my social media profile and showed him a photo of Daniel and me cuddled up together. "Daniel and I love each other, so stop coming around. Aaron, I want us to keep our distance from now on."Aaron stared at the photo for a long time, struggling to contain his emotions. For a while, neither of us said anything. Finally, he replied flatly, "We'll see."The setting sun cast a long shadow behind him as he walked away. After that, he never came to see me again.Every so often, a different number would text to ask how I was doing. I blocked every one.I threw myself into growing the bed-and-breakfast, with my new boyfriend, Daniel, quietly supporting me along the way.During our first year together, Daniel took me to meet his parents."If you know you're right for each other, get married. Don't keep Mia waiting forever."Daniel's mothe

Aaron held out a letter. "Olivia left this for you."I didn't take it."I'll read it to you."He opened the envelope and read the letter aloud, slowly and deliberately. "Dear Mia, I'm sorry. Growing up, everyone adored you. You always stood out, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous."While you and Aaron were living apart, I saw an opening and took it. Seeing how badly I'd hurt you filled me with guilt, but I couldn't control how I felt. Aaron is no saint either…"Aaron stopped there."Where's Olivia?" I asked."She was too ashamed to face you, so she left.""Aren't you leaving?""No, Mia. Olivia and I are completely done. You don't have to give me another chance. I'll keep trying until you do. Starting today, I'm going to win you back."Aaron spoke with absolute conviction. Then he pulled a ring from inside his coat. It was an exquisite, ornate pink-diamond ring, exactly the kind I had always loved. But it was too late.He turned the ring to show me the engraving ins

Aaron dropped into a crouch, defeated, and the sound of his stifled sobs filled the hallway. He kept thinking about how hurt I had looked. That was when he realized that this time, I was really gone.A week after moving into our new home, I poured all my savings into opening a bed-and-breakfast by the ocean. Tourist season was in full swing, and with influencers featuring the place, it quickly became a hit."Hello, sir. Here's what you two ordered," I began."Mia, it's me."Aaron removed his hat, and I fell silent.Beside him, Olivia looked at me with nervous, uncertain eyes. "Mia, we came to see you.""It took me 21 days, but I finally found you. You cut me off completely and left me no way to reach you."Aaron's voice was hoarse, and he looked worn down. I knew that look. I had worn it myself once."If you're here to reminisce, you're not welcome," I said flatly.Aaron stepped forward and grabbed my hand. "Mia, I regret everything. Will you give me another chance?"His voic

Once Olivia was stable, Aaron spent three hours making soup exactly the way I liked it. He carried it upstairs, only to stop cold when he found my room empty. Panic surged through him."Doctor, where's the patient who was in Room 508?" he asked urgently."She was discharged yesterday."Aaron's right eyelid gave a sudden twitch. He turned to the nurse, his eyes red. "Which hospital was she transferred to?""I'm sorry, sir, but we can't disclose that information."He pulled up my social media profile and realized I had blocked him from seeing my posts. He forced himself to stay calm and sent me a message. "I was wrong to force you to donate blood."When I didn't respond, he sent another. "Let me know when you're being discharged. I'll come pick you up."My flight landed without incident, and I made it safely to the new hospital. After spending a week recuperating, Mom and Dad handed me a box, clearly keeping a surprise from me."What is it?
