Chapter 7

ผู้เขียน: Mimi Winterrest
When I returned to the dorm, Alvin was tidying up his desk. He'd placed the carton of milk on my desk with a sticky note underneath it.

"I really can't finish them all. If you don't want to take it for free, then you can help me with a math problem next time."

I stared at the words for a very long time. Finally, I picked up the milk carton, opened it, and took small sips.

This was the first time I tried to believe that a carton of milk wouldn't leave me with an insurmountable debt.

There was also a letter from Mom at the very bottom of the box.She said that she'd thought a lot during this time, and for the first time ever, she seriously calculated how much the food in the school cafeteria would cost per week. She also said that she went to the cafeteria and bought a plain waffle and drank from the free tap water as I always did, and she immediately gave up after the second meal. She apologized to me.She stopped mentioning that her prior strictness had been for my own good in this letter. She also didn't ask me to come home. Her last paragraph in the letter simply said, "I'm not asking you to forgive us, but we will slowly make it up to you for all the living expenses we never gave you back then. That's not a favor. It's a responsibility that we should have shouldered a long time ago."I put the letter back inside the box.Mr. Meyer asked, "Do you want to see her?"I looked outside the office and saw Mom standing under the tree outside the building. It ha

I moved into my high school dorm after the Maynard Summer School Program ended.Dad also transferred the first month's allowance of 400 dollars to the escrow account according to the mediation agreement from earlier. He wrote in the transfer remarks, "Living expenses. Be thankful."I stared at the four words for a very long time and ultimately never replied.I reduced the number of notes and materials I did for the other students and kept only two essay revision gigs on weekends. I then used the rest of my freed-up time to prepare for the upcoming SATs.I placed 9th in the whole grade during the first monthly test of the new school semester, rising from 27th place. Mr. Meyer then sent my report card to the parents' group. That night, Mom called me dozens of times, but I never picked up. So, she sent me a text message instead."I knew that you were promising. We were strict with you before because you were stronger and more resilient than Daryl. Now, it looks like our strictness f

After Mom and Dad left, we entered into the busiest phase of our projects.During the first mid-term presentation, I ranked second-to-last in the group. The reviewing lecturer told me that my topic was too broad and that there were significant biases in my data collection. My palms were sweaty when the projector was turned off. As I walked out of the classroom, I heard the other students whispering and gossiping behind me."Didn't he rank first during the selection? And yet, this was all he could do?""Maybe he's just better on paper."I froze in my steps.Dad's words rang in my ears again just then. There were plenty of outstanding people in the world. And soon, I'd find out just how little I was worth without Mom and Dad.I didn't return to my dorm room that night. I just hugged my laptop and sat in the stairwell for a long time. When Alvin found me, I was already prepared to delete the entire research folder from my laptop. He grabbed my hand at once to stop me."Are you o

After returning to the lab, I didn't try to tough it out. Instead, I sent a message to the group chat."I think something's wrong with my model. Can someone please help me take a look at it?"Less than a minute later, Alvin replied. "I'll be there in ten minutes."The other two people in my group also responded. "We'll be right there."We worked hard until 3:00 am and finally realized that it was a data format error. When the graph curve reappeared on the screen, Alvin slumped onto the desk and cheered.I looked at their tired but happy faces and realized for the first time that asking for help wasn't a sign of weakness. The next day at noon, I treated the three of them to lunch.Alvin bit into his grilled chicken wings and asked, "Does this count as payback for the milk the other day?"I thought about it seriously for a while."No."He grinned. "You've finally thought it through, hmm?"I nodded. "That milk's another thing. I just wanted to treat you guys to lunch today."

Finally, I picked up the milk carton, opened it, and took small sips. This was the first time I tried to believe that a carton of milk wouldn't leave me with an insurmountable debt. The Maynard Summer School Program wasn't just any summer camp.On the first day, Dr. Woods placed a thick stack of materials in front of us. He told us that we had to complete a small research project within two months, culminating in a public defense.I chose to work on a topic about the campus water conservation system. The first draft went smoothly. However, when we began collecting data, my problems kept coming, one after another.Sensor readings drifted, pipeline diagrams didn't match the actual

The bus drove on for three hours and finally stopped before the gates to Maynard College. The lecturer in charge of the project introduced himself as Dr. Colin Woods and helped us check into our dorms for the next two months. The dorms were for sharing between two people. We were given brand-new bedding for our mattresses, and we each got a campus card."The card contains two months' worth of your meal allowance of 30 dollars a day. You can use them at the campus cafeteria or the mini-mart here."I stared at the card for a long time and didn't take it."Must I finish up all 30 dollars of the allowance every day?" I asked.Dr. Woods was stunned for a moment. Then, he replied, "No, you don't. The team just distributed it to you according to the number of days you're participating in the camp. But if you can't finish using them all, you won't be refunded for the balance.""What about after the camp?" I asked."We'll be taking the cards back after the camp, and you won't be charged
