Chapter 5

Author: Nancy Hart
I rented a small apartment. It was nothing fancy, but just enough for one person.

I didn't sleep in the bed because the mattress was too soft and comfortable. I wasn't used to it, so I lay on the floor instead.

In the middle of the night, I woke up from a nightmare, drenched in sweat. Memories of the basement rushed back like a tidal wave.

I covered my face with my hands, tears slipping through my fingers as a heavy, suffocating pain pressed against my chest.

On the third day, Jacob showed up at my door and questioned me, "Grace, what's the meaning of this? You left the hospital without permission and didn't even come home!"

I looked at him. "Mr. Morris, please… I'm begging you. Just let me go."

He stared at me, puzzled, and asked, "Do you even know what you're saying? Are you out of your mind?"

He didn't care what I wanted. He just dragged me off without giving me a choice.

Back at the villa, Rachel looked at me and spoke in a tone full of reproach. "Ms. Barnes, you really sho

As soon as Jacob and I entered, we saw Rachel suspended in midair. Her body was covered in wounds—torn flesh, bloodied skin. It was clear she had been tortured badly. When she saw Jacob, she lit up, thinking he had come to set her free. She shouted, "Jacob! Please make them let me down! I'm in so much pain. I can't take it anymore!"But Jacob's voice was cold and merciless. "This is nothing. You're going to experience every bit of what Grace went through. You're never getting out of here."Rachel stared at him in shock, then suddenly burst out laughing. "Jacob, do you really think it was all me? It wasn't just me. It was you!"Those bodyguards only followed my orders because you allowed it. If you hadn't turned a blind eye, if you hadn't spoiled me the way you did, I never would've had the power to torture her."Jacob instinctively shook his head. "No, that's not true. I didn't! You accused Grace of pushing you down the stairs. That's why I locked her in the basement. It was your

If I had never fallen in love with Jacob, none of this would have happened.Maybe I wouldn't have known what love felt like, or I wouldn't have gotten married. But I would have remained the carefree daughter of the Barnes family, eventually inheriting the family business and living a quiet, comfortable life. It would not be perfect, but it would be peaceful.Jacob's legs gave out beneath him, and he dropped to his knees."Grace, please forgive me. I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. I'll help you forget everything."I laughed through my tears. "I can't forget. I have nightmares every night. Every time I think about what happened in that basement, I feel like I'm dying all over again."I used to love you so much that I wanted to give you the best of everything. But now, all I want is to stay far away from you. I never want to see you again."Suddenly, the door burst open, and Rachel walked in."Jacob, I heard Ms. Barnes was hospitalized. Is she okay?"Jacob stare

The bodyguards exchanged uneasy glances, too afraid to speak.Jacob's temper snapped, and he kicked one of them hard. "What? All of you lost your tongues?"Terrified, the bodyguards dropped to their knees, begging for mercy as one of them blurted out, "Mr. Morris, we're innocent. It was Ms. Allen. She gave us money and told us exactly how she wanted Ms. Barnes to be punished."Jacob's pupils contracted. He stumbled back a few steps. "Tell me exactly what you did to her!"The bodyguards fell silent again.Jacob narrowed his eyes and growled, "If you don't start talking, I'll cut out your tongues myself.""I'll talk!"One of the bodyguards broke and confessed everything—how they beat me daily, tortured me, and described exactly what cruel punishments they had used.Jacob stayed quiet through it all. He didn't say a word and just kept his head down. His expression was hidden, so no one could tell what he was thinking. As I listened, it felt like I was reliving everything all over

In the chaos, I thought I saw Jacob rushing toward me.He looked panicked as he scooped me into his arms, calling my name over and over. "Grace! Grace!"I had to be seeing things. Why would he care? If I died, he'd be free to be with Rachel without any guilt or burden.I drifted into a long dream. When I was young, my parents were always busy with work, so they left me at the Morris residence. Sometimes, I would get moody and refuse to eat, and it was always Jacob who patiently coaxed me, feeding me bite by bite. He even shared his favorite toys and told me jokes just to make me laugh.Gradually, I fell for him. I followed him everywhere, dreaming of the day I'd grow up and marry him—because being with him made me happy. But as we got older, Jacob grew colder. Eventually, I found out he had a girlfriend.I didn't want to interfere, so I quietly stepped back. When they broke up, I couldn't help but let that buried hope rise again. At that time, our families just so happened to b

Jacob's shout jolted me back to reality. I wasn't in the basement anymore.I panicked and stammered, "N-No... I didn't mean to. I'm just not used to using cutlery."In the basement, I had to fight the dogs for scraps if I wanted to eat.At first, I refused. I would have rather gone hungry than lowered myself to that level. But when they saw I was being defiant, they beat me with sticks and forced me to crawl over and compete with the dogs.My legs were broken, so I could only drag myself across the floor. The dogs bit me all over, but I still cried and shoved the filthy food into my mouth through the stench. If I lost the fight, I didn't just go hungry; I had to bark like a dog to entertain them.Rachel reached over and held Jacob's hand, pretending to be kind and understanding. She said, "Ms. Barnes probably just needs time to adjust. She just got out of the basement."Jacob looked at the food on the table with disgust and said coldly to the maid, "Clear the table."Even thoug
